Braid Envy

10 years ago by

I want a fishtail braid. And I want it now.

I’ve never really wanted one until this spread in Febraury Vogue. Sasha (with help from Eugene Souleiman) makes it look like the coolest, easiest, chicest thing you can do to your hair.

She also rocks a really cool double braid (I’m calling it that because I have no idea what the proper name is) and I’m equally as into that look.

  • You know , it is just darling on her, and the shot with the two braids really looks good, and innocent, and “prarie chic”. BUT, I have to say that with a too cute outfit, you can wind up looking like Pippi Longstockings. I have a friend who put her hair in braids, wore a white blouse and a full skirt above the knees, and everyone thought she was early for Halloween.

  • If you’re not little girl anymore (or ASAP Rocky) – no braids. Gorgeous on schoolgirls/cowgirls/photoshoots and not acceptible on woman. IMHO

  • YAY! Love them too!
Modern meets classic! Very much YAY!

  • YAY !! I’m obsessed with braids. I just find it so romantic and magic. I believe the fishtail braid is the more wearable because put on one side of the neck. I really like the double braid but it looks too school-girl alike. I have to buy the Vogue US to get this amazing shoot. Boho mood + braids = candies to my eyes. Now, I feel inspired to do this hair for my field trip tomorrow (we’re taking photographs in the nature with my class).
Gosh Alex, I really love your beauty posts. I feel like I could talk hours with you about beauty. **

  • She looks perfect with that hair.

  • One fishtail braid, if your hair is long enough – of course! It’s the best thing, worn on the side. Too bad my hair has never been past the boobs. But two braids is just too much. I don’t think it even looks good on the model, let alone in real life.
One braid or two – huge difference!

  • YAY :)
my absolute go to hair look on bad hair days especially.

  • Mine too when I had really long hair. Great in the city, less good in the yoga practice, good for climbing in the forest, very bad for powder skiing(tuck it inside your coat – don’t leave it flying free to look ‘cool’ your braid turns into a popsicle.)

  • the fishtail is so beautifully braided – I can never make mine look like that! It looks like she might had some help though (Souleiman), her natural hair doesn’t look like it could be that full (?). The 2nd braid is like a weaving master piece, it’s pretty insane. I think with the right outfit you CAN wear them both without looking like a prairie girl stepping out off of a western set :)

  • I have always loved them. When I was in grade school this one girl always did her hair this way, but I never could do mine boohoo.

  • Well…I don’t like them. Too complex, zero natural.

  • Fishtail braid is a HUGE YES

  • My hair is so fine, and it’s layered, that it doesn’t look great in braids, though I love them. Also, a guy once told me that I look so much better with my hair down, and now I’m paranoid about ever wearing it up/back.

  • I’m a huge fan of fishtails. I have thick, curly hair and in humid climates the fishtail braid saves me from frivolous frizz.

  • Love that too! And it reminds me, that my hairdresser offers a thing called “braid to go”, a 15 minute appointment that you can have with no big announcement and then off you go with a professional braid :-) must do the fish braid asap! xxx

  • I would love to do that to my hair, but can barely manage to put it into a pony tail most days…hey ho!

    http://www.girlinemenswear.com

  • Yay! I love braids, but I can never do them myself – they always turn out lopsided and then I have to pretend I did it like that on purpose.

Loooove the fishtail braid! I do it often especially in the summer! I learned to do it through a tutorial in you tube. But it takes much more time than a regular braid

  • Diane S. February, 4 2014, 2:20 / Reply

Yes, yes, yes on the fishtail. I suspect the “double braid” is a braid made of 5 parts instead of 3. I used to do some weaving and finished some wall hangings with this braid. I love it on hair!

  • I LOVE braids! I just recently mastered the art of braiding my hair and have been rocking a french braid multiple times a week ever since. I love that you can dress braids up to be super chic, but they can also be really casual or perfect for a workout. Now I need to figure out how to step outside of the traditional braid and try something like you’ve shared! I especially love the fishtail braid, but every time I’ve tried it hasn’t worked very well. Maybe I need to take another swing at it!

  • J’adore !

A single fish-tail//normal/5-strand braids looks chic on anyone of any age… but a pair of them only looks good on children! Doesn’t matter how non-prairie your outfit is – two is too much, and one is just right.

  • Dunno, some girls look great and adorable, some others… well, they just don’t… they so don’t… :)

  • Definnitely a YAY!
I really need to figure out how to do braids on myself. I’ve watched so many tutorials but when I attempt it, never works out!

    http://newbornfanatic.wordpress.com

  • The second braid is a five-stranded braid. :) They’re tricksy and I always thought they looked a little silly but I’m kinda digging it in that photo!
