Alarm Clocks

Alarm Clocks

Phone alarms are the bane of my existence.

Dramatic, perhaps, but every night my alarm goes off at 8:45 like, “It’s time to meditate!” and I’m like…I’m still at work?!?

And honestly don’t even get me started on my morning alarm. If I told you how long I snooze it for you’d have me arrested. I’m just so annoyed by the sound of it! It feels like I’ve had to listen to this thing go off every morning for the last 200 years. I’ve even tried changing the tune (which just ends up scaring the s**t out of me) but I’m so quick to shut it up in the morning I end up sleeping through it.

Yes, I realize that I am the person setting these alarms but I’ve really had it up to here *hand raise* with them. You’d think by now someone would have invented an alarm that’s actually pleasant to wake up to, something that makes you excited to wake up. Maybe I should get a boyfriend??

Why have I never heard of this before! It looks / sounds amazing. I think I need to invest immediately! Thank you! x

  • One of my roommates sleeps through his alarm. It wakes me up one room over. One day after we’d both come home he says “And my alarm didn’t go off this morning”. I practically screamed at him that it did go off, he’s just dead to the world when he’s asleep.

I totally sympathize with you but mostly because I am probably that roommate!! I like to think I’m not THAT bad but honestly who knows when you’re asleep. Also “dead to the world” is so funny and sad because it’s accurate.

Radio alarm! Since moving to NYC, I’ve been waking up to classical music with Jeff Spurgeon on WQXR every morning, and it’s MUCH more pleasant than my phone alarm. Highly recommended.

Oh never thought of this…as long as it’s not a strange man’s radio voice waking me up, I think I may just give it a try! x

  • Idem. Trop dur le matin. Je ferais presque exprès de ne pas me lever pour lui montrer qui aura le dernier mot

  • Ooh, true–nothing like an an attractive early-bird man loving (and oh no, possibly judging) you to get a gal out of bed in the morning.

Alternatively, buy a plain old-fashioned alarm clock (I considered all sorts of fancy ones but actually the five dollar IKEA one is my favorite, for both form and function) and set it across the room on a high shelf. Impossible to sleep through. Impossible to snooze (it only has “off,” which even sleepy girls know is something that must not be pressed until you can be trusted stay dressed and upright). Pair it with pretty pjs and a sleep mask, and delight in the objective aesthetic tastefulness of your whole sleep situation.

Wow, you’ve really got his one sorted. May just have to give your method a try! x

  • Have you tried some app like Sleep Cycle? It tracks your sleep through movement detection or sounds. You set the alarm to any given time, let’s say 8 a.m. and it will ring at some point between 7:30 and 8:00, attempting to hit the moment when your sleep is the lightest, so you wouldn’t wake up with that shock like when you are in deep sleep mode. Sometimes half an hour won’t be enough to find any more adequate moment to ring the alarm, but other times it works like a charm. Plus, you get to see some cool statistics about your sleep over the days, like the quality of sleep, average time of going to bed and waking up, average time in bed, and other things.

Just to be clear, I’m not in any way involved commercially with the app, so I’m not trying to sell it out, I just really like it! haha

  • I keep hearing good things about dawn simulators, you might want to give them a try!

I had never heard of them until now and I 1000% need to try it out x

  • I’ve never used a phone alarm, you should really keep away the phone from your bedroom !!! I still use the radio alarm with the news. Unfortunatly my neighbor has an early phone alarm and it wakes me up through the wall !!!

I also use a dawn simulator – light gently and slowly rises (like a sun rise) and then gentle nature sounds can be added. The light comes on silently a few minutes before your “alarm” time and generally, it’s enough to wake me before even the music starts.
Bonus, you can do the same thing at night – the light will slowly fade out as you gently nod off to sleep. Love this invention and will never use another alarm. Enjoy.

Honestly thank you so much – I had never heard of a dawn simulator before but it sounds like heaven and I can’t wait to get one and try it out x

  • Go buy that dawn simulator alarm clock Natalie! its the best. Such a difference when I wake up at home with philips wake up light or in hotels with an oldfashioned alarmclock. and added advabtage, the sound of birds is really peacrful too.

  • Just get a cat! Mine will not let me oversleep. She touches me with a paw and meows and stares at me. If I try to ignore, she leans against and slams the door. Very effective! The only problem is she doesn’t understand daylight savings time, and it’s a real struggle for a week or so

Sounds like a great plan only I’m allergic! Though now that you mention it, a puppy doesn’t sound like such a bad idea ;) x

  • I have a boyfriend, you know, and i’m still pushing on snooze…
