Behind the Hill

Looking for a new statement accessory or home decoration to officiate the beginning of this summer season but don’t want to feed the hungry capitalist monster that is fast fashion?

Look no further. Actually, just peak Behind the Hill. (That pun was inevitable and we all know it. Moving on…)

Last year, French-Mexican-New Yorker Maud Lerayer quit her job to start her own business, Behind the Hill. Her love for Guatemala led her to ‘behind the hill’ and work with local woman artisans who use ancestral techniques to create unique and ethically-made home and fashion accessories. Today, she is presenting her latest collection at a pop-up in the LES.

The Spring Summer collection is handmade by amazing women from remote villages, and showcases earthy tones inspired by the subtlety of the indigenous color palette, as well as neon colors from the Huichol Indian crafting tradition. From handwoven blankets made of ixcaco, native Guatemalan cotton, and pillows made with seagrass from Yucatan, the brand uses the most raw and natural materials, respecting the traditional craft of its artisan partners.

Behind the Hill’s NYC pop-up will be open through June 3d at 2 Rivington St.

Forewarning: the Huichol art in the showroom may or may not lure you into a full apartment re-decoration.
