A Seat at the Bar

A Seat at the Bar

This maybe a silly thing to contemplate, but lately I’ve been wondering what kind of bar person I am. I think about this mostly when trying to make plans with friends or different groups of friends who will come together for a night. And not for a special occasion, holiday or birthday, just plain old “let’s grab a drink” type of spot. You can never please everyone, so I figure best to just go with what you like most.

I’ve always loved a good ole dive bar, and couldn’t be further from a sports bar gal. I don’t enjoy clubby setups for so many reasons, and feel out of my element in super fancy places – but that last one could be because I spend all of my “expensive cocktail money” on other things (like food. And rent. And beauty products). That said, going somewhere nice for a single martini and great people watching is always good in my book. So, I’m still figuring it out and until I feel more flush, I think dive bars are my go-to.

What’s your bar-style??

  • I am *so* not a dive bar girl. That said…my husband *is* a dive bar guy. And I’ve had some great, awesome experiences in dives. But if I had to choose, I’m sort of a wine bar girl. Which sounds way more high maintenance and fussier than I am IRL. But I work from home, and it’s not glamorous…so I like to dress a bit when I go out, and put on my heels, and enjoy my surroundings (which, in most wine bars, it seems, are a clean and elegant and a bit of MCM which I also love). Plus, there’s better wine. ;)

  • Sorry for the out of the subject question but would if be possible to know where to find that gorgeous fur collared overpiece :) Maybe Tapas bars? I don’t know any in New york but here in Montréal we have pretty nice ones.

  • My main pet peeves with bars are too much noise and lack of seating (and I’m still in my twenties, haha!). I like a “grown-up” atmosphere but nothing stuffy… Barn Joo and Craft Bar in the Flatiron area are my favorite happy hour spots :)

  • Definitely a wine bar girl here!

Habitant à Londres, je dirai que l’endroit où je me sens le mieux est un bon pub anglais, de préférence à la décoration bien travaillée. Il y a toujours une ambiance conviviale et on peut venir habillées comme on veut, c’est top!

  • I’m not a bar person at all. I don’t have the money. I like to gather at one’s home or outside. I don’t drink so I prefer socializing over an activity – hiking, seeing an exhibition, playing board games. Gathering and talking without doing anything isn’t my thing at all.

Totally a dive bar girl over here :) I’m utterly mesmerised by this photo.

  • Ana, I love the photo too! And I thought, ah what kind of bar girl am I? Well, this one looks like a good place to start…

  • My husband plays music, and therefore, I am often alone at bars… not dive bars though. Ever. I am consistent with where I drink, eat, and merry meet, and the only I become (am 41) the less late nights appeal to me.
