Glasses

11 years ago by

There are girls who wear them just for the look.
There are girls, like me, who need them when they use their computer. But sometimes we wear them just for the look when we haven’t slept a wink and have dark circles down to our neck.
(There are also those who would never put them on, even if they can’t see anything at all.)
And then there are some who wear them all the time.

Among them are some of the girls who inspire me the most in terms of style. Jenna, Valentina, Lucy

I’m always intrigued with people who always have glasses on… It totally changes their face. When they take them off, you can barely recognize them. The glasses become part of their face just as much as it becomes part of their personality. Yves Saint Laurent, Woody Allen… You can barely picture them without glasses on.

I wonder if I could ever become one of those girls who always wears glasses. It happened to my mother, so we’ll just see. Honestly though, the thought doesn’t bother me at all.

How do you wear your glasses?

——

This crazy storm got something good out of me: I am becoming addicted to Pinterest! And I just started a “People With Glasses” board… Come check it out… And follow me!

  • Love the frame!! Beautiful photo!! ….. http://www.retrobeans.com

  • I’ve been wearing the same classic ray-bans for years now, but I mostly only wear them at home, which I guess is a shame because they look just right on my face, giving it structure and a nice touch of deep wood/brown colour. Hmm you might have inspired me to change that Garance!

  • i have been wearing them since i was ten. i’m so ok with them i hardly ever considered contacts…:)

  • Like you… I wear them on the computer… but I do love glasses… especially these oversized, professor types… All retros for me… they are my favourites… Maybe I should wear them more often… especially when they cover up the bags and the dark circles… :) xv

  • I changed to lenses in now time. Somehow I couldn’t get used to the fact that when you wear glasses, you see everything through a frame. Everything is framed, and behind that frame so many details can get lost. I don’t want anything standing in the way between my sight and the world. It anoys the *** out of me…. Clear sight is so important.

  • I wear glasses all the time when at home, I can’t see anything without them. Outside – I wear contacts and glasses for the look with contacts sometimes :D

  • I’ve been wearing glasses ever since I remember. Then, when I was about 15, I switched for contact lenses but now when glasses came into the fashion I’ve started wearing them daily again. It’s much healthier, easier and stylish at the same time. In these days I am switching back to contact lenses only when it’s too sunny and I can wear sunglasses or when it’s rainy so my glasses are not fully covered in raindrops. And sometimes I am just way too lazy so put my lenses and make up on, so I go for glasses instead :D

  • I love glasses. I got my first ones when I was 11 and never had a problem with them (fashion-wise). However, last year I got laser eye surgery because my prescription was quite strong and I was never comfortable with contacts (sensitive eyes) and let’s face it, glasses aren’t always handy.. I’m so glad I got my surgery, however, my love affair with glasses continues! They rock. x

  • Love them! I have a round face, so people tell me that I pull off round glasses.. Maybe I’ll give it a try :)

  • I only take them off when I don’t want to see what’s going on…

  • I wear contacts most days, mostly because as a dancer I have to (if I want to be able to see), but on my days off I wear glasses and I love it! It gives my eyes a rest, plus I am kind of in love with my new oversized frames, I feel somehow cooler with glasses than without. What a change from when I was 12!

    http://nomadic-d.blogspot.com

  • The only real rule is: When the glasses are on, so is my red lipstick! (Dark hair, light skin, classic black frames, red lipstick. How else could it possibly be?)

  • This is a great rule v Helmut Newton! Xx

  • I used to dream about having glasses when I was little – I thought they were so cool! And then at 12years old…I actually needed them. And it was the end of the world. (this is a typical ‘straight hair/curly hair’ – grass is always greener phenomenon)

I wear contacts now – glasses just on days when my eyes are too tired for the lenses. But I did splash out on a new pair of frames last year. Should probably give them some face-time before they go out of style…

    OH petite allumette
    C’est dangereux d’être coquette
Au point de n’en faire qu’à sa tête
Quand ça peux vous coûtez les yeux

    Je me fout
    D’y voir flou

Enfin bon. :)

  • You are right, glasses change our face. I have to wear them always, otherwise I’d fall taking first two steps. But it’s a vulnerability, I wish I could open my eyes in the morning and see clearly every dust mote in the sunlight, or do boxing, or other sports. And contacts are not a way out. They just don’t work for some people. So, I’m ok with how I look, but it’s not ok that I don’t have a choice.
By the way, I wear glasses with thick black glossy frames. =)

  • I used to wear glasses. And now because of aging (*wink* aging starts at 30+), I don’t need them anymore. I still don’t have perfect vision but can see good enough. And I think I am prettier without them. Except sunglasses which give you instant chic, no doubt.

  • The Yoga Exercises for eyes really do work, all I need is lunettes, ray ban, and then I see my self perfectly!

  • J’adore.

Love Glasses. Some faces become so much more balanced and expressive with them.

Not just YSL, Woody, but also Hamish Bowles (who looks 100 times better with glasses), Kissinger, and in fact all the politicians from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Big black frames. So cool.

Do you know what make the ones in the photograph are? They look phantasmagosmic!

  • I had to get prescription glasses starting in the middle of my sophomore year in high school until they literally broke in half this year during my freshman year in college. So, of course I had to get almost the same frames (my last RayBan frames were obviously discontinued) because I dislike change, and also because the rectangular frames are the only ones that fit my face semi-perfectly. The only thing I don’t like about my glasses, okay so there might be several, is I have no prescription sunglasses so I have to put my lovely non-prescription sunglasses over my regular glasses while I’m driving or walking on the street (which to me looks slightly ridiculous). Oh, and the glare that they give off when I’m taking photos with my friends and family.

  • I’m one of these girls who wears her glasses all the time. I have 3 pairs (+ sunglasses) and like to change them ever so often. The only thing that I don’t like “glasses-wise” is that it’s so hard to find beautiful colored (ombre or mirror!) lenses with prescription for sunglasses. The regular brown or black or grey is so boring!

  • I’ve been wearing glasses since I was in the 7the grade. But it wasn’t until entering highschool that I started to wear them all the time! Glasses do become a part of you, for me they able me to see so it’s more than looks. Although, I always take them off in pictures so you rarely see me with them on in pictures.

    Have a great day!
    Cristi

  • I had to start wearing glasses when I was 10 years old (can’t see anything farther than 10 feet), I’m 25 now so it’s been 15 years. However, I never liked wearing them (I only wore them when I really needed to see), not until I got the perfect frames, by Tom Ford. Now I like wearing my glasses…but I still don’t feel completely comfortable taking pictures wearing them. But hey, it’s a progress…lol

  • I only wear my glasses at home and only when I take my contact lenses out (so, basically that’s 10 minutes before I go to bed and ten minutes after waking up – at most). The main reason for this is because they’re already eight years old and they are pink. I don’t know what was going on in my head that made me think I would want to wear pink glasses for years. Haha. I guess if I had a new pair, I would wear them more often. I would love a cat-eye shape (and already tried them on and think they look fab), but then again, who knows if I will want to wear them in some years’ time. If only glasses weren’t that expensive, I think I’d own a lot of them!

  • Hello Garance,

    Bises,
    C.

  • I love wearing glasses and wouldn’t ever consider using contact lenses. I mainly use mine for work or watching TV – they do totally change my face though – some people don’t recognise me!

  • i wear them all the time! i can’t imagine myself without my glasses! i look completely different without them:)

  • i wear them all the time, even though they scare people sometimes…
since i was really young i needed them, but i didnt liked them…
so i started looking for funny or interesting ones, and colors…
so now they become a part of my outfit and im always changing them.

  • I’ve needed glasses since I was 11 and have been wearing contacts since I was 12…and my vision has just been getting increasingly worse! I hated wearing glasses until finally I got some Ray-Ban wayfarers and now I love wearing them! They give me character and I just feel a lot more confident!

giveaway ends tomorrow! check it out!

    http://lavieenliz.com

  • I have to wear them always, because if I don´t do it, a lot of rare thing happens to me ( the worse, an “incident” with a traffic signal while I was walking…ha…ha….poor nose of mine!!). But, apart from a real necessity, I consider them as perfect fashion accesories…

  • I made the decision to being a “glasses girl” at 22 years old. Now for 10 years I have been a full time glasses girl and they have become part of my face, my style and character! I also like to reinvent myself with a new pair of frames every year. It’s so fun! Please more pictures and inspiration for glasses girls!!

  • Thanks to (not wearing) my glasses, everyone thought I was a snooty know-it-all in middle school! Yeah I was a know-it-all, but NEVER snooty.
So, years and years of blaming glasses (and loving contacts) and then WHAAAT? All of a sudden they were cool again? I still can’t get over it. Finally found a pair that looks good on me, but I still think they’re so uncomfortable–hate being able to see the world around the edges (despite my big frames). Also, the “fish bowl effect”–where you move your head and the world sort of distorts with it too? yuck.

You’re right they ARE good for “covering” dark circles though. :) Shh, my secret.

    http://anothermagpie.tumblr.com

  • I don’t wear glasses everytime, only when I use computer.. I got kind of circle in metal, like Harry Potter glasses…

    P:S: I love Pinterest too!

  • I’ve been wearing the same huge, retro-ish, multihued glasses for over a year now (these but in pink http://herblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/dior-spring-2011-campaign-8.jpg); they sound crazy, but I get compliments on them literally ALL the time–more than anything else I own or have ever owned, which makes me feel sad for my stuff, but very happy for my face. Of course, I need to wear them to see anything, but I love them because they disguise the effects of late nights and all-nighters perfectly and they go with everything–sounds crazy, too, no?–white, grey, purple, burgundy, (certain shades of) green, royal blue, navy blue, black, most reds and pinks, and the colors they don’t go with never suited my complexion to begin with so color-coordination is never a problem. But now, it’s gotten to a point where I don’t think I could do without them–stylistically speaking–they’ve given me such confidence in myself and the face I put forward. Maybe that’s weird, but that’s my glasses story, Garance. Hope you liked it :)

& puis j’adore mes lunettes Paul & Joe,

  • Garance, I am always very pleased when you write about glasses (and even create a Pinterest page dedicated to them!!!) I design glasses and I LOVE them as an accessory, they really add character and personality so I am always telling people to play around with different looks and go for different shapes, colours and styles…I also write a blog on eyewear (this is how much I love the subject!) which you can check out here http://www.eyespectacle.com/2012/06/certain-parisian-grace_06.html for more Pinterest inspiration ;-)

    Enjoy!!

  • I used to be the girl who NEVER wore glasses even though I can’t see a thing without glasses or contacts. Recently, though, I got a really cute pair of Warby Parker glasses and I’ve been wearing them more. I like the way that they are sort of an accessory and the fact that they totally change the way I look when I wear them. Glasses can be fun, and while I don’t think that I could ever be one of those people who never takes off my glasses, I do enjoy wearing them occasionally.

  • I need glasses for driving and seeing distance, but I don’t wear them all the time, and I REFUSE to wear contacts (I can’t bear the thought of putting a small object INSIDE my eyelids!! Heaven forbid it were to go behind my eyeballs! x_x ).

Since I am a diehard fashion girl, I’ve always bought cute frames, so that when I do have to whip them out, the reaction is always “Oh wow! Great frames!” instead of “Oh, I didn’t know you wore glasses……”

This year, I bought large tortoise cat eye sunglasses from Garrett Leight that I turned into glasses. I love them!!!!

    http://www.streetlook.fr

  • I typically only wear my glasses when I need them. Now that I have prescription sunglasses, I wear those like it’s nobodies business. Except nobody knows they’re prescription so I don’t mind as much. I’m in the market for a funky pair that I’ll want to wear with certain outfits. Function meets fashion.

  • The girl in your photo is one who can wear the BIG styles & still look great. I wear mine for computer & reading in general, also “reading sunglasses” for when it’s really bright out but they look like cool aviator sunglasses. I’ve only found one pair of glasses that I think look good on me – SAD.

Funny, just started PINterest too & creating boards with my photos, recipes, wine suggestions, etc.

I never liked to think of myself as a ‘glasses wearer’. I never needed them until about ten yrs. ago. Then, I purchasd sassy looking ‘reader’ glasses for reading and drawing. Little by litte I needed them more and more. Like to see the small item codes at the supermarket checkout, or to see fine print. It got to be a hassle putting on and taking off glasses to read a menu in low light. I would have inexpensive glasses stashed everywhere: in my car, at the couch, by the phone, by the bedside. FINALLY, I just broke down and got a perscription – BIFOCALS!! to my horror. But…..I got over it. I’ve embraced the need to wear my glasses all the time – or only if I want to see. ha ha. The other day I realized I am a ‘glasses wearer’ when it was getting difficult to see in the shower and I realized I was wearing my glasses and they were getting fogged up!

  • Garance,

The girl in your photo looks great & can pull off wearing BIG glasses. I have yet to find a pair of reading glasses that I really love. I have a pair of aviator “reading” sunglasses that look amazing though.

I just started creating boards (but not too many of them) on PINterest. Food, Photography, Animals, makeup, Style INspiration (just added you). Maybe you can follow me too at

I have been wearing glassing since 1st or 2nd grade. I love all my awkward pictures with frames that were too big and perhaps the wrong color (think Becca from Life Goes On.) I have contacts and I use them, but I do feel most comfortable in my glasses. I just bought my first pair of Persol glasses. They were quite the investment, but worth it since I get compliments. Garance, I’m glad you are on Pinterest. I’ve started following you and can’t wait to see your trained eye at work.

  • This photo is stunning! I admire women that can throw on a pair of specs and look effortlessly chic. I’m definitely the girl who needs glasses but won’t wear them.

  • Mathilde November, 1 2012, 1:13 / Reply

  • I have always loved the way certain women look in glasses! I, of course have love/hate relationship since I’ve needed glasses and worn them from the beginning. I haven’t worn them regularly in years. Every time I try to wear them as part of my look, I always feel strange in them. Maybe I just need to find some great glasses with an awesome fit and then I’d be sold!

  • I have been wearing glasses since I was 10 and I LOVE them. I can’t wear contacts for more than a few hours, so many years ago I just decided to embrace glasses. My favourites are the sexy black-framed ones. They have been my staple for the past 15 or so years!

  • Oh glasses!! I am one of those people who can’t see anything without them. I mean I can see, but you definitely don’t want me to drive or try to cook without them. I have been wearing glasses since I was 10 years old, apparently I was not the luck one to be born with a perfect vision :( When I was younger, I hated glasses, now in my thirties, I treat them like accessories. I have my every day pair that I wear all the time, I have prescription sunglasses cause I LOVE SUNGLASSES but I couldn’t find perfect ones for a while, then I have my special pair that I wear on a night :) If I have to really really dress up, I go without any and then I can’t enjoy myself cause I want to make sure I don’t miss anyone or for anyone to think I ignored them simply because I can’t see them but they don’t know that! :)

Life with glasses is definitely interesting!

Has anyone had lasik eye surgery? If so, was it successful?

  • Mirta X. November, 1 2012, 1:49 / Reply

My glasses it’s only on me at home. I look like this guy Steve Urkel in the series. So you figure that out…. :))

    Bisous ! :)

  • to my opinion, choosing glasses is not that easy. I would buy a pair without trying them on. I know there is now technology online that you could try the glasses/sunglasses on virtually. But, that’s far not enough! The different curves and measurements of each glasses/sunglasses are mean for different types of face contour. For Asian, always try on a pair of glasses in person is a golden rule. I am an Asian myself and I know that low nasal bridge can get more annoyed when finding a right pair of glasses.

Another thing to pinpoint when choosing glasses/sunglasses, choose the right color that matches with your hair/complexion/color of your eyes. I would go for a tortoise rather than black if I had dark hair.

    My 2 cent :D

  • You always pick topics so relevant to everyone!

I wear glasses almost all the time because I haaaaate wearing contacts. (I will bite the bullet on contacts if I’m going out or dressing up.) I need new glasses so I’ve been looking for a bolder pair with more personality. After all, they’re on my face all the time and it’s what everyone sees me wearing! Maybe I can get some inspiration from your board :)

  • Sorry, but I don’t love glasses. I cried when the doctor prescribed them to me when I was little. Then I switched to contact lenses and felt much better. I think that even though they might look great on some people, they take away the face from the person. Of course, I am not saying they are not useful or important, they are, but I just much rather look at a person’s face.

  • Hi there,

Answering the question of lasik surgery…

I had it when I was 24 years old, and now, after almost 20 years (i am 39) I can say it was the best thing I could do. I see perfectly. I was one of those persons who did not like glasses at all and did not love contact lenses. I was extra careful in the recovery process. Dark rooms, stayed at home for 5 days, and other precautions. It was worth it. The doctor told us that I could go out and do everything after 2 days but I met a guy who did and then got an infection. Of course, my surgery at that time was not as popular as it is now. I would recommend taking it easy for a while after it.

  • I’m going to confess something now..God, I can’t believe I’m not doing this on my blog, like I always planned to but I’m such a laaaazy girl who always has different ideas for blog posts! Truth to be told, I’ve been wearing my glasses on a regular basis ever since I was 13. The problem is they have special lenses for PC protection and because of them everytime I take a photo with my glasses on my eyes look green and HORRIBLE. Therefore, there are no pictures on my blog with my glasses on and I don’t think there will ever be because I guess I could never accept the fact that one day I just didn’t see things properly. I really dislike my glasses, but I care about my health more( future doctor speaking haha) and that’s why I religiously wear them, even at parties although my friends tell me ‘I can’t see any of your makeup’ or ‘These glasses don’t match your outfit at all!’. Well, excuse me if I can’t afford a pair for every single outfit :))) You, on the other hand, Garance, look simply amazing with your glasses!

    Kisses, Mary

  • I need to wear either glasses or contacts all the time, since I was 13, and I allways wanted contacts, I started wearing contacts by 18 (I’m 23 now)… I’ve been thinking of doing the laser, so I dont need contacts, but I havent done it yet because the I wont have an excuse to buy cool glasses! on one hand, wearing glasses without needing them sounds so silly to me, but on another I gess I will allways own a cool pair of glasses even if I do the laser…

  • I am a girl who has to wear hers all the time! It wasn’t always that way though. I started wearing them part-time in high school, to see things at a distance. I thought that the story goes…”Your eyes will get better, if you wear your glasses!” Not so much, I have become depended on them to pretty much see at all, but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have it any other way! At times, I would like to be able to put them down, especially with certain wardrobe choices, but it’s true, they do become a part of your face. I feel weird, almost naked without them :)

  • haha honestly i wear them every single day except when i go out to party and meet friends…which is usually weekends. They’re so comfortable! but yes i’m also guilty of wearing them when my eyes are puffy and has major dark circles…glasses are so perfect for covering them up (or so i think)!

  • I wore them as a child. I wear them again recently. My mom told, that I look like a schoolgirl and like a teacher to my dad ;D My best friend accuses, that I needn’t worn them – they look so damn good – it’s couldn’t be truth I need them at all ;P
yeppp, I love my barton perreiras!!!

  • I just recently got glasses for when I have to focus on something for a long time and they put me in a good mood whenever they’re on. I usually wear BonLook’s Drink the Kool-Aid style in brown, but I also have a pair of black Ray-Bans.

  • What a gorgeous picture and what a gorgous glasses! They look so great on her! I am actually in desperate need for a pair, but it looks so awfull. Some people just have glasses-heads, but I really don’t. Look like a total geek!

(6ème photo – By Garance) – Merci.

  • i JUST found an amazing vintage eyeglass vendor at the market in greenwich…and have in my hands two, never used, vintage glasses, one as of 4 pm today, are now my reading glasses and they are so very original, so absolutely unconventional and sooo fun it is to now put a jewel on my nose, that says, ahh, I am unconventional and usual and have my very own special taste and glamourous way to peer into the newspaper or look at my laptop … !

When I was 8, I had 20/20 vision but loved the look of glasses, so I tried to fail my annual eye exam (I failed at failing, and the doctor realized right away what I was doing). My 20/20 vision is no more, but I still love the look of glasses and happily wear them. I love the variety they can add to an outfit. My absolute favorite pair I have right now are a retro looking pair I got at Arteo on Rue Oberkampf in Paris. The are my favorite partly because they somehow go with everything, and partly because the staff at Arteo was so sweet and helpful to me when I was shopping there – even though I was struggling with my French, and was struggling to justify the cost of buying glasses abroad in Euros. In the end they have been worth every penny because I love the look of them every time I glimpse them in a window I’m passing by. I certainly can’t say that about everything I’ve ever bought!

  • hi garance! i’m one of those girls who HAS to wear always glasses, because of my miopia. sometimes i would love to see better, just for wearing them like an accessory even if for me is more a necessity. but i like to use them! it makes my face more interesting! love you G.!

Though I’ve been wearing glasses since I was in grade 5, I really only embraced them 4 years ago when I got my first pair of chunky vintage frames and stopped wearing contacts altogether. It was a revelation! Since then, they’ve become so much a part of my identity that when I think about getting laser eye surgery, the thought of being w/o my glasses holds me back. I think I’ll keep them for a while. : )

I get my glasses from Warby Parker now – super stylish for a great price. They have a cool business model too. http://www.warbyparker.com/

  • I have a lovely retro pair that are essential for movie-watching, telly-viewing, night-driving and rainy night-driving…so pretty much whenever I want to see! I had contacts for a while but they made my eyes super dry. Yuck.

  • I’m moderately near-sighted. I’ve had periods when I wore glasses all the time, but about two years ago I stopped (except for my prescription sunglasses – I can’t live without those). But recently I decided to start wearing them again – not to cover up my dark circles – that’s impossible, but the two vertical lines between my brows. I think they look cool. However, I realized that now they prevent me from reading. But I draw the line at bifocals!

    http://thebeastinthejungle.blogspot.com/

  • I love my glasses! Even though I have contacts, I find that at the ripe age of 46, when my eyes are changing, I prefer the comfort, style and character that glasses give me. Except for when I’m partaking in my Capoeira or dance classes, I can always be seen in my Warby Parker Huxleys, on which I receive many compliments. Adding a vibrant lipstick completes the look and seals the deal.

  • I’m slowly going blind as I age-a real drag- and look forward to the day when surgery can repair farsightedness! I have to wear glasses all the time and feel like I look like Mr. Magoo cause my lenses are so thick and make my eyes HUGE. My daughters say I look like Emma Thompsons character in Harry Potter! Oh Well- ya gotta laugh :-)

  • G! Great post about the glasses. You are a great authority on the matter because you always have cool ones. Me? Well, I have a love/hate relationship with my glasses. I loved them when I wore them out of coquetterie. Now that I should wear them all the time (because I’ve turned blind as a bat), I don’t love them so much. I have prescription Ray-Bans. Strangers react to me differently. If I have them on, people seem more attentive to me. Is it my imagination? Perhaps I could fall in love with my geeky-chic glasses.

    http://veryfrenchie.blogspot.com/

  • The first pair of glasses I wore full time were l.a. Eyeworks sunglasses I had my clear prescription lenses put in. They had black high gloss horn-rimmed tops with thick arms and metal bottoms. This was just over 20 years ago and it was not the fashion at all, but I wanted something fun and individual. I became “that girl with the funky glasses” and I cannot imagine not wearing chunky plastic glasses. I always have a few pairs in rotation and I consider them just as important as shoes or any other accessories. Anne et Valentin is my favourite glasses designers.

  • I’ve been wearing glasses since high school. I always consider contacts but I love the character that glasses have. My eyes are good enough that on special occasions or when I feel like mixing it up, I’ll leave my glasses off. But, overall, I love wearing my glasses each day. Though I must say, I can’t do these big glasses. When I put them on I just see my parents in their ridiculous glasses back in the 80s. I just can’t love that look on me. I’m always impressed by how some people can make these chunky glasses look classy.

    http://lindseyreneegrace.com/

  • I’ve been wearing glasses since primary school. I love glasses, they’re just a part of me. I feel naked if I don’t wear them. They protect me from people. Only once or twice a year, I would go out without them… because it’s nice once in a while do show that I can actually put on make-up properly (fake eyelashes and eyewear just don’t work together). I’ve been asked if I would consider surgery and the answer is: hell no. I love my glasses :)

  • I always always wear them! Ever since I was nine, I’ve had them and now I’m BAT BLIND without them!
The only time I haven’t for them for a period of time longer than an hour is when they were snatched off my face by a monkey in India, no less.

  • Like so many hear I needed glasses young, like 12 years old. I hated glasses and what’s more my little brother wore Ray Bans without the glasses because he thought glasses were “cool.” I mean the torture! Little brothers, yuck.

Anyway I learned to love glasses and have too many pairs to mention and always want more. I rarely wear my contacts at all now.

I foresee an increase in frames sales thanks to you Garance!

  • Garance, I wear glasses ALL the time. They are awesome rectangular, tortoiseshell frames that highlight my cheekbones wonderfully. I only take them off and put on contacts (and dress up) when it’s a special occasion. I look different and people cannot recognise me. My boyfriend says I am better than Clark Kent/Superman because I look different with and without glasses – a real disguise! :)

I am happy to see that you are safe and well Garance. I wear glasses and contacts. My glasses are so thick, I cannot wear all the time. In the past Because they are so thick I don’t feel very attractive with them always. But now I like to wear them and feel good with all these great styles

  • I am extremely happy with my new pair of frames that I wear not only because I need them but also as something of a fashion item. There are definitely those days where I just don’t feel like putting in contacts, but I also plan a fair number of outfits that I typically wear only with my glasses.
But, the real purpose of my comment here is to put in a request. One of my favorite features that you do is the “career girl” interview, where you highlight a particular woman’s job and how her own sense of fashion relates to or influences that job. While I love hearing about these really interesting career trajectories in fashion, it would be really cool to hear from a woman who works outside of fashion, but finds ways to balance a personal love of fashion with her career. For me, I’m a student who is planning to go into policy work and then a PhD program in economics. But I also read your blog and Scott’s, and love fashion, dressing up, shopping and learning about the world of fashion. It would be amazing and inspiring for me personally to hear from a woman who has a similar set of interests or goals.

  • Ah Garance, it is time to thank you. The revolutionary 180 degree change in my relationship with glasses stems from your post about Anna and her glasses range back in 2009. I loved the look of the range and on a whim ordered a pair online. It totally changed my perspective – not only did they bring character without making me look like someone else, I looked effortlessly chic. I realised that it wasn’t that glasses didn’t suit me, I had just worn the wrong ones for years!
Personally, now I think that glasses are the most important accessory to choose well if you are an all glasses kind’ve girl (sorry shoes!). Everyone looks at your face right? My personal secret is to choose a subtle colour like nude or off white – it brings attention to the eyes without screaming “GLASSES!!”. It works really well for girls like me whose faces are not super feminine and in fact need a little softening instead.

  • Garance, I am so LUCKY that at my age (41) I don’t need glasses yet, however, I have been thinking what type of frame I will use when I need to start wearing glasses…and I know I will go for a similar dark colored pair than she is wearing. Roundish or cat eye shape is the most flattering style for me and it should be for anyone with square or heart shape face like mine. I don’t know if they will become a permanent feature in my face, I think I will wear them only when I need them as you do.

  • I have been wearing glasses since I was 8! I love the pair I have now by Derome Brenner and they have definitely become a part of my face B-)

  • She looks great wuth glasses!!!

I am one of the people who would never wear them!! i has laser surgery a few month ago and am loving life without glasses!!!

  • I am really, really myopically ( is this the right word ?) So as a child i had to wear (thick) glasses all the time. I guess I’m kind of traumatized and only wear contact lenses.
Somehow I just don’t really have a face that looks good with glasses. Probably I just still have to find the right ones for me with all those really pretty new / retro modells…

  • I have to wear glasses all the time. That’s why it is so important to choose the good ones…tomorrow I’m going to pick some new :)

Regarding Pinterest…Oh, yes, it’s fabulous to archive the very good and inspiring stuff we find around the web!

  • As I have to wear glasses only to see far away, I take advantage of this situation by only wearing them when I really need them and when I want to them to complement my look. I love rimmed glasses, so I take light colored ones (light grey) for my everyday life and dark brown ones when I go out or have something special. I think they give an extra edge to my outfits. But I only wear lasses when I need them or else I will create the habit of needing them all the time.

    Take care.

  • I have 3 different glasses, each quirky in their own way. One vintage tortoise shell, one bright red modern and the third is really very sleek & almost transparent. I use each one as per my outfit or my mood. People think I am weird to do that. But I think glasses are as much of an accessory as a pair of shoes! Maybe one day i’ll be collector of glasses.. :)

Haha.

    See you,

Donc perte de vue = good thing ;)

  • I love glasses! They can change a look in an instant. I think of them as part of a layering look. xxx

    xx

  • I love people with glasses, I think some can look really interesting, but i hate wearing glasses myself. I only wear them when i drive as otherwise i would crash. But i am well known for not saying hello to a good friend as i couldn’t recognise her, the glasses would have helped. mxx

  • Caroline November, 2 2012, 8:04 / Reply

  • I’m also a big fan of glasses although I don’t wear them/don’t need them. I just think they can make every face look interesting and different. You look amazing with your glasses! :)

    xxxx

  • I was just on another blog (B. Jones style) and saw a photo of white cat-eye glasses. I don’t wear my glasses often, and I already have three pairs to choose from when I do, but those white cat-eye frames may need to become option #4…The post is here: http://www.bjonesstyle.com/blog/2012/11/02/leslietesslercapes/

  • I was watching Working Girl last night and couldn’t stop myself thinking how Melanie Griffith looked badass in these glasses here – http://www.theerudite.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Working-Girl-to-Use1.jpg. I want these glasses!

  • Christine November, 2 2012, 11:20 / Reply

I totally need glasses for computer and reading and especially when i’m writing long texts and do excel sheets, but now i have a new pair (the nerdy type from Ray Ban) and i’m loving the look they give me. I think that they make me look cool no matter if i have a high bun and working out clothes or a 9 to 5 outfit. And they look great when paired with a leather jacket and scarf or a shirt, skirt and knee high boots.
But i definitely wouldn’t wear them for a cocktail or an elegant event. Lucky for me, I’m not as blind as a bat, otherwise for those situations I would need contact lenses

  • I wear them loud and proud!

I have horrible vision and had to start wearing them in 2nd grade. For awhile I would always pick frames that blended in my face. It was the theory of “wearing glasses, but not wearing glasses”.

As I’ve gotten older and realized that I will never look like the girl next door or a classic beauty in American standards, I’ve decided to embrace it and make glasses an accessory for my face.

I have 4 pairs in rotation now. 3 of them are from my favorite glasses designer, Theo (http://theo.be) and 1 pair by anne et valentin (http://www.anneetvalentin.com/).

I loooovvve glasses shopping! I look forward to buying a new pair every year :D

  • I love glasses and I absolutely love this photo!

  • Jennifer November, 2 2012, 1:31 / Reply

  • I have worn glasses everyday for the past 5 years. I like mine classic and black and as naughty librarian in vibe and shape as I can get. It just makes things more fun ;)

    Merci beaucoup :)

    Laura

  • I looooooooooooooove my glasses and I wear them all the time, my wedding included. Sometimes I even wear when I jump into the shower!! I wear them since I was 5 years old and I think I look prettier and smarter with them ;-) I like them big (partly because I like to hide behind them…) and yes, sometime people don’t recognize me without them. When I was a kid I used to be mocked because of my nerdy glasses and my high grades, but both things turned out to be something to be proud of!

  • I am one of those people who have to wear glasses all the time. I tried contact lenses but I felt awkward with my face bare. I still do get mad at my “fatal fate” sometimes, because I know life without glasses would be easier… Sometimes glasses are the reason I feel really ugly… But then I remeber that the best thing I can do about wearing glasses is to make it a positive quality and wear it with style and pride ;) (my great inspiration was Iris Apfel). So now I have 5 pairs of glasses, all very noticeable (why hide, people would see that I’m wearing glasses anyway). I wish all the girls who have to wear glasses to be proud of it and feel confident.

Sorry for my bad english, I tried to do my best ;)

  • Garance what brand are those glasses that the girl is wearing in the photo!?
    I LOVE them!
    I must know….

  • I wear my glasses on my nose :) from am to pm because I can’t see anything without them.

  • I ve been wearing glasses since I was 6. Not the cute kind, but the really thick, ugly ones. Got contacts at 15 and haven’t looked back. I still have glasses to wear at home, but I wouldn’t be caught dead in them: still thick as hell. So when I loose a contact I don’t leave home if I can help it. Sorry, but glasses are not fun for me, unfortunately. And the worst part is I can’t have my eyes lasered… So I have a pet peeve with glasses.

  • Misses Robinson November, 3 2012, 4:33 / Reply

I must wear glasses to see. They are now a big part of my look. I own about 6 different pair. I am consistently complimented on my choices, which I love because I wish I could wear contacts! They really do become a part of your face and affect my clothing and jewelry, sometimes even my shoe choices. That’s one reason I have so many pair. Another is they are always on my face, so it’s nice to change things up. When I was a teenager I used to do the fakes to bring down my sexy a bit, now I would kill to be that sexy!

  • I have been wearing glasses all day everyday since I was 4 years old! (I’m now 30). I don’t even recognize myself without them.. however I can’t really see without them either. I always have mascara marks on my mirror because I have to get super super close to see my lashes clearly. Glasses have never bothered me, I rather like them. The only thing that used to bug me was that I could never find classic frames that went with many outfits… (and when you have a super serious prescription it’s hard to switch up glasses often, even if they are the same prescription for some reason it’s hard to adjust). But then I found the greatest plain black thick frames by Chanel and all was solved!
The only other thing i’ll say is that it’s hard to wear earrings with glasses. I always feel like I’m over-accesorized! If you have any photos of women in glasses wearing fabulous earrings I’d love to see them!

  • I love Anouk’s glasses. It would suit my face but who is the designer? I wear glasses all the time (purple rectangular ones) and would like a change.

  • Stephanie November, 4 2012, 8:44 / Reply

So happy about this post. For decades I have worn glasses every day. One of the best things for me when traveling in Europe is that men find women with glasses attractive! Here in the states–forgettabout it. Invisible. Or relegated to geek chic. Ugh. Oh, it felt so good to put this in writing :-) 48 and a committed four-eye fashionista.

  • Cette photo est superbe!

  • I wore glasses and contact lenses from age 13-35 and then had corrective eye surgery! So liberating….the only glasses I now need are dark glasses!

  • Glasses are a great way to accessorize your face :) I wish I can be one of those people with their signature, iconic eyewear, but I usually take them on and off throughout the day (I’m only -1.50 in both eyes. Sometimes I can’t recognize people until they are 30 inches away from me…so maybe I should wear them all day! :)

It’s just that sometimes I don’t like having something on my face.

But I agree with Stephanie, sometimes it’s extremely attractive when a woman (or a man) wears glasses.

Anyways, I am so so excited to wear my new pair of Chanel spectacles, here is the story behind them :) ps – I reference you Garance! :)

  • hey G!

I rock a pair of red frames. Yes red! From LA Eyeworks. My boyfriend actually encouraged me to get the glasses and own them! He also go a pair of red frames and it is fun to wear them around LA. I also have another pair of vintage light green frames.

I would wear these red frames around my dental school. Doctors and students knew me as the girl with the red frames. It was nice because when I wanted to hide on a day, I would change my frames to the green frames. I love, love, love glasses and how they can change your mood and outfit.

OWN your frames. OWN your style

    Love,
    Kat

  • Has glasses and hard contacts since age 12. NOW… No glasses…totally free lazer operation took care of the near and far site issues! So happy. But you should see my collection of SUNGLASSES! WOW

  • I’m one of those always wearing, since i was 7 years old…not much choise.
I have red ones like 5 years ago, i love them because always looks great withe everything, but i can’t use full red clothes, like red dresses because it’s too much hahaha
but definitely its cool for some

  • you just need to find your perfect one and then its fine for you!i was so happy to find mine from jil sander! they do not dominate my style: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1583629354739&set=a.1410293461450.2058486.1355903195&type=3&theater

  • I hate glasses. Just can’t find any to suit me. I wear contacts all the time and if I didn’t wear contacts I’d have to wear glasses all the time because I’m terribly short sighted. When I hear people who tell me “oh I’m so blind” and then I find out they are only slightly short sighted it makes me so annoyed. Also people who want to wear fake glasses when their eyesight is perfect. Please be happy that you have great eyesight. Just wear different sunglasses!!

  • I’ve been short sighted for about 8 years now (since early adolescence years) and at first I wore glasses only when I really had to, in school when I needed to see what’s on board..but I took them off the second I could. Hell no, I’d wear them out of class, on the hallway. Then finally I got lenses, so putting glasses on and off about million times a day wouldn’t bother me any more..I’d have them on only at home if my eyes were too tired.
Few years ago I changed the optician and she represented me to Alain Mikli’s frames..one of best buys ever:) It’s only too bad that now I want new frames every few months..yet I want to keep all my old ones, so when it comes to change of diopter, imagine the expenses..:) and with each new frames I go for a crazier shape or colour, something I haven’t seen before. Plus the optician is among the few ones who sell Mikli in my small homeland (Slovenia) and she’s always happy to let me know that ”those frames are the first ones to be sold in whole country” :) Needless to say, now I put the lenses in only on special occasions or in the summer, when wearing sunglasses (on wish list: Miklis, of course). So yeah, glasses are my signature piece and favorite accessory.
My boyfriend and sister (same story about switching glasses for lenses and back to glasses) also wear Miklis (no ordinary ones cause I was there when they were picking them up and obviously cheering for those most noticeable:)) and we get sooo many compliments when wandering around together:)

BTW, while I don’t comment often (ever?) – love your posts, videos, photos, illustrations, tweets, Pinterest boards..love you;) you’re great, really stand out among other bloggers.. Keep up the good work!!

P.S. Sorry for all the advertising. I’d love to try other brands too, but the selection in our country is just so narrow..

  • I’ve worn glasses since I was a child, and I don’t feel quite comfortable without them on now. I wear big black frames which I love the shape of, but the silver Bs on the side (Balenciaga) are just a touch too conspicuous for my preference. I totally know what you mean about glasses becoming part of someone’s look, a visual identity. Anyway, I’m not sure I could get rid of my specs even if I wanted to–I can’t stand the thought of sticking a contact lens on my eye!

  • Amazing! You are looking so cute. These glasses are looking just perfect in you. Thank you for sharing this amazing article with us. I really like these glasses. I got some amazing sunglasses from Eyewear and they are of very good quality and mesmerized.
