I’m the first one to tell you to buy vintage.

Some of my most special pieces were vintage finds (like my Celine jeans, which we should come back to). But what I found out recently was that the mens side is just as good. Somewhere in Manhattan is a man who buys women’s shoes because HIS feet are that small. And to him I say, Thank you for my all black Prada wingtips in a size 37! I’m not too squeamish to buying vintage shoes …

I’m looking forward to scouring the mens section for big coats I can belt and chunky sweaters for fall, you never know when something might just be the perfect fit…

Do you have any vintage shopping tips?

  • Those shoes are gorgeous! I’m always stopping by thrift stores but I never find anything! So if anyone living in Manhattan can give me some places to go to, I’ll forever be grateful!

  • I love vintage! And these classy shoes are no exception :)

  • When you’re short on time, like you’re boyfriend is picking up sandwiches next door and you only have ten minutes tops, run your fingers through the racks and feel for good quality fabrics. My best friend told me about this trick and its been a huge time saver. Thrift stores can be overwhelming. This helps narrow done what you’re looking for.

  • That’s an incredibly useful tip. Thank you. x

  • I love to shop at man store for different reasons
    1-size are bigger
2-i am sure that my friend will not have this product or even see it because they will not adventure in the man department store..i am sure to find you there Brie:)

Try white leather laces on those and see them completely transformed…

  • awesome post Brie!
I admit I do love to shop at men departments and also vintage. why? because their coats are classic, great fabric and pretty sure won’t see tons of women wearing it. ahhah.
so I enjoy when they ask where did you get it!!!

  • Don’t fall completely in love with anything until you’ve tried it on: too often frustration and disappointment are vintage shopping companions. Also, don’t go when you “need” a certain piece, stellar finds never happen on those trips.

  • I’m fine with vintage clothes because you can wash them, but the shoes? People’s feet are different, everybody breaks in their shoes in a specific way, one can’t possibly be comfortable in other people’s worn shoes. And the leather soaked in sweat…no thank you.

I have the same ! Bought in 1999 in Bologna. Still have them and feel like sleepers ! In size 35. And yes vintage is soooooo ECOLO !!!!!

  • I spend my time hunting vintage. In addition to the excellent tip about running your fingers along the rack (which I do, religiously) I would say to take the garment to a window or a light source and look through the fabric. This makes it easier see any holes or pulled seams. A simple trick but it really cuts down on those frustrating moments when you get home and realize that there is a moth hole right on the right breast :-)

  • I work in vintage and the most important thing when shopping vintage is to remember that it is worth the money to alter your clothing. Chances are a vintage dress won’t fit perfectly so pay $30 or so to have it hemmed and fitted. Trust me it’s worth it. The quality of vintage clothing makes fast fashion look like absolute crap in a lot of ways.

  • I love shopping in the men’s section! The roomy sweaters and shirts wide enough for my broad shoulders fit me even better than what’s in the women’s department. Though, I did find a really amazing Max Mara tweed coat at a women’s second-hand store.

I have those same shoes in the same size. (Or at least, I think I do. Were they in the pile that I took to Second Time Around in Chelsea last fall?) They were one of my first pairs of designer shoes and they were THE shoe of the season. I have to go dig around in my closet to see if they’re still hiding in there. They’re not men’s shoes, definitely were for the ladies.
