No but I love this outfit.

I’ve really had a thing for midi skirts lately but I have to warn you : they’re not easy.

I have three of them. Two whites and one blue. I wear them with little sweaters and high heels. It’s beautiful, very feminine. For winter, with high heeled boots it’s awesome, sexy, 70’s.

But of course you know me – the idea I love the most is to wear it with flats, like on the photo. It’s so elegant and gives a cool attitude, plus it’s comfortable, so you can really wear it in your everyday life.

BUT after trying a few times, once with ballet flats (too granny goes to the market) with sneakers (too Dover Street Market intellectual for me) and with brogues like on Alana in the photo (okay, so beautiful, but for me? Not so sure), I’m not 100% sure it works.

Still, I think a midi skirt is a great staple to have in our winter wardrobe. In white, so cool. And with a huge cardi like in the photo, love.

Do you like midi skirts? Have you tried wearing them? How do you do it?

  • I love midi skirt because they make me feel comfortable with a feminine attitude!

  • I love midi skirt and i lovet her jacket!!!!

  • I love this image and what makes it very modern is mostly the Top ,I think that the same silhouette standing..want be so great .the midi skirt and the masculine shoes +socks this is really fashion show things that works only on very very tall girl size 36-38 on the real woman in the real life it will look mamie-(grand mother in french)
The midi skirts will look best with boots!!!
i agree with you that ballerinas are not so great ,sneakers can do although it’s not great..
i think it’s going to be another thing most of us will buy but will wear it maybe once….

I am scared this look with shorten me, unless it’s with high heels and even then I worry about looking wider. I like my hips but don’t always want them to be the center of attention. I love the white and the big cardi of this look. Closest I’ve gotten is a longer pencil skirt with a small “v” like slit in the side, done both with heels and flats.

  • this looks great in the picture, but I agree Garance, in real life I would struggle to wear this. I think a midi with flats needs to show a bit more on top, otherwise the look is frumpy, unless of course you are a very tall super model! I have a midi length dress and it’s loose fitting, but is has subtle cut outs on the sides so I think it works with flat shoes…

    Hello Garance !

  • As a 66-year-old grandmother, I feel OK embracing the dreaded granny look! I have a great body, elegant style, and a beautiful 35-year-old Perry Ellis midi that I’m taking out of the back of the closet right now to wear with ballerinas.

  • Love them, but they don’t work on someone with athletic or short legs. They cut me off at the wrong spot and it looks terrible.

  • Yess, I wear them very often. Pleated with brogues, full skirts with pumps or flats, pencil skirts with heels, printed with boots. Love <3

  • Not sure about the midi length. Unless it’s on someone very tall and with heels. I’m way too short for the midi personally. But if someone can get away with it and rock it then I say why not.

  • I’m a big fan of midi skirts since I love how feminen they are. I actually also have a midi skirt but have not worn it once since I was unsure about how to style it. But I like your way of wearing it with some high heeled boots and some tights in autmn and winter, so I will try that out. I think I’m not quite brave enough to wear a midi skirt with flat shoes as well since wearing them with heels is already a challenge for me!

I LOVE midi’s. I’m 5’4″ and wear mine with a short fitted jacket and a knee height lace-up flat boot. The trick is to choose fabrics that are a solid color or very small mono plaid or dot, no big print. Keep the visual line close to the body, smooth and clean. Happy and comfortable.

  • I absolutely loooove midi skirts! If only I could find the right one in stores…

  • L'épingle October, 23 2014, 11:19 / Reply

    À vélo !

  • I’m short, so the only way it works for me is by pairing a midi skirt with delicate high heels. I bought one this fall, and I love it, but it’s not a very versatile piece in my wardrobe.

  • I feel ya Garance. I have also quite a collection of midis. Used to wear them with pointy flats and my hair in a ponytail. Very chic. But now fashion has shifted more into a grungy look and I feel a little out of place in midst of all the young hipsters. I tried the brogue thing but together with a midi … don’t the feet look damn big in them?

  • OOOh Love so much The Row !
    This look are wonderful !
    congrats & kisses

  • LOVE IT! I wear everything with brogues.

  • eastvillagesiren October, 23 2014, 11:57 / Reply

I just saw a similar skirt (cut and color) at & Other Stories, which just opened in NYC. Also comes in black. I bought three other black skirts instead but I think I will go back and exchange for the midi in white and wear with cropped sweaters and a pair of mid-heel, knee length boots. For me the trick will be a cropped top, otherwise I will look like a plump dumpling ; )

Love midis! Wore them all summer with different coloured Birkenstocks and a cute top. Are birks still in or are people sick of them? Not giving them up! Black birks for winter with socks!

  • So elegant. For me, the pointy toe on a heel or a flat is best for a midi skirt. A rounded toe or a sneaker isn’t right.

  • Oh Garance, it is all a matter of patience and practice. When I was in my early 20s I used to love how feminine and elegent women look in skirts. And me – jeans 24/7. And whenever I would put a skirt on, I just did not feel like myself. Plus everybody would start commenting how dressed up I am, which really annoyed me. Then I made a plan – skirt at least once a week! Then after some time it was three times a week… Now a few years later I rearly wear jeans, pants sometimes, and my closet is full of most beautiful skirts. And everyone now comments how strange I look when I put jeans on :) And I feel oh so lovely.

P.s. Midi skirts and flats combo remind me of Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. It is the most devine combination. Give it a second chance.

  • The same problem as you… i have one skirt I’m willing to buy but still figuring the shoes that goes with… No idea, but was thinking bout those:

  • I love the neutrality. I believe the midi skirt length is not so much for cold weather but for spring/summer. the skirt whooshes wind around and keeps you cool. some fashion is form + function. I prefer a flat sandal, even flip flops. highlight the ankle w a midi, and you cannot go wrong!

  • I’m a teacher, so midi skirts are wardrobe go-to. Anything shorter and your high school students stop paying attention to Chaucer. For shoes, I do like a gladiator, but since that’s not school appropriate, I often go converse.

  • I have always wanted to try midi skirts, but I have always been afraid of looking too “granny” as you say in the post! I will definitely have to try them out though. The one in the photo is lovely.

  • I think the best compromise would be to wear a midi with boots, flat or heeled, laced or zipped, or pull-on, even motorcycle and cowboy boots, all with the option of several different boot lengths.

  • I would like to have one in cream (that delicious hue of English clotted cream…) but I’m petite so anything that goes that far beyond my knees tends to swamp me. ..sigh. ..what a great skirt

  • The wider a midi skirt is, the more difficult I find it to style it, the only thing I really like is high heeled sandals, a pencil midi is fine, can be worn with almost everything. When you are twenty, it is much easier, otherwise, you have to be careful. Love the Dover Street Market intellectual, haha.

  • Midis are best and I have lived through minis and midis. The absolute best thing to wear with them are knee-high boots. After that, the shoe must have a bit of weight to balance the length of skirt. Not ballet flats, for example. The best shoes are 70s style. A bit of a clunky heel, but not so much heel as to be unable to walk, and a pretty good vamp. Oh, that I were a shoe designer as I can rarely find the perfect shoe!

Low boots are very fashionable now, but I think only look good with shorter skirts.

  • i hate hiding my legs and i’ve tried the midi. i love the elegance of it but it’s just not me though i keep imagining the vintage ones i’ve bought with ankle boots. it’s about the shoe as we know! now, give me a mini some great leggings or tights and an ankle boot and i can rock!!!

  • My new obsession is the midi skirt in both A-line and pencil cuts and a higher waist! I feel very refined, feminine, and even sexy in them. I must say I like them with heels the best when I wear them, but adore the flat on ladies with longer legs. (I’m too petite to carry it off and look like a child that raided my mother’s closet!) Another way I know that the look is a winner is when my husband’s face lights up when he sees me wearing them! <3

  • anything on Alana looks amazing no matther short ot midi or long or … the ugliest

  • Garance,

You always hit the nail on th head, talking about something that people don’t talk about, like this one. How would a non model gal pull off a midi skirt without wearing heels?

Regardless of height, it probably has to do with where the hem line hits and how slim the calves and ankles are. Those with slim ankles and calves, lucky you, because you can wear midi/culotte with sneakers and oxfords (ballerina is not a good fit, unless one looks like Audrey Hepburn).

I think for shorties like myself, the trick is to have the line as close to the hips/thigh and only flares out below the knee (but not too much). A streamlined A line will do, too. The oxfords with block heels would be OK if the top/jacket has some bulk to it (to echo the footwear).

Like you said, it’s a tough one to pull of. It looks so effortless on editorials and models but in real life, not so much.

Which is always the struggle for everyday women who are aspired by editorials and new satorial choices on the horizon.

  • Those are oh so tricky to wear. I have a beautiful gold, pleated lame midi skirt that is a beautiful vintage find and I just don’t have a clue what to do with it. I don’t wanted to look too fancy. Does anybody have any good ideas of how to style it? Maybe a T-shirt and red Supergas? Maybe a big cozy navy sweater but then what on my feet? Help! Thank you

I love wearing midi skirts! If I don’t wear them with heels I wear them with very ladylike pointed flats. I am 5’9″, though, so I’m sure that helps.
