Let's Talk About

A Revolution

A Revolution

It’s so refreshing when publications take a stand about how women are represented, celebrate natural beauty, because our own perception of how we look and feel is often defined by this. It’s something I think about a lot, personally, and recently more than usual. It’s also something that we’re always thinking about on the blog — how we can show real women and celebrate them, whatever their passion or stature.

The Pirelli calendar that was just released, shot by Annie Leibovitz, is my dream Pirelli calendar. Where women were overtly sexy (not saying that’s always a bad thing, though…), you have notable women of all shapes, careers, nationalities photographed true to their personality. It’s beautifully uniform in the way everything is shot in classic Leibovitz style (and all black and white), but each subject is given room to show who they are…

Serena Williams is shown in all of her athletic strength, Patti Smith is, of course, effortlessly cool, and Amy Schumer is depicted where she sees herself positioned: on the extreme edge of feminism. And others, too, including Yoko Ono — see it all here.

I really can’t get over how cool this is!!! It’s worth noting that this shift, Pirelli’s decision to frame women in a different, accepting — or even celebratory — way, follow’s Playboy’s decision to stop publishing full nudes as of March 2016. Do I smell a revolution?
