What I love about Montauk is that the beach culture is totally different than anything I’ve known before, the Mediterranean or even California…
What I love the most is to go out early in the morning. The days in Montauk often start in a light fog, which gives a pretty magical, soft atmosphere. You can grab a café at the beach truck and go sit on the beach, do a few stretches or watch the surfers walk towards the sea and disappear in the mist. They arrive there very, very early as it’s supposed to be the best time for waves.
You stay for a while, meet people that are also there in a sort of daydream. That’s where I met Ipek, who’s the designer of a brand of swimsuits and beachwear, Kiini. After talking a little bit, we decided to have a barbecue together (us and our friends) that same evening.
Ahhh, I’m gonna miss summer !

I’ve never been to Montauk but it seems like such a dream. So many of my friends go out there in the summer. I just read a post on Eye Swoon, which is really tempting me to journey out there. I mean I live in Manhattan how come I’ve never bitten the bullet and gone there.
Maybe next summer.

There are many beaches in California that have a quaint atmosphere like Montauk such as the Central coast, Malibu, and La Jolla in San Diego. We have tons of options here! :)

C’est ça qui est génial aux US : on fait connaissance avec quelqu’un, et on n’hésite pas à prendre un verre ou faire un BBQ dans la foulée. Un truc impossible en France. Tu imagines : tu discutes sur la plage avec quelqu’un que tu rencontres pour la 1ère fois et la personne te propose de se retrouver le soir-même pour faire des grillades. On la prend aussitôt pour quelqu’un en détresse psychologique, qui n’a pas d’amis ou de famille et sollicite le ou la premier/ère venu/e pour passer sa soirée et tromper sa solitude. Je parierais que la majorité des Françaises et Français à qui quelqu’un ferait une telle proposition se méfieraient d’une telle personne. C’est tout juste déjà si les gens se risquent à dire bonjour ou même à sourire aux inconnus qu’ils croisent sur le chemin de la plage.

Le décor me fait beaucoup penser au style de certaines plages françaises de la côte atlantique.
La plage le matin… J’adore ! Le sable est encore immaculé, les lieux ne sont pas encore assaillis de baigneurs. On rentre chez soi pour le déjeuner et ensuite, on a toute la journée devant soi. Ca donne une énergie incroyable.
Mornings in Montauk is so spectacular! I stayed at Montauk Yacht Club this year and the balcony facing the sunrise makes everything feel so good!

Attention! Don’t base all of California on the southern part. I lived in Corsica for some time (just like you!) and much like Porto Vecchio vs. Bastia, there is a big difference in the north and south of California! I’m proud of the beaches in Northern California, just I’m sure you feel the same way about those in your village. I think they are the quite magical and quite different then those you might have seen near Los Angeles, and I don’t think you should lump them all together!

What a great way to start the day!
Meeting someone new and deciding to have a barbecue together, that just sounds so nice! I’m wondering how important looks/outfits are in ‘talking to strangers’. When I saw the picture, I instantly thought that Ipek looked like a ‘Garance-girl’. She matches the type of girl you often feature on your blog. Perhaps her clothes, or the way she carries herself, made you want to talk to her? Or am I way off?

I always associate that kind of beach culture to Meg Ryan films, romantic commedies… I don’t know why.. Strange, I know. Anyway, I love that kind of different beachy atmosphere. Here in the North of Germany the beach is also really different from what I knew. But I really like it.
I envy your social skills. I live in Germany for more than two years and I find really difficult making new friend. Imagine if I find it difficult that I still don’t have any German friends! Pathetic, I know. Prff…
