The Return of the Lady
8 years ago by
I’m a little bit obsessed with Luca Guadagnino’s most recent film, A Bigger Splash, starring the wonderful Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts,Ralph Fiennes – who delivers a spectacular performance- and the refreshing Dakota Johnson.
More specifically, I’m obsessed with Swinton’s Raf Simons-designed wardrobe, which borrows from 1950s Italian fashion and Dior archive alike. Swinton plays a Bowie-esque rock star, currently recovering from a life of booze, drugs and rock and roll (and an operation to her vocal chords) and taking well-deserved vacation with her boyfriend (Schoenaerts) on equal-parts-rough-and-dreamy Pantelleria, a small Italian island off the coast of Sicily.
Swinton gives off a fittingly Dior vibe: from her casual blue and white stripped cover-up to her dashing white jumpsuit and mirrored sunglasses, there isn’t a single sartorial faux-pas. Most memorable is the typically Dior silhouette of Swinton’s white flared skirt and black, backless top paired with a straw hat as she strolls through the streets, Ralph Fiennes on her arm. Swoon.
Watching the film made me want to re-explore more feminine silhouettes: not a tomboy by nature per se, I do have a serious tendency towards denims and chelsea boots, more-so since I moved to New York. But there is something to be said about this summer’s fashion which is equal parts 1970s boho flower-patterned glory (thank you, Alessandro Michele!) and sporty-chic 1990s it-girl. It has made me want to retire my shorts and jeans for flirty skirts, slips and dresses, if only for a few months.
Do you ever find yourself inspired to switch-up your style because of films?

Oh dear, if you loved this film, you have to watch I Am Love by Luca. The wardrobe was also designed by Raf Simons from his days at Jil Sander. Also, the photography, the scenery and the story of the film will drive you absolutely crazy. Highly recommended.
I wholeheartedly agree!
I have been obsessed with this movie for a year ! I love all his films. Does anyone know who makes the handbag she uses in the film? Its so perfect.
Tilda wears it with the back shirt and white skirt when she goes to town. Please someone tell me who makes the bag ??????
Hello…
Have a nice day !
Have you ever seen th movie ‘Io sono l’amore’ by Luca Guadagnino with Tilda Swinton?
Wow!!!
I felt inspired by Catherine Deneuve in “The Hunger” (Tony Scott) and Kristin Scott Thomas in “The English Patient” (Anthony Minghella) .
I have a big crush on Tilda Swinton ever since I saw her in Orlando ! The costumes are exquisite and the movie excellent. My other movie inspiration is Kristin S.Thomas in the English Patient. The wardrobe choice was very elegant.
Have you ever seen Nine? The movie wasn’t great, but the costumes and beauty were 10/10. So beautiful that I was inspired to make the dreadful decision to cut short short bangs like Penelope Cruz’s character! Unfortunately we look nothing alike and it took months to grow out. I still love her looks in every film she is in, though :)
I was was very inspired by another movie starring Tilda Swinton. She looked great in “I am love.”
Oh yes,not so much movies maybe, but I still have a thing for the music videos of the 90s – all those white shirts, ripped jeans, leather jackets, bright tops, hoop earrings, big hair, casual cool t-shirts…. Yes, please! :)

Oh yes, loved the clothes in this and I Am Love. Tilda Swinton looks just amazing. And yes to the bag referred to would love to know. Oh everything, her mirrored sunglasses. Soo soo good. Thanks for the post love it :)
I was super inspired by the movie “la febbre”, a recent italian movie, not exeptional…but the female carachter biking around the countryside with floral dresses…please make more of this kind of articles!
