I totally live a dream life of surfing*, and the other day I think I understood why.

Not only does becoming a good surfer take a lot of hard work, but you also have to wake up early.

We went to Rockaway with Ashley, Bailey and Jessica the other morning to catch the first morning waves. Five in the morning, big smiles (and great style too), it kind of made me rethink my life priorities**. And watching them walk on the beach with the first rays of sun, throw themselves into the ocean and come back to the city a few hours later as New York is still sleeping, you realize that once it gets in your blood, surfing must be pretty powerful. A real passion.

Do you have anything that pulls you out of bed?

————

* I’ve been dreaming about surfing forever and never actually tried – well I did paddle this year so… – all right, not the same at all.
** Like when I wake up at 7am to go to yoga I’m so proud of myself I talk about it all day and in the evening I get drunk just to celebrate.

PS: Some have found a solution for the ever perfect wave. A perpetual wave, on a river, in Munich. Incredible!

On Bailey: Swim top, Maui Girl; Swim bottom, Acacia; Wetsuit, Roxy; Sunglasses, Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane; Sweatshirt, American Apparel; Board, Yater from Rockaway Beach Surf Club.

On Jessica: Hat, O’Neill; Swimsuit, O’Neill; Wetsuit, Roxy; Shorts, American Eagle; Sunglasses, Carrera; Board, Almond.

On Ashley: Swimsuit, Roxy; Wetsuit, Cynthia Rowley; Shorts, Suger; Hoodie, T by Alexander Wang; Sunglasses, Carrera; Board, Con.

  • wow, funny and grat pics!

  • Beautiful images of beautiful strong healthy women. It is always refreshing to see images of strong women in a beautiful and empowering setting. What makes magazine loose ground is the antiquated/dated image of women in often helpless to absurd settings which mean nothing to me. Blogs and digital media are allowing new voices to tell the better story of women, the one where we gain weight after kids, we surf without make-up, we have amazing careers and honest mothers.

more more more please of this type of beautiful work

  • Totally agree with you here. These images are powerful because you feel the strength and motivation these women have- all while they’re doing something that makes them feel great. So glad you captured these moments (and so early in the morning!), Garance!

I totally agree – beautiful images of real women – healthy, curvy, strong! I wish women like these are featured on blogs more. They have attitude, style and confidence!

  • I like these shoots, but nothing but my puppy can take me off bed!!

    beautiful pics! I’m officially jealous!

  • I tried surfing this year for the first time, and I want to do it again ! :) so much fun…

  • I’ve been going to Rockaway over 10 years and I used to get funny looks from friends telling them I’m spending a beach day there (and not at Jones Beach, Hamptons, Fire Island etc), but I like it there, it is close to the city, I can get there early, leave early and still have time to hang out in the city. It’s interesting to see how now Rockaway becomes “trendy” now, as Williamsburg back or Bushiwick now.
Here is my short video of “no-fashion” surfing at Rockaway if interested.

    Great video!

    Bises.

  • The gym! I’ve been a morning gym rat since my freshman year of college, and now it’s such a weekday habit that I can’t imagine NOT working out before work. Weekends are bliss, though :)

  • I grew up 20 minutes away from a beach and always wanted to learn how to surf. But for whatever reason, I just didn’t. I guess I just don’t have a surfer’s constitution.

    Aloha Garance!

Ahem…we’ve been talking about your surf dream on an off for years now. So here i am again to encourage to come to Kauai, the home of surf… I’ve lived here 25 years now, (after 10 years in Manhattan). Many of the women surfers who broke the barriers to surf for women in serious competition..Rell Sun, (oahu), Margo Oberg, Kauai)…on and on….have now contributed greatly to the near normalcy (i hardly even notice “girl surfers” any more when i’m athe beach daily talking surf checks with the girls…and watching them paddle out , by the bunches…like it’s normal as rain!!! there’was just an article about some of the top women surfers..with the girls.mentioning how they are all “feminine now…and great surfers. Back in the day….girls/women had to be tough to make it ‘by’ the guys….but shooot….bethany hamilton straightednd that out. Right this minute Brianna Cope…at 17…has just moved up from number 64 to number 3 (ah, that’s in the world, on the circuit) and off she goes on ‘the tour” to SA with her dad! I’ve watched this confident crew grow up on water…just wonderful to witness!! It is such a souful sport, and learning from the top teachers in the world in the most beautiful water and waves will make the learning easier….yes we have beginner waves here . It’s a sport of the heart, first and foremost (as i see you are getting it…it’s an island thang, Girl!….you know about that yearning….the experience and the water is just so damn beautiful! And no wetsuits)! I could go on and on about alll the fantastic ‘water women” i know. Indeed, it’s such a wonderful time in history….out here i’d say about 30 to 40 percnt paddling out are women every day…and i love, that i hardly even notice. it’s become so normal now! YEA!

Let me know when your ready….the waves will be here….a million beaches and every wave has a name (i love that)….as in “well where you gonna be? Acid Drop or maybe running waters or waiohai’/?. ..And, personally. I love “surf checks”…, we’re a fussy wave bunch here….we can have anything, so part of the culture is ‘surf checks” of a whole bunch of waves w/in a mile..tops!

Appreciate some love for us out here….we’ve got a load of hurricanes lined up..heading our way….so surf is excellent….but we do welcome all love and prayers that they’ll just decide to skip us!

Stay tuned! And when you’re ready we got your back with helpful, mellow teachers…and then onew day soon, you will paddle out…..and stand up and get a full, fantastic ride in…and then you’re a gonner. Hey, you move to Kauai and start a surf blog too:)

    Warmest Aloha!
    Annabella

ps i used to go to Rockaway too, when nothing else was doable. Loved it, great city beach !

    Happy continuing vacation!

See you in Kauai soon! E Komo Mai!

    The Dawn Patrol …

  • I live in DC. What gets me up and out early is a bike ride through the city — when it’s empty and quiet. It feels like I own it; like it’s my city. In a city that reveres power — I feel a little bit powerful when I glide alone by the White House in the pre-dawn. Anyhow, that’s what does it for me.

  • Hi Garance! love the article, I tried surfing lats year and love it! it’s never too late to try, especially on a long board! One question, I LOOOOOVE the short wetsuit (red black and blue) but your link is not working…:( where can I find it?

  • Hello Garance,

Superbes photos…

Garance, I just love you. You’re the cutest in the world.

  • love passion……I am a morning person…..but i a balanced…my wakeup passion is the sun…

  • So nice and refreshing to see photos of healthy female bodies! Not thin, anorexic bodies, but strong and fit ones. Thank you, Garance, for showing some variety. As for surfing, it is on my bucket list for sure! Why do I keep putting it off? Partly it’s because I feel like the ocean is extremely strong and powerful, so I have a certain fear of it. But also a reverence too. I feel like it takes a lot of courage and bravery to surf, which is why I need to do it! I did try it once when out in CA–it is definitely something that looks easy, but once you try it you realize it requires an incredible amount of strength–in so many ways.

  • You should try… surfing is an addiction that will change your life.
And…..maybe next time you shoot surfing in Rockaway, you can shoot a real surf brand with its HQ’s in rockaway… MI OLA.

We combine Fashion, Fit , Function and Fun. And we’ll keep you covered no matter the wipeout.

  • I recently went to visit my father’s home town, at the Southern part of our country, coasted by the Pacific Ocean, and the locals are good swimmers and there were a lot of surfers. I surely wanted to try it out, but I am so afraid of swimming in the ocean. Maybe some day.

My Jack Russell gets me (makes me) up in the morning to take him out. Then I draw for
a bit. It takes a while to wake up and I admire anyone who can exercise in the morning,
    especially surf!

I wish I could wake up and surf every morning.

  • Oh yes the Isar wave in Munich, it’s famous and one of a kind though you have to be skilled it can kill you, I have heard.

  • garance your ** note totally made me laugh out loud.

while i do get out of bed for yoga now, it’s taken me years of trying to do something, anything in the morning to get me up. only when it became a somewhat spiritual practice for me – done right beside my bed! – was i finally able to get up without talking myself out of it.

  • Your photos are always so perfectly done, Garance?

  • Nail on the head with this post! Surfing is the single most addictive, all-engrossing thing I’ve ever done. It’s also the thing that’s made me the happiest.

  • Beautiful pictures, but they give me an ache of longing in my heart, because I love surfing and the sea, but I just don’t manage to get out there very often. Oh, to live right by the waves!

  • Once a surfer the feel and join never vanish. The take on life follow me in everything I do. Sea and surf makes the best meditation nature can provide. Remember to hang loose now and again and enjoy the natural lifestyle – you don’t have to be a surfer to do so – but if you dress the attitude it will definately help you to understand true inner value.

  • Guillermin Anna August, 14 2014, 12:09 / Reply

  • Garance, your paddle is just the beginning! I’ve decided to learn to surf this (Australian) summer. I’m not a strong swimmer so I thought it was something I’d never do, but I’ve decided to conquer my fears!
