What I love about Paris at the end of June is that days are so long you have time to fit everything into them… And that the evening starts under a bright sun.

Speaking of Paris, and evening, and vintage dresses, I went to see Midnight in Paris yesterday and was quite disappointed… Have you seen it ?

  • I’ve not seen it yet, but if you were let down that doesn’t give me high hopes for the film. Ah well…

This woman’s dress is lovely, and pairing it with flats makes the look quite fresh.

  • omg.. I haven’t seen the movie yet but I read a lot of bad reviews about it, to be honest i’m waiting till it is online so i can download it
    love the lace dress :)

  • Moi j’ai adoré rencontrer Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Dali…

    j’adore <3

  • I haven’t seen it yet, but I find Woody Allen’s often disappointing, because they are never quite as brilliant as Manhattan and Annie Hall. I was having my hopes up for this one though!

  • Oui, vu Midnight in Paris…
    http://hulotte.wordpress.com/2011/05/30/minuit-a-paris-woody-allen/

  • J’adore son style so vintage!!, magnifique!!

  • Oh no!!
I read on other blogs and magazines that it was a nice movie and I really wanted to see it because what’s best of Allen+Paris? (aka my favorite director+my favorite city)

But if you say so… :(

Oh I’d like to know why you didn’t like it… Will you write a review for us? (LOL joking)

The picture is great as always… I was in Paris too yesterday after a long week in Italy… ahhh I know what you mean…

  • No I have not:) but your dress is amazing :). http://shu84.blogspot.com

  • i love the dress!!!who is she?

  • I saw Midnight in Paris over the weekend as well. I was also disappointed. I guess the point of the story is that we should live in the present and not idealize past eras . . . but the whole fantastical nature of the story irritated me. What did you not like about it?

    Gorgeous photograph, BTW.

    Bisxx :)

  • That dress, that hair cut and the long ring, I really like it.
Oh, how I wish I was in Paris!

  • I love the flats!

  • Ah! Michelle Jank! Tres chic:)

  • p.s… Love her petticoat poking out underneath!

  • superbe robe !

  • Midnight in Paris: Trop long pour rentrer dans la partie du scénario intéressante!

    Très jolie robe!

  • She looks absolutely adorable! Can hardly take my eyes off her :)

  • Oh, I loved Midnight in Paris. Maybe it’s because I am not from there, but wish I was, so I love everything to do with Paris!

  • Exquisite dress and charming styling!

I’m sorry to hear Midnight in Paris is disappointing, but not surprised. Woody Allen films often are. I haven’t seen it yet, but it has received good reviews here and I was looking forward to it. Too bad.

  • I thought the film was whimsical–he managed to poke fun at his own penchant for the past, while introducing belly-warming references and soiling his very own muse. Paris is Paris, but this was Paris through the eyes of an American–exactly what his characters played out in the film. These famed writers were all imports, feasting on the scene.

I’d suggest you all see it and decide for yourself, dig past the obvious. Garance, I’d love to hear your review.

  • Is that Michelle Jank??? Last time I saw her she had long blonde hair.
    She looks incredible!!

  • That black lace dress is beautiful! / Cette robe en dentelle noire est magnifique!

    http://www.gingerfashionmonsters.blogspot.com

  • SOOOO glad to hear that you didn’t like the movie either. My husband has a blog and wrote about our disappointment with it weeks ago – and no one agreed!!! In the US, they’re crazy about the movie. Anyway, feeling redeemed.
Love the dress, her shoes and your blog.

  • I’ve never been a Woody Allen fan so maybe that was my problem with the movie. I didn’t hate it but I wouldn’t rush out to see it again. Too many stars and not enough umpf!
Love the dress. Makes me want to be in Paris right now walking the streets.

  • Same feeling with the movie. I came not to expect too much from Woody Allen lately (unfortunately) but the reviews were some high for this one that I went hoping for something else. I was really disappointing as you said. Still trying to figure out what the people that were cheering afterwards saw in it. On another note, I saw Bill Cunningham NY this weekend. Wonderful to say the least!

  • Simply wonderful!
    Have a nice day!

  • yes. i saw midnight in paris. to be honest, the story line kind of sucked. it wasn’t very interesting. but i felt the cinematography and the photography within the film were pretty fantastic.
    xx, http://wordbyjessie.com/

    Bisous.

  • I just saw “Midnight in Paris” last night, and thought it was absolutely wonderful. Beautiful and inspiring and solid reminder about the value of living in the present.

I love combination of the long lace dress and ballet flats in this photograph (as well as the light and the expression on the woman’s face). I’m not always comfortable in heels, so I’m always looking for ways to make flat more chic.

  • I just saw Midnight in Paris a few days ago and really enjoyed it. I’m curious what you found disappointing about it.

  • she and her vintage dress are beautiful. I long for my own midnight in Paris this summer. The film has yet to be released in London, shall I wait for DVD?

    xx

  • Mmmh, no. I am not feeling this look. I find it too goth for a nice summer evening: too much texture, too much material, too heavy. I could easily replace it by one of the 20s/flapper frocks that La Cotillard so beautifully wears in “Midnight in Paris” — a true fantasy film.

  • I really enjoyed Midnight in Paris, but i think that’s because it so perfectly captures the way Americans view the city. It represented the fantasies of an expat, past and present. I can see how you wouldn’t like it though if you were taking it seriously. It is more of a romp through the American imagination than anything else.

  • how beautiful!!!

  • Unfortunately Midnight in Paris is not going to be released in Portugal, boo! I’ll have to wait for the DVD. I’m looking foward to seeing it because of the beautiful images of Paris, but plot wise it doesn’t look that good… Woody films are kind of hit and miss for me. Some are surprisingly wonderful (from his recent movies I loooved Vicky Christina Barcelona) and others are just meh.

Love the photo, I can’t believe people still dress to the nines like that! Very nice!

  • bonjour,
non je n’ai pas vu le film . Vous ne me le conseillez donc pas ?
    love

  • I cant offer comment on the film but omg the dress – i love it – and i love more the styling – the flat pumps and the more day bag – loooove it xx

  • the opening scenes were a valentine to Paris. I would have liked to seen more of
adrian Brody as Dali. The actress playing zelda looked too young.
Some of the acting was stilted. Owen Wilson was good when looking awed but his coloring and his mouth reminded me of a young , thin Donald Trump (ugg!

  • Lovely dress.

I was neither disappointed nor impressed–I was more surprised by the film because it wasn’t what I expected … it was a bit absurd, but that’s what I liked. Also, I like the message about being happy with the time you’re in and not longing for a time passed because you’ll miss what’s spectacular about the here and now. That’s my 2 cents!

  • In Madrid right now the sun doesn’t set until about 10 pm! It is crazy to me! Part of me loves it, part of me is totally confused by it!

    http://nomadic-d.blogspot.com/

  • lovely!
    but why black?

Question de culture générale (manque de)

  • Very beautiful dress. The lace is poetic but the black color makes it more rock n roll ! Check out : http://nothinlasts.blogspot.com/

  • i love your blog and your style!!!

    i follow you!

  • Gorgeous dress. Glad to see a petticoat. You often see vintage dresses of this style worn without one but the intended volume is lost and so is the drama. Someone else commented – its must’ve been incredibly hot in Madrid so its amazing to me that she looks cool and collected. I liked ‘Midnight in Paris’ but I also liked ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’.

  • I was also disappointed by the movie!
I felt the story was pretty lame and the movie had all the cliches Americans have about Paris – so maybe you actually have to be American to appreciate the humor (as a European living in the US I clearly don’t).

Bisous !

  • What a amazing dress! LOVE her style!

    Kate.

  • I loved the film , thank God Woody Allen is still working ! My 16 year old daughter loved it too .
And I also like your blog very much . Keep up the good work !

  • Gorgeous… Tres chic. Love the bag – is it vintage as well? Garrance, any idea who makes the bag? The ring adds a great modern twist.

  • I saw the film and was admittedly a little disappointed. I did however, enjoy the costumes from the 20’s! And I do feel like everyone has a decade they wished they were born into or at least could visit… I wonder if the beautiful girl in your photo wishes she were born in the 50’s???

    inherentstylela.blogspot.com/

  • She’s super cute, this fille parisienne – very committed to the look in a modern way.

I saw Midnight in Paris here in Paris, and I was disappointed too… In fact I’ve been mystified by all the people who say it was so fantastic. I left the theater feeling like a silly American. The film is full of cliche and lacks a resonant story line – no real depth and for the magic realism there was no real mystery! On the plus side, it makes Paris look like a jewel, et qui c’est vrai, bien sûr!

  • that’s a really pretty dress!!

    http://www.ohmydior.org/

  • Yes, I saw it on saturday – I thought it was quite cute allthough I have other Woody Allen movies I prefer over this one. But I like the idea of time-travelling ;) and Marion Cotillard was such a sweetheart in the movie

  • It is a beautiful dress and a fantasy-like photo. I wonder where she is going in that. It seems little heavy for summer.

  • Absolutely breathtakingly stunning. She is so amazing looking! I love love love this picture!

  • Yes, I saw the film. I was embarrassed. Gil: meet Man Ray and Luis Bunuel. Oh, nice to meet you. Like these guys wouldn’t have been total assholes to anyone they didn’t know. Same for “Paul” and “Edgar”. Also, who could walk like this Gil character and be accepted for anything other than a complete nordo (that’s basically someone who’s flying without a radio). When he puts his hands in his pockets it’s as if with each step he’s pulling his hip forward with his hand. Go ahead and try it. You’ll be walking like Charlie Chaplin or a twelve year old. In khakis. In Paris. And this’ll get you the girl, for sure. Because Parisian girls love nothing better than this kind of guy, especially if he’s a bit needy and lost as well.

Too bad, because I liked Vicky Cristina Barcelona quite a bit.

  • God, she look soo beautiful! It made me wish to have a event to wear this oufit!

  • dark romance of jane eyre

Bref Woody Allen vieilli..

  • How were you disappointed in Midnight in Paris?! That movie was hilarious and so on-point with the characterizations of Hemingway, Zelda, Scott, etc. Oh well, to each her own I guess! :)

  • This woman looks like she’s from the past!

    -Grace

    http://www.theafeminada.com

  • where did she find the dress? who does it? anyone knows? Garance please reply if you know! Thank you!

  • magnifique
    cette robe est sublime

  • je n’ai pas vu le film…mais j’aime bien cette robe!

  • You were disappointed with Wood Allen’s Midnight in Paris? I thought it was great. So light and delicate. I felt really good of watcing it. And the message, I think has been given. We’re always wanting to live in another time. We are never glat with what we have. And by the way I was surpresed with Owen Wilson’s performance. I quite adore it.I t was very Wood Allen.

  • I did see Midnight in Paris and I think I liked it for the reason that I miss Paris a great deal and unlike many other “American” directors, Woody Allen showed beautiful romantic Paris, so I fell in love with Paris one more time…and the movie was like a trip back to Paris for 1.5-2 hrs :) Why you didn’t like it?

  • Midnight in Paris is a sweet and innocent little fable. Suspend sophistication, suspend cynicism, and the movie works quite nicely.

  • Isn’t it a French thing to dish every and any movie? never admit that a film might have been enjoyable?? ‘not bad’ is high praise?

I think it’s the kind of movie that, if you have a great imagination, you will love it. If you’re not very imaginative — can’t suspend reality for a moment to consider the “what if?” in life, you probably will be disappointed and think it a waste.

I found Midnight in Paris to be very enjoyable, an imaginative fantasy, so clever in a never-underestimate-or-anticipate/never-quite-understand-where-he-gets-it-from, Woody sort of way. Really, what if one could spend a few hours in the company of Stein, Papa, Picasso, the Fitzgeralds? I’d step through time to do it!

I may see it again …

  • The out of focus echo of black iron lacework, so Parisian, adds much to this lovely photo. The flats seem to ground the look in today, avoiding a costumed feel with the vintage gown.

  • I like her hair. Very chic.

  • I loved the movie so much I saw it twice in one week! Perhaps it is because we Americans do have such a romantic idea of Paris, and why so many Americans moved there in the ’20’s.

  • She look very chic.

  • Paris looks so amazing under the sun at 10pm. There’s simply nothing better. Except, possibly, that lace dress.. its beautiful.

    ? Fox Whiskers

  • totally classic, love it so much especially the black dress

    http://www.monicafakhrizal.blogspot.com

  • I loved Midnight in Paris.

  • Amazing photo! Love just everything about it! And that girl is sooo beautiful! :)

  • oah Michelle Jank with dark dark hair!! She is a fabulous Australian stylist/designer/artist…is there such a thing? She is an inspiration, and this is an example of why…

  • Idem j’ai été très déçue…

  • Midnight in Paris was genius!!! It was romantic, a time travel to the magical times past…If I could I would spend the evenings with Gertrude Stein, the Fitzgeralds, Hemingway, Picasso, Josephine Baker, Matisse, Dali and Man Ray drinking, dancing and discussing existentialism until thee wee hours. But, alas, it’s just a movie.

Too bad.

  • I love how she matches the dress with those shoes~

  • Beautiful dress, but not very wearable! Anyway I like the look.

I´ve seen it, not a grat fim, not really funy or big claims, but kind and easy, just to entertain, I went out with a smile and “good taste”, maybe not to see again but…i ejoyed it, why did´t you liked it?

  • It’s like a sequence of clichés for Europeans. Love the dress with the flats, though!

  • Your picture is beautiful and I thought the movie was, as well. Some of the personalities of the characters in the “present day” portion of the film were meant to be annoying (and they certainly were;) however, the scenes played throughout the different eras were wonderful.

  • AMAZING. I LOVE your blog and am a follower… please take the time to check out our blog.. two girls from Melbourne, Australia :) xxxx
    HERE!

  • I concur, Midnight in Paris was disappointing. Too bad b/c there may have been potential in the premise, but bad acting and an underdeveloped script killed it.

The only redeeming qualities were Marion Cotillard and the shots of Paris, too bad….

  • C’est un rêve ¡

  • I saw midnight in Paris and I adoooored it. But maybe it’s cause I’m not a Parisian and have never been to Paris. But the dress is gorgeous and chic. Love it!

    bises.

  • I am completely obsessed with her dress- perfect, beautiful, and so simple. Love!

  • Midnight in Paris is one of my favorite movies of the year!

  • It’s one of my favourite movies too! Maybe it works b/c we dream of Paris and you actually live it.

  • What didn’t you understand about “Midnight in Paris?”

Faites confiance a notre Woody Allen !

  • love the dress and the hair! i did see midnight in paris and liked it a lot—amusing, lovely outfits, not too deep, but…..what’s not to like??
    esme

  • I saw it month ago and I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! why you didnt like???

  • Love Michelle – the ultimate style chameleon!
She worked on this year’s L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival and was amazing! Check out her style on the runway here http://www.lmff.com.au/lmff-tv/lmff-2011/lmff-2011-day-1.

  • belle photo !

  • Oh Garance ….. this image is a delight! Seeing shots like this one motivate me to take more time and better care of myself! I’m putting her on my board, so next time I’m designing my shoes I’ll ask myself would she wear them! – Annie from habbot.

  • Lovely, lovely, lovely dress. And the flats are so cute with it!

Why were you disappointed with Midnight in Paris? Personally, I adore it. I’ve seen it three times.
You have to be almost morbidly well versed in literature to like it, I suppose. It is sort of a bookish indulgence. I saw it with a friend who wasn’t as big of a Lost Generation Literature nerd as I and he just stared blankly the entire time.

But I love anything with Hemingway, so maybe I am not a good judge.
    Cxx

  • Michelle is a very talented designer originally from Perth, Australia. It’s lovely to see her featured on your website!! Tres chic.

  • The movie is very light, but still much better than most of the annoying movies shown in the American cinema nowadays.

  • Love the hair and dress and the fact that she paired it with flats (wish more American women would wear flats at night).

Just watched the trailer for the Paris movie. It always concerns me when even the jokes in the trailer were NOT funny nor amusing. I do want to see it those as I love Paris but will likely wait till it comes on tv so I can turn the channel ;-) Deme

  • I thought Midnight and Paris was funny, witty and reminiscent of Woody Allen’s best films.

  • What a beauitful dress!!

  • aaaamazing!

  • silence and grace,great!
