Make it Last

11 years ago by

How do you make your makeup last all day?

I’m headed back to the Midwest this week, where I am going to be a bridesmaid in one of my best friend’s wedding (Side note: I love weddings and I also love the movie “My Best Friend’s Wedding”… so good, right?) Anyway, I’m freaking out a little bit after receiving our schedule for the big day because I’ve got to come up with a way to keep my makeup on my face for at least… oh I don’t know…16 hours?!?!

I’m worried that my current routine isn’t going to cut it, so I’m getting ready to step up my game. I’ve already got a bottle of Urban Decay’s All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray in my arsenal. Have you tried it?

Are there any long lasting products you swear by? Also, I know I’m going to need a good great waterproof mascara…

  • Lisa Eldridge has two great tutorials on heat proof make-up, one has just been uploaded! Summer in the city is stronger, Summer Rose Bridal is softer and wedding-y (obvs) They both have product lists beneath them :)

Second what Amy said. Lisa Eldridge’s last upload was on heat-proof makeup. That’s where I would start.

  • i heard that thermal water sprays help :)

I’ve been using Pixi Flawless & Poreless Primer as a base, and it seems to help my makeup last all day. You can also use it as kind of a blotting paper when you need a touch up, but I haven’t tried that yet.

  • I swear by fiber mascaras – fiberwig or blinc! With them, i can swim, workout, rub my eyes, cry rivers, shower. . . and.they.will.not.budge.

  • MAC Fix+ !! I swear by it in the summer heat. Keeps your makeup in place and also gives you that fresh dewy glow. Pack some Oil absorbing blotting linens too! Boscia has great ones.

  • Bobbi Brown long-wear gel eyeliner. I have deep-set eyes and have always had issues with eyeliner coming off on my lids but this stuff stays on ALL DAY and doesn’t budge or smear. I also use MAC paints for eyeshadow and those also have really good staying power.

  • with my eyelids, even bobby brown gel eye liner disapears after a few hours :-(

  • While I don’t have a solution for keeping foundation on (other then touch-ups). I do have one for the BEST waterproof mascara! Use a form of “tube” mascara. It wraps your lashes in little rubber-y tubes and they do NOT smear. I wouldn’t recommend it for everyday use, I feel like it doesn’t allow my lashes to breath and they aren’t the healthiest when you wear it day in-day out, but for special occasions? It’s the best! Sephora has lots of brand options: http://www.sephora.com/search/search.jsp?keyword=tube%20mascara&_requestid=42365

  • Bobbi Brown’s long-wear line works well.

I also set my makeup with La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water. I’ve seen a lot of makeup artists at the runway shows do this and it really works.

I would say… get a tan, some waterproof eyeliner and dito mascara (helloooo Chanel Inimitable!!!). Cute lipgloss and you’re ready to go! You’ll be gorgeous, and stress free. ;-)

  • The waterproof mascara is a must! Have fun!

Between the Urban Decay setting spray, blotting linens, and eye primer (anything from the $1 ELF to UDs primer potion to Wet n Wild works for my oily lids), I’ve made my makeup stay exactly in place for nearly 24 hours (accidentally, but haven’t we all?).

  • Love the picture! <3
I usually don't wear make-up at all or use a BB cream.

  • Lovely Alex,
Lisa Elbridge has a recent video about how to do make up for hot, warm and humid summer time. She uses lots of long lasting product including mascara and primer and … just google her and she is everywhere.
    Good luck and have fun

  • This is what I was going to say, too! Only I was going to recommend Lisa Eldridge’s Kate Winslet red carpet look. Basically it is all about building up thin layers and using the right formulations. Highly recommend as she talks you through the theory behind what she’s doing in order to make the makeup last.

  • I echo the Lisa Eldridge site videos. Her advice and expertise is the best! (Maybe one day you could do a feature/interview with her!)

  • Love Lancome defincels waterproof mascara. Use it all the the time.

  • sunscreen and EMBRYOLISSE (before starting the makeup).

  • the best for eyes is NARS pro prime (smudge proof eyeshadow base) , makes a big difference ! ( seen on on Lisa Eldrige blog (she is fantastic)

  • that NARS is amazing, AMAZING .one word

I used products by make up forever but I think that all make up brands have some waterproof products !!!

Lisa Eldridge just did a video on heat-resistant makeup and mentioned that Urban Decay’s waterproof mascara is good. Check out her video for a list of great waterproof products that can keep your face in the humidity!!

  • Don’t forget to get some translucent powder!! That stuff makes makeup last forever!

    https://newbornfanatic.wordpress.com/

  • Primer! Put it on after you put on your moisturizer. Let it dry (which only takes a few minutes). Then put make up on. Your makeup wont budge! I use the one from body shop – http://www.thebodyshop-usa.com/makeup/foundation-concealer/skin-primer-matte-it.aspx?vendor=CSE_GOOG&mr:trackingCode=7B6E5239-BB81-DE11-B7F3-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA&mr:adType=pla&gclid=CKuHgO6ItbgCFQ9eQgodLVYA6A

  • I went with a friend to do a test run for her wedding makeup and the last thing the applied was this product.
    http://www.sephora.com/hd-microfinish-powder-P210400

It looked great and basically set everything in place for the day. And it looked so good I bought one for myself. It’s meant to be a light dusting over your face – start with a little. Or just hit Sephora for a test and see if you like it.

  • urban decay’s de-slick as a primer AND setting spray before powder! lots and lots and lots of blotting paper helps :) also, kiss me heroine make waterproof eyeliner and mascara (not sure if you can get this where you’re at. it’s a japanese brand). i have incredibly oily skin/lids and live in a permanently hot & humid environment, and this is the only make up that does not smudge. EVER. it’s waterproof and a bit harder to remove.

  • Stainiac cheek/lip stain – use it as a blush and it seriously won’t come off all day!

  • Like a lot of girls here said – Lisa Eldridge’s tutorial, and I’ve heard this works well too:

    http://www.weddingbee.com/2011/12/29/helpful-series-ace-your-face-pt-1/#axzz2ZHh4T2SW

  • velvet touch eyeliner by GOSH is the toughest i’ve ever seen: goes on soft and smooth, then clings to your skin like there’s no tomorrow :)
easily removed with any eye makeup remover, but stays on 48 hours, regardless of swimming, eye rubbing, etc.
last but not least – it’s not pricey at all :)

  • i like this video with tips and advice for summer make-up from Lisa Eldridge))

  • My Best Freiend’s Wedding is my ALL TIME FAVOURITE!!
I’ve watched it 978589595 times and if I see it again on tv tonight I’ll definitely be watching it again!!
(I don’t have to say that I have in on dvd of course:)

  • Don’t wear foundation if you don’t need to, thas is a huge hassle less. Wear l’Oreal infallible eyeshadow and Urban Decay eyeliner, those don”t budge either. And above all, don’t forget to have fun.

  • I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: don’t use waterproof mascara, as it’ll smudge under your eyes. It reacts to greasy skin. I use one of the Clinique long wearing formula mascara’s, that only come off with warm water. Used it for my wedding and it worked like magic :)

    Have fun!

  • LISA ELDRIDGE !!! please please do an interview of her, she is the best make-up artist who does youtube videos !

Mascara : Inimitable waterproof by Chanel! The best mascara there is, I’ve used it every day since 2006 and I always get compliments for my eyelashes!

  • I just recently went to my brother-in-law’s wedding in Mexico (and yes, it was HOT!) and someone let me try their MAC Fix+ to set my makeup. I’d never really paid much attention to the product, but it was seriously magical. My makeup stayed put all evening, through all the wind and sweat and dancing and everything. I don’t think I’d use it daily, but for special occasions like where you’re headed I’d totally give it a go. As for mascara, my all time favorite is Maybelline Full N Soft, and they do a waterproof version which is just as good as their regular. The Make Up Forever aqua eyeliners are really long-lasting as well. Let us know what you end up using and how it all works!

  • For your eyes shadow primer, i loveee lovee loveeeeee M.A.C. paint pot. They make your eyes shadow last longer and stay in place. It’s amazing! And it will unify your eye lid color. My favorit color is Painterly, it a very neutral pinky-beige. They also have one for more yellowish skin tone.

    Have fun! :)

Absolutely a primer, I use one from Too faced.

  • Nars is a lot better than mac, I had both MAC dries out so fast

  • Dermatologica zero setting powder. It’s white, but it goes on great on all skin tones, even dark skin to set makeup all day long (it touts that it lasts 16 hours, not kidding). For longer lasting power, apply it with a puff. Also, Mehron’s ColorSet Setting Powder (I am told) works well on people prone to sweating, though I’ve not tried it on any clients as yet. L’Oreal Voluminous waterproof mascara, though I agree w/the earlier post about the mascara that creates tubes around each lash – good stuff. Apply a bit more blush and eye shadow than normal so as it wears off a bit, you still have enough on.

  • I used to use MAC’s liquidlast liner, it had superb staying power but it was just too dry.

Nowadays I use urban decay’s eye shadow primer, then becca cream eyeshadow, and while it’s still wet I sweep black eye shadow over it. Much gentler than liquid liners but the staying power is amazingly good!! Better than any gel liners I’ve tried. Isn’t that weird?

Take your makeup bag with you and reapply! 16 hours implies that you are going from day to night, and I don’t see anything wrong with taking 15 minutes to touch up your look for the evening. I’m fairly quick, so I’ve even washed my face and reapplied.

  • Make Up For Ever HD powder!

  • For a feline flick that lasts and lasts, even on oily skin (like mine!) this MAC liquid liner is an absolute winner!

    http://www.maccosmetics.co.uk/product/shaded/151/1250/Products/Eyes/Liner/Liquidlast-Liner/index.tmpl

It’s tricky to apply though, and be sure to pack some oil-based remover too….
But otherwise, just take the basics & touch up! x

  • Hi Alex

I can’t recommend the Kevyn Aucoin mascara more fervently! It is one of the ‘tube’ types, and will.never.move…..ever! You massage the tubes off your eyelashes with just warm water when you (eventually) get to bed, if not, they will will still be there in the morning with absolutely zero panda eyes, I promise!

Kanebo 38 degree mascara. It will only shift with water hotter than 38 degrees (when it comes off very easily) otherwise it will survive sweat, tears, swimming, everything; you could rub oil onto your eyes, still there. Also take blotting papers with you to reduce shine without building up layers of powder. Have a wonderful time

  • I find that blotting my skin after I’ve put on my moisturiser/spf/primer makes it easier to apply my make up and also stops it sliding off my face throughout the day as it adheres better. I love Kleenex blotting tissues.

Its the touted as the best for a reason: SMASHBOX PHOTOFINISH. I wore it a couple weeks ago for my best friends outdoor wedding (in Missouri, in July… yeah) and it was a lifesaver.

  • I completely agree – Lisa Eldridge rocks! And her heat proof make up video posted the other weeks is very good and helpful. Have fun at the festivities! LOVE your site!

  • I use products that are made to last all day, and I also layer.
    Face: Primer, Foundation, Concealer, Powder
    Cheeks: Cream blush, Powder blush
Lips: Lip stain, blot, Lip stain, Lip balm/lip gloss
Eyes: Gel eyeliner, Eye shadow as a liner on top; 2 coats of mascara
