How do you go about writing a column for Vogue?
Honestly, I had no idea. I used to dream about having my own column in a magazine I love like all my idols. I think back to Françoise Sagan, Nora Ephron or Woody Allen…
I thought it would be the greatest, coolest, most awesome thing ever. It would give me a chance to write in a different way, longer texts, more thought out, different than I do on the blog, but still staying super personal. But I knew it was the kind of thing that you don’t pitch to someone, they come to you with it.
Of course I dreamt of Paris Vogue, but I’ve got lots of dreams… Direct a film, learn to surf, write a song, start painting again, write a
cookbook with my father… Lots of them.
Sometimes it’s good just to dream though, you know?
And then one day after a runway show, Emmanuelle Alt said to me, “Why don’t we grab a coffee sometime.”
Coffee? Ummm…. Of course! Every time we run into each other, Emmanuelle is so great. She’s so funny, cool, interesting, all of it. Of course, I’m still a little starstruck with her but I’ve grown since starting the blog, so I am able to keep my composure around her.
… Most of the time at least.
And then some other times it happened that I try a joke that misses its mark by a few hundred yards.
It’s just that I admire her. I get the impression that there’s a lot I can learn from her, like how to find my place in fashion, or how to be a modern woman, or how to wear skinny jeans.
So one day, when I was in Paris, I scheduled to meet her for a coffee. I arrived at the offices of Paris Vogue, went into her big white office where she was finishing a conversation with Capucine (the beautiful fashion & marketing editor). I didn’t really know where to sit or stand. (I decided years ago that my shyness was never really holding me back)(so I just stayed where I was…)
We chatted a little, laughed, and then she turned to me and said “Garance, would you want to write a column for us?”
Now, in the 6 years I’ve had my blog, it wasn’t the first time I’d been offered to work with a magazine. It wasn’t actually the first time I’d been asked to work with Vogue Paris, but in the past, it had never felt like it was the right time or the right job. Sometimes, even a very prestigious offer can feel like it’s not the right place for you and in that case, even if it hurts to say no, I try to go with what I feel in my gut.
This time it felt perfect. I got so excited I thought I was going to explode. But I just said :
“I’d love to!”
(It was no time to play hard to get.)
She told me what she was picturing and then called Olivier Lalanne, the amazing adjunct editor-in-chief of Paris Vogue, and the three of us all talked together.
I left our coffee date. I couldn’t believe my ears. With no warning, my dream became reality.
I could write about whatever I’d like. Be as free as you’d like, they told me. Don’t try to change the way you write. Don’t try to be “Vogue.” It’s your voice we want.
Voilà. And the rest you can imagine… Write, doubt, rewrite, redoubt, reread, change everything, and end up sending everything in and then die of anxiety right after clicking “send.” Then you want to unsend the e-mail to change one sentence (maybe if I hop on a plane to Paris right now – who cares if it’s 2 a.m.? – and sneak into the Vogue offices – I know how to get the door open with a paperclip – I’ll be just in time to delete the e-mail that I so stupidly sent.)
And then you wait. You wait and tell yourself that they hated it but whatever, it’s fine, move on. You wait and tell yourself that it’s all going to work out. It’ll be fine… You wait. You wait.
And then one day, you get an e-mail that says, “We loved it!” and you run off to wake up Scott with your news.
I still haven’t come down off my cloud. Well, I guess I have, but just to work on my second column. I hope the third soon! Wahoo!
My first column was in September’s Vogue, along with a very cool redesign of the layout. Thank you to everyone who has already sent me e-mails and tweets and saying they enjoyed it. Nothing brings me more joy… I’ll try to see if I can have the column translated and published here. Much love ! G

Je l’ai lue et vraiment mes félicitations car tu as su trouver le ton juste : pas trop familier (on est dans Vogue!) ni guindé, mais avec le mot juste pour chaque chose. je sais pas si je me fais comprendre mais en clair : non seulement ta rubrique était drôle, mais elle reflétait des sentiments simples et vrais.

Et ben moi j’ai adoré l’article , plein de finesse et de classe , et je trouve que tu as su faire transparaître ta personnalité puisque tu parles de ta “practique du smocking” drôle d’expression que j’emploie) , en laissant place au rêve et l’on pouvait totalement se mettre dans la peau de la fille qui arrive en soirée , habillé de noir , très androgyne mais follement féminine en même temps , franchement merci , cela donne un coût de jeune au Vogue , une nouvelle air s’ouvre .

Ahhh, je viens à peine de rentrer de vacances. Mon blog est en friche, ma boîte mail au bureau a menacé de m’arraché tout le captial repos que j’ai accumulé ces deux dernières semaines. Mais cette excellente nouvelle m’a boostée plus que jamais. Félicitations!!!!!
En fait, je découvre à peine ton post. Dimanche, une fois le pied posé sur le sol belge (oui, l’extension de la France), je me suis ruée dans le premier “Relay” du coin, au bord de l’asphyxie, question de vie ou de mort, il me fallait ma dose de mode….inutile de dire que mes doigts n’ont pu résister à l’appel envoûtant du Vogue Paris (exceptionnel en ce moment). Tiens-donc, différentes couvertures? J’opte pour Kate. Valeur sûre. De toute façon, je manquais de temps pour tergiverser. Monsieur, derrière les portes vitrées, sourcillait déjà en me faisant comprendre qu’il tombait de fatigue, notre petit garçon de 2 ans sautillant dans ton les sens à ses pieds. Une fois posée à la maison, fondue dans mon canapé, je feuillette doucement les pages, jusqu’à tomber sur les recto verso 235-236! Le Smoking – Mode d’emploi. J’aime le titre – HUMEUR – est-ce là que se trouvait concentré tout l’HUMOUR du Vogue Paris? J’attaque donc. Jusque là j’avoue qu’avec la fatigue, je n’avais pas réalisé qu’il s’agissait de ton article. Je le lis avec entrain, je me sens à l’aise, je le trouve vrai, je le trouve parlant, je me dis….mais qui a écrit ce magnifique article? C’est alors que je m’arrête au point final si particuliers…mais toujours pas le nom de l’auteur. Je reviens sur la première page, je réalise comme si la terre venait de me tomber dessus qu’il s’agit de ton écriture, de ton illustration, avant de voir qu’en dessous du mot HUMEUR – était écrit en lettres écarlate Garance Doré!!! Je pousse un cri de joie! Chéri, ça c’est la classe!!! Tu sais Garance, celle que je suis, celle qui dont je suis fan, mon modèle, mon gourou, mon maître Yoda du fashion bloggin….celle qui m’inspire et dont je ne parviens pas à acheter la cover pour iPhone (pas livré chez nous), est dans Vogue Paris. Vogue Paris, tu t’en rends compte!!?? Le pauvre, happé par le sommeil, m’entendais gesticuler au loin.. C’est vraiment génial…grommela-t-il. Sentant mes yeux lui brûler la peau, il décide de les ouvrir…et me regarde, à moitié endormi…”oui c’est génial ma chérie. Tu viens te coucher?” Oui, j’arrive. J’ignorais hier soir que toutes tes fans étaient en symbiose pour te souhaiter le meilleur! J’arrive en retard, mais l’émotion & la fierté partagée.
Tu es notre modèle! Merci Garance de rendre le “Yes, we can” une réalité.

i love that you were so honest in this post about getting this dream opportunity. i think that’s why you’ll succeed; because even with the amount of success you’ve already had, you’re still willing to show your vulnerability – that you are just like everyone else who is chasing a dream and just not quite there yet (only, you’re pretty much there) – the experience, the doubts, the anxiety, the awkward moments when you don’t know where to stand or sit for your meeting – which all allow the reader to truly feel for you and experience the joy with you when you hear that dream offer come from someone you admire! congratulations! truly!

Mon vénérable ordi a ressuscité ! Et je fais quoi ? Je fonce chez toi et Scott !!! que vois-je … smoking mode d’emploi … je me dis quoi elle vante la clope chez Vogue ! Moi qui ne porte jamais de noir, (enfin ça vient un peu) j’avais pas envie d’acheter le Vogue, ben j’ai foncé pour lire ta rubrique. Et je dois dire que tu t’en sors super bien, que je suis trop contente que tu fasses le team avec E.Alt et O.Lalanne que je trouve trop canons tous les deux ! J’ai pensé à cette géniale photo de cette beauté australienne en smoking blanc et converse assis sur une chaise ! bravissimo !
En tout honnêteté, j’aurai 18ans dans 6jours, et je n’avais jamais lu un VOGUE ! Je préférai me “conserver” et garder vraiment ma vision naïve de la mode (vogue est quelque chose de trop grand, trop impressionnant pour moi..). Mais quand j’ai vue qu’il y avait ton nom, je me suis dis “allez, c’est le moment”, et je dois dire que ça m’a plut.. beaucoup plut, énormément même ! Et je ne dis pas ça pour faire ma gentille, mais je trouve que ton écriture est de loin celle que je préfère.. elle paraît tellement réelle et plus vrai que le reste de Vogue.. Elle me “traduit” un peu tout le thème du magazine. Et grâce à toi, tout les mois, le magazine aura une nouvelle lectrice.
Bon courage pour la suite et j’espère que tes écrits seront toujours aussi bons, mais je n’en doute pas.

One more question, woul you be able to expand a bit on why those previous offers from Vogue or other magazines were not for you? It would be really interesting to read a blog post that expands on the tempting offers you have had and why you had to turn them down. I ask because frm whereI am sitting, no matter where you are in your career righting for Paris Vogue or any other magazine could only be a step up. You know what I mean?

I felt your words .I to had a dream years ago after graduating to illustrate for Italian Vogue ,influenced by Stavrannos,Pasantino,and Antonio (who I hired and directed to do some work while at I Magnin later on ) .a client commissioned me to do Illustrations in Italian Vogue and the New Yorker . Made little money , but was high for two weeks after they came out . So I eventually worked my way to Creative Director .Now just starting my own Clothing line .A new beginning …..isn’t it great to LOVE what we do?

Directos parce que le VOGUE avait changé de maquette je suis allée acheter le nouveau mag, et quand j’ai vu ta rubrique, mon dieu j’ai failli mourir de bonheur. Eh oui, à force de te suivre c’est moment là on les vit presque (presque!) comme toi… Et il était parfait.

But we forget everything you can see it has been a dream of someone… And then we are full of idiots who tell you keep your feet in the ground and don’t look any where else… What is the risk? To fly?!
Je fus tout d’abord surprise par la présence d’une rubrique que je ne connaissais pas dans le Vogue. Et puis, j’ai commencé à lire. Et puis, j’ai très vite adoré ! C’est léger, c’est frais, c’est drôle : “Peut-on porter un smoking dans un restaurant no smoking ?” Je crois bien que c’est ce qui manquait chez Vogue. J’attends avec impatience votre prochaine chronique pour le mois d’octobre !
J’ai enfin lu ton article (avec presque un mois de retard “honte à moi” !!). Moi qui n’avais pas eu le temps d’aller acheter le Vogue de Septembre, l’ai trouvé sur le bureau d’une amie, miracle, je me suis ruée dessus pour y chercher The Article de Garance Doré ! Et j’ai été tout simplement séduite, j’ai ADORE !! Comme une évidence, le Smoking ! Moi qui cherchais un nouveau style entre professionnel et chic, le Smoking ! Perfect ! Même si du haut de mes 19 ans la seule chose qu’on dirait de moi serait “Mais pour qui se prend-t-elle ?”.. A ton avis Garance, pouvons nous porter un smoking lorsqu’on à 19ans et que nous sommes une petite étudiante en publicité ?
je les ai lu, vos articles sur le smoking, puis le fashion week, et juste pour vous dire qu’ils sont parfaits!!! votre sens de l’humour je l’adore, et vos mots sur la mode est vraiment pointu, vous savez c’est comme ce qu’on a toujours senti mais on n’est pas capable de le formuler de façon si franc mais si cool tout de même. votre rubrique est un nouveau souffle a la vogue fr que je trouve parfois un peu trop “noble”. Je me sens terriblement stupide, c’est un peu mon blond inconscient qui revient pour le coup! J’ai commencé à lire ton blog il y a très très … très longtemps. Au tout début. Et puis quand tu es partie t’installer à new york, j’ai laché tout doucement. J’y allais juste de temps en temps, intéressée à moitié. Et tu sais pourquoi!? Betement parce que c’était écrit en anglais et que même si je le comprends, ce n’est pas la même chose. Et bien aujourd’hui, je viens de découvrir l’icone fr/en en haut de ton blog, et miracle! et je viens de relire tous les articles que j’avais manqué. Enfin, une partie du moins.. Et à nouveau, j’ai ri, j’ai été émue, je me suis tantot retrouvée, tantot projetée dans ce que tu vis. C’est ce que tu sais faire de mieux! Toucher les gens.
Et cet article – je vais surement etre la milllième fille à te le dire- me dit d’y croire. De continuer de croire en mes reves et de persévérer. Merci Garance <3
