It’s difficult to make big changes sometimes.
Whether it’s the way you take care of yourself, the way you work, the way you interact with others… Or whether it’s an editorial line :)
Whenever we try new things, our attraction to the new and unknown pushes us forward, but at the same time, fear and old habits can slow us down. If you want to move too fast, or if you’re looking for instant excellence, you end up making mistakes.
I’ve always liked change – but I approach it as a type of evolution. One thing leads to another. You calm down. You follow your gut, make changes little by little and, most of all, you shouldn’t believe you’ll be able to do everything perfectly.
That’s why at the Studio, we try out lots of different things.
Like the new topics we’ve been sharing with you – on mothers, on braids, or on fitness fanatics. We hadn’t ever written about subjects like that before, but those were all things we talked about together all the time, so we wanted to take them further.
Of course, I could have stopped at the personal articles and streetstyle photos that made this blog what it was when it started, but as I’ve changed over time and travelled around the world, I’ve realized that style is something that reaches into every aspect of life – which I talked to you about here.
And, in my opinion, my blog should represent that way of seeing the world — otherwise it’s just a totally empty formula.
To evolve, you have to try going on new adventures…
Like my book, which took up so much of my energy – but I’ll be able to show you the cover very soon (We finally have the release date! It will be coming out on October 27 in the US!!!)…
My stationery, which is very successful and makes me want to do even better…
Or our shop, Garance Doré Goods, which we launched a year ago at the same time as the stationary line. It’s our little baby – it’s growing slowly, without us having to force it. We try things out, we refine it, and money isn’t our main goal (but rather creative collaboration), we decide what seems right to us, and soon we will be launching a really great micro collection that I illustrated for Equipment!
And mess up sometimes…
Or not mess up, exactly, but decide that a project we launched isn’t as great as we had thought it would be. For example, we recently decided to take a break from our newsletter. We thought it was cool, but too traditional, boring, and repetitive.
And, if there’s one thing I hate more than anything, it’s filling up space for no reason. So newsletter out. I was waiting for a new idea (as I’ve already mentioned, working on my book left me totally drained creatively) (but the book is reaaaaally cool!) and I think today it happened – an idea came to me while I was eating my sandwich at the Studio. I can’t wait to send it to all our subscribers. (You can subscribe here, if you want).
It just goes to show that sometimes it’s better to take a step back and wait for things to come to you naturally.
Even so, there are aspects of the old newsletter that I loved, especially meeting our readers. We had breakfasts in Paris, meet-ups at the Studio in New York, and lots of other really cool things. We’re going to have to find a way to keep opening our doors. We’ll see, we’ll figure something out!
Oh and while we’re on the subject of hiatuses, people keep asking me when Pardon My French will come back. We’re working on a new version for that, too – and really, any ideas you have are welcome!
But also remember who you are and be yourself…
That’s why we love nothing more than talking to you about friends we’ve had for a very long time, whether it’s Caroline, Viviana, or Lolita – but we also love to introduce you to new people who inspire us. It’s healthy, it’s true, it’s beautiful. A great person stays a great person, even when they evolve, so what’s more interesting than continuing to see how someone we love changes over the years?
This month, for example, we’ll be talking to you about a new book by Amanda Brooks, who I’ve photographed on the blog many times and is a really inspiring person to me, whether she’s the fashion director at Barney’s or lives on a farm in England (that has been her crazy life trajectory and we’ll talk about that with her).
That’s also why I keep my diary posts alive, telling you about my life, from the most profound to the most superficial details about once a week.
There’s also our idea of style, of course, that has never changed, whether it’s our streetstyle photos, or the series we work on with Brie and Erik – it’s that mix of expensive with inexpensive, vintage, and most of all – the idea that style can’t be bought, it has to be cultivated.
So for the month of June, I wish you lots of evolution and success, and also mistakes, as long as you stay true to yourself. It’s not always easy, but it gives you lots of stories to tell!!!

Je comprends tout à fait ce besoin d’aller petit à petit et de stopper les choses quand celle-ci ne correspondent pas à nos attentes. ;)
Il vaut mieux marquer une pause quitte à recommencer depuis le début, et prendre le temps de remettre les choses à plat.

Just an idea I wanted to drop in: I really like the glimpses of your studio life (people working on the couch, setting up photo shoots etc.). I would love to see an episode of Pardon My French that would show us more of this. Maybe you could use your temporary move to LA as an excuse? I’d be so happy to see that!

Garance, your editorial letters are always like a breath of fresh air to me! I love your words so so much: always so honest, inspiring and genuine. What you did with this blog and with the Studio is pretty incredible, and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for all of you!
What really works is that at the core of everything is you Garance! You are super talented, thoughtful, kind, stylish and have a sense of humor. So no matter what you do we are all interested in taking a look and seeing what it is about. We trust you and if we like it, we love it. If not we move along and wait for the next offering. I’ve loved the evolution of the blog and in fact, your whole brand. I think it has been very organic and natural (but kale-free – don’t want to make you sound like a juice cleanse!) What I would like to see a bit more of on the blog is diversity, so many of your subjects seems to be very cool 20-30-somethings which makes sense, given the average age in the Studio. But you’ve got some AARP card-carrying loyal followers (some with scruffy, noisy yet adorable dogs) who’d like to see more representation. After all, the 40+ set — and 40+++ set— often have some of the coolest style, created from life experience as to what works and interesting personal additions that become style signatures. Just saying’!

I love these columns you are writing. I still love the style and the fashion but the reason I return to your site is for these musings. It feels like we’re all growing up together and have similar feelings and experiences and these of course can be shared at any age. I also like that the people you talk to are all ages. Finally, it’s ok to be stylish at 40, 50, 90 whatever. More of all ages and more musings please!

Ah!Le changement!Tout un programme.Cela fait un moment que je lit ton blog et je t’ai vu évoluer progressivement dans le bon sens.Difficile de rester authentique quand votre vie vous éloigne du quotidien des gens. Pourtant tu réussi l’exploit d’être proche et inspirante malgré tout.Félicitation pour ton blog qui m’a permis d’apprivoiser un peu la mode!
Je suis aussi dans une période de grand changement dans ma vie et je suis d’accord avec toi.Il faut aller lentement, ne pas se précipiter et fuir la perfection ou la performance immédiate.C’est essentiel mais difficile dans une société ou tout nous pousse à aller toujours plus vite.
Concernant les idées, pourquoi ne pas faire participer activement les autres membres du studio dans tes vidéo, ils pourraient tenir de petites rubriques.

I don’t find it boring , you have an unique point of view, thats why everyone loves what you do. Embrace change and stay true to your roots. How is that for paradox?

Toujours très intéressantes ces “editor’s letter”. Moi qui suit le blog depuis des lustres (c’était encore l’époque Paris) je trouve que tu as réussi à évoluer vers quelques choses qui te correspond très bien, tout semble une évidence, une ligne continue.
Pour des idées de “Pardon my French” j’aimerais beaucoup pouvoir suivre l’équipe du studio, un peu une journée “type”, voir comment vous travaillez, comme le studio s’organise etc..

Perso J’aimais bien la newsletter. Mais au niveau du blog, je préférais l’ancienne Garance par rapport au contenu mix Garance & Co. Je suis triste de ne plus lire exclusivement tes articles, que j’attendais avec impatience. Maintenant je survole la plus part des articles et pour dire, la dernière fois que je suis venue sur ton blog c’était il y a un mois. Il y a quelque années j’y allais tous les jours juste pour voir si il y avait du nouveau. Et je pense que je nuis suis pas la seule… Il n’y a qu’a comparer le nombre de commentaire que tu recevais avant… Avant ton blog était unique… Maintenant il est devenu comme tous ces magazines dont on souhaitais s’évader en venant chez toi… A quand le retour de Garance Doré?
