Sunday Scaries, ladies and gentlemen.
We all get them. Honestly, I’ve never met anybody who’s unfamiliar with the seeping dread, the impenetrable loneliness, the unpredictable potholes of nostalgia and angst.
For me, it’s apartment windows on Sunday evenings. Something about walking through the city, depleted from the weekend, and stumbling into the honeyed light of a living room window–the shelves of colorful books, the lip of a grand piano, the massive leaves of a house plant–just warms and breaks my heart all at once. I want to be in those living rooms, or maybe I just want to be in my own family’s, 3,000 miles west.
The key to the sunday scaries, I find, is the perfect playlist. The perfect playlist turns feelings of isolation and anxiety into something like a bluesy smile. The perfect playlist lets you wallow, but just enough. The perfect playlist brightens your spirits without forcing sunshine down your throat.
