YES to this look!

First of all, because I’m a huge fan of this light trench coat from Zara, which is the most perfect piece for Spring — I would have bought it myself if I hadn’t already found an amazing one at the Acne sample sale the other day.

Oh, and let’s talk about those sandals for a second, right?
They are this summer’s Céline’s — very jolie-laide. I don’t think I would have dared buy them myself, but they go so, and I mean SO well, with Lilli’s slender figure! Don’t you think?

Lilli is wearing: Coat, Zara ; Top, Lyn Devon ; Jeans, Zara ; Shoes, Céline ; Earring, Dior ; Bag, Céline

    sorry.

  • The trench coat I simply adore. But the shoes? Not to so much.

The whole Birkenstock/ugly shoe trend – actually a trap (as all trends are) for consumers to buy into something that has been heralded as chic? Are there actually people who in all honesty would have deemed these shoes chic on their own accord, hadn’t Phoebe Philo done it first?

A blog post on this discussion would be amazing :) I’ve touched upon it already here: http://lepetitmatin.wordpress.com/2014/04/13/fashion-sheep-birkenstocks-and-furkenstocks/

    Thanks!

  • I’m totallt digging the whole flatform sandal thing going on this season.
A tiny bit afraid to pull em off myself though, gotta find the right ones.

  • I’m not sure, which one of them: http://bit.ly/1mcQGXu or this one: http://bit.ly/1mcRdbT ?

  • Love the light flowy trench and somehow I’m totally falling in love with those platform sandals lately! xx

  • I cannot say that I like the jolie-laide thing. I think shoes should have a graceful shape and not enlarge the proportion of the foot unnecessarily. I much prefer your Miu Miu purely jolie shoes! :-)

    A+

I hold myself 100% responsible for the jolie-laide sandal trend this season. Last summer, I rediscovered an ancient pair of Prada Sport (remember the red bar on the back?) sandals complete with wide leather straps that velcro’d in place and it was love reborn. So comfortable, so “Celine-y.” I took them to Paris for four weeks and wore them with a floaty chiffon skirt from Lillith and with khaki shorts scrambling up and down Mont St. Michel. Obviously, the fashion cognoscenti spotted me and exclaimed “Voila! Zhat middle-age American woman has ze perfect sandals for Spring!” (Submitted with a serious wink.)

  • You must be the one who told my husband to pull out his old Prada mule/slides. As he was marveling about how long he had had them (since 1980’s) I was marveling that I hadn’t hid them long ago….Lucky for him the trend is back…he can now pretend they are vintage :)

Jolie laide? What the heck is that? It sounds like noise. You’re not responsible, so don’t feel bad. People had been wishing they had flat-form sandals even before stores started making them. Vagabond started that before Celine, Prada and such came on the bandwagon, I think. This is certainly not a trend that came from designers. And its definitely predates last summer. They are perfect for anytime you don’t want to look like you are on girlieness overload.

Je me sens trop cooool !!!!
Par contre les sandales, over my dead body

  • Beautiful photo! Love the trench coat.

  • Those sandals are no! no! no!

One of those trends we look back a think “How could this be fashionable” Like the complied 80

  • I don’t know why but I don’t like those sandals… I mean not those particularly but the style it self.
    love the coat though

  • No-absolutely not. I of course love 90% of the outfit, but the shoes? No way. When I saw them, they immediately reminded me of something my grandma would have worn because of severe foot problems. I find “fashion” to be such a funny thing–I can appreciate most things but every once in awhile I am repulsed by something (such as the shoes in this case). Of course, my motto when it comes to fashion and style is more in line with “What Would Emmanuelle Alt Do?” And the answer to that question in this case would most certainly be: Not wear those shoes!!

  • Love this perfect wardrobe staple – a big Yes! The shoes are fabulous, too…

    xx, Kristi

  • Here we will have to agree to desagree. I don’t like them at all. In fact, my eyes are hurting!
At least they are practical: if she breakes a foot, she has her orthopaedic shoes already.

  • They look AMAZING on her figure! When I first saw those sandals on Céline’s collection I didn’t like them very much, but they truly look amazing with this outfit! But (still) I wouldn’t buy them for myself…

    PS: Beautiful photo!

  • Yes it looks good on her….only on her or other slender girls…but a curvy layday like myself would look like a heffalump….sigh! Great shot!

I totally agree with a previous commenter who points out that those shoes could be classified as a “trend trap.” They’re not exactly classic and maybe sort of ugly.

That being said, I can’t help but love them. I’m not usually swayed by very trendy items, but for some reason I am totally into the priest/orthopedic inspired shoe trend. I’ll at least have a pair of Birkenstocks by summer.

  • Those shoes. Just no.

  • J’adore! Le comble de l’élégance décontractée!

  • The sandals are a no. No number of magazines or blogs will ever change my mind. They make her feet look like boats (i.e. huge in size!!) , as my mother would say. Just terrible and lacking in grace and femininity. Each to their own though.

  • Martine May, 3 2014, 5:40 / Reply

LOVE the shoes. They make the look. If she had typical prissy shoes there would not be one reason to look twice. Besides, such shoes are extremely flattering. When you have teeny feet, everything else just looks large.
