black tights garance dore photos

Up Tight

9 years ago by

It’s funny, at the first sign of cold this winter at the Studio, we all got out our black tights and started wearing skirts, shorts, and a lot of super short things. I started wearing my thigh-high boots and, anyway, it was like tights had suddenly liberated our legs.

It’s probably because they just need to be slightly opaque for you to feel covered, kind of like wearing leggings. It’s also maybe because it feels a little cleaner, safer – I don’t know if you remember my adventures with mini skirts but, honestly, I won’t even risk wearing them in the city anymore. I have to admit, tights are kind of a good cover. You don’t have to have perfectly landscaped legs – you can still wear skirts, shorts, and short dresses without overthinking your wax or tan.

Anyway, tights are kind of a winter bonus (there has to be at least one good thing about winter, right?). I even bought some polka dot tights recently that everyone went crazy over. Apparently (I have no idea why) it’s super sexy.

Are you like me? Is it a lot easier for you to wear short skirts and shorts in the winter because of tights?

  • Actually, opaque tights are the only ones that do not make me gag :) I hate sheer, nude tights! The ones on the photos are gorgeous and my particular favourits are the lurex ones.

makes one wonder if the women of the past thought about gloves in the same way that we think about tights today.

Before bare arms were acceptable in public, would polka-dotted gloves have been extra exciting?

  • I love wearing tights with skirts. The opaque ones do make you feel more covered.

  • Aaaaah, yes!!! Tights allow you to wear literally everything in the winter – from short skirts to sandals depending on the weather. It’s the secret to wearing culottes in the winter as well!

  • Tights would definitely make me more comfortable wearing a mini in the city, as I still recall a bad incident years ago with bare legs. Plus, I just can’t get my legs looking flawless in the summer, no matter what I try…and the knees are starting to go.

  • Tights, and Wolford of course, are the best. They go with everything from thigh-high boots to Repettos. They make winter sexy.

  • Doing it for years and years and years….even when I ws a child. Love it. Very comfy. Love the skirt so much I would like to have it.

    Ah, bonne idée le plumetis!

  • do they actually keep you warm though? I’m going to montreal and need to find creative way to stay warm and look cute

  • What about the vivid hosiery colors at NY Fashion Week? So many plum, blue, green tights or socks coming out of the shoes! Would you wear that?

Hi Garance, I agree 100%. I’m always longing for tights season to wear all the stuff in my wardrobe shorter than knee-length. It’s because I’ve pale, pale pale skin and I’m a 20den-nude-sheer-thights-hater.

  • Complètement !! :-) (humm quel pertinence ce com !) :-)

  • If I want to wear skirts or shorts, I have to wear tights for most of the year as I live in a cold country.

I hate tights! Why? Because of the upper part! My hips are considerably wider than my waist so the tights make it look even worse.
The tights that come up the waist make me look like a pear. The ones that end lower just leave some part of my body out.
And the tights never correlate with the waistlines of skirts and shorts anyway.

I hope somebody else has experienced the same issues.

Plus the tights make me feel like a sausage in the wrapping film.

    Any good advice here?

  • @R, have you tried control top tights? I had the issue of muffin tops (agreed, looks like a stuffed sausage, haha); I got a pair of black opaque control top from h&m, not much $$. They have a smooth waistband panel, not the separate tight elastic band sewn on at the top, which digs into the waist. They have held up well (I’ve had them for 2-3 winters now) and gives a smooth line without looking lumpy under close-fitting dresses, almost like spanx. A tip, though (personally speaking), I’m a medium in everything, but bought a small and they’re perfect (in those particular style of tights from h&m). Good luck! xxgg

  • Thanks so much for the tips GIGINYC! I’ll definitely try H&M.

  • I love tights, and here in London they’re pretty much a year round thing anyway!

    Fleece lined Plush tights FTW!
Also: I’ve been seeing a lot of girls downtown with thigh-highs (even over jeans) – it looks cute, with the right outfit!

  • YES tights are amazing in the winter! I feel warmer wearing tights with a (longer) skirt than wearing a pair of pants. When it’s super cold, I wear two pairs of tights to stay cozy. It’s a fun way to experiment with diff combos and layers too!

  • Yes, yes, yes. Always. Live in them in winter. I also love grey tights. And a kind of taupe colour I had for a few winters (I hand wash) went with a surprising amount of my wardrobe: brown, grey, green. &c. It’s fun combining.

But black are classic. Adore all the shoes shown above.

  • as a guy, i am a huge fan of gals wearing tights at any season! so if you enjoy wearing them, awesome! i’m sure there are plenty more folks out there that appreciate it as well! two thumbs up!

  • I don’t know if I could wear shorts in summer but in winter, with tights, wearing them is so much easier. Same for skirts.

  • who’s legs…it’s all about the legs …

  • Oui !

  • Absolutely. They also feel wonderful on the skin :)

  • I actually never realized it but this is exactly what I do every year! I find myself wearing dress and shorter skirts in the winter and I have a drawer fulll of black tights of different textures and of course the good heavy cotton for warmth. I guess I am a creature of habit and you put the words on my experience.

  • Tights! Love them! Actually they are my main cloth during l’hiver, I almost never wear trousers or jeans so…long life to the tights!

    http://www.pardonmyobsession.com/

  • Exactement !

  • I’m actually quite the opposite. Tights and leggings irritate me, so I am walking into the fall as far as possible with bare legs and in the spring quite long with pants and socks. Until my legs are nicely prepared and tanned.. :-)

  • 100% d’accord!

  • where can you buy the skirt? can’t find it on the site!

  • Hello!
This article just made me so happy! It’s because I finally found somebody who shares my passion for tights during winter months! When the very first cold wind comes and snow covers the streets, I immediately focus on skirts, shorts and dresses only. I don’t really want to call it a ‘fetish’ because it sounds so ‘no-no’ and naughty, but when in winter, I always somehow cheat on trousers :). Paradoxically (or not?), I feel much warmer in tights, especially when it comes to wool and other warm materials. It’s like everything what needs to be protected is protected, and you still feel quite free to move.
Yay, is there the Tight-Pro-Association or something? I wouldn’t mind joining :D

    Regards!
    Katarina
