The Lightness of Layering
7 years ago by Brie Welch
Catching Coco in the evening light in the Lower East Side, it’s hard not to stare. Especially with that all white ensemble, which, as much as it looks like an origami wrap dress, is actually three different pieces – paired together to achieve a coup de grace in the field of light layering.
I mention this distinction because it’s easy for our own wardrobes to become stale. The classic, simple, and usually essential pieces suddenly feel boring and tired. But with a bit of imagination and a real knack for wrapping, you can easily create a look that feels interesting, like it was plucked straight off a Yohji Yamamoto mood board. Having multiple pieces in the same color scheme only increases your chances of success!
In the case of Coco (a stylish Australian who works with Maryam Nassir Zadeh, one of our other favorite women), it starts with an a-line tank dress, then a long sleeve wrap top, garnished with an exaggerated sleeve white button shirt…only it’s unbuttoned and wrapped around her waist. Et voila!
Your replication doesn’t need to be exact, but experimenting can be fun! I’m often caught wearing button down shirts as skirts, executed with this very idea in mind. Light layering is perfect for summer, easy to add on and easy to take off…

Coco est somptueuse dans cette tenue ! Le layering est effectivement une excellente option, on a tendance (moi la première) à porter ses vêtements au premier degrés alors que les possibilités sont multiples :)

Not quite sure how the look was achieved but definitely worth experimenting, thanks!
Hi Jolain!
Happy to explain – the base of the look is a simple white wrap dress, then we put a wrap blouse over it which is tied in the back, and we finished the look by tying a shirt around her waist at an angle so the tie complements her waist. (Everything is from Elizabeth & James, which you can find direct links to in the credits!)
Hope this is helpful to everyone :)
This is such an editorial look!! I love the gauzy ethereal effect. I saw the Fashion angel.

Actually stumble upon this by accident, but really love your collection of style features, esp this one because I actually have way too many white shirts.
