There have always been celebrities in the front rows at runway shows. It’s easy to understand why when you see the swarm of photographers around them as they make their way in. Then there are photos, and so then there’s press coverage, and so then there is free publicity for everyone to see.
Fashion week is also a chance to add some edge to your public image. Like Lea Michele pictured here – I saw her at the Alexander Wang show.
Il y a toujours eu des célébrités aux premiers rangs des défilés, et c’est facile de comprendre pourquoi quand on voit la nuée de photographes qui les entourent au moment où ils font leur entrée. Ça fait des photos, donc de la presse, donc de la pub pour tout le monde.
La fashion week c’est aussi un moment génial pour ajouter une touche “edgy” a une image grand public. Comme par exemple Lea Michele en photo ci-dessus, que j’ai croisée au défilé Alexander Wang.
That said, it’s true that a lot of designers refuse to invite celebrities so their shows become less like a media circus.
I know a few people, though, who found a solution.
Victoria Beckham and the Olsen twins are right there in the front row, it just happened to be for their own collections. And what’s most fascinating is that their brands are really respected. Victoria Beckham and The Row were two of the most attended shows during New York fashion week.
If you would’ve told me that 10 years ago, I would’ve never believed you.
What’s funny is that in both cases, the designers/celebrities are seated right there to present their collection. With no hypocrisy to be found, they aren’t there to inspect every last detail before each model heads out, but rather as inspiration and hostesses.
And who knows? Maybe one day, Lea Michele will launch her own collection.
And maybe you’ll want to wear it.

J’en connais quelques-unes qui ont trouvé la solution.
Victoria Beckham et les soeurs Olsen sont assises en front row. Mais de leur propre collection. Et le plus fascinant, c’est que leurs marques sont hyper respectées. Victoria Beckham et The Row font aujourd’hui partie des défilés les plus attendus de la fashion week New Yorkaise.
On m’aurait dit ça il y a 10 ans, je ne l’aurais pas cru.
Ce qui est drôle, c’est que dans les deux cas, les designers-célébrités sont assis en front row pour présenter leur collection. Aucune hypocrisie, elles ne sont pas créatrices à vérifier les derniers détails avant chaque passage mais des inspiratrices et des hôtesses.
Qui sait, peut-être un jour Lea Michele lancera sa collection.
Et que vous aurez envie de la porter.

I do not have a clue on who is Lea, but she is amazing, very beautiful. and in this picture she is so natural and funny. I love her!
as for all the fuss around, I agree that in recent times there is often more focus on which celebrity attended that show instead of keeping the focus on the clothes/designer. Times are changing.

I love Lea Michele! I saw her a few years ago on broadway (Spring Awakening) before she got on Glee – she was stunning back then, and she’s incredibly talented. I hope she does Broadway again :)
I love this photo of Lea Michele, it really captures her true personality. And I agree with the designers not inviting to many celebrities but some celebrities are truly interested in fashion so I do think they should be invited to come as fan – not a celebrity.

Darling photo of Lea. I walked into the Marc Jacobs show behind Demi and Ashton years ago and was actually frightened by the wall of blinding flashbulbs — and those lens weren’t even pointed at me, so I can’t imagine how much worse it must be for the celebrity. Granted, it comes with the territory, but it would be nice to shift the focus back to what’s shown on the runway versus who’s seen on either side of it!

Garance, I don’t usually comment on your posts, but on this occasion I wanted to applaud you for exercising qualities I seldom see online: thoughtfulness and eloquence. When I first saw the photograph of Lea Michele, my reaction was quite cynical: ‘great, yet another picture of a famous person. We have enough of those already!’ But to my relief and delight, you have accompanied this photo – which is very cute and candid, by the way – with insightful commentary about the role and perception of celebrities.
I can imagine a lesser blogger would have hastily posted this picture, perhaps with a few words: ‘look, my darlings! I had a *moment* with the gorgeous Lea Michele! Hee!’ But once again, you have defied the stereotypical image of the narcissistic fashion blogger with your perceptiveness and class. Combined with your knack for illustration and taking delicious photos, it is this perceptiveness and thoughtfulness that I find truly compelling.
Keep doing what you do!

I absolutely LOVE The Row, and am constantly impressed with how gorgeous and sophisticated Victoria Beckham’s collections are. Just goes to show you that sometimes we can be influenced by reverse prejudice, thinking these famous people can’t possibly be talented or have great taste just because they are celebrities.

oui, c’est vrai qu’avoir des célébrités sur son premier rang, ça redore le blason d’une marque. Et inversement, j’imagine que quand on est invités au front row s’un défilé, ça fait du bien à l’ego aussi !!! (j’aimerais tellement que ça m’arrive !!!)
