I’m in New York. It’s raining. It’s freezing. And it’s with a wistful smile that I remember back to those three days of suffocating heat in Palm Springs. Even though when the trip first started, it was… Well I would say just ok.

Ah yes. Because the first day, I had no friends around.

No seriously, I’m not kidding, no friends. I was invited at the last minute so I didn’t send a single e-mail, no phone calls, nothing. I had no idea who was going to be around and Sivtone and Nathan, the friends who were joining me, wouldn’t arrive until the day after.

And if there’s something that should be done with friends or not at all, it’s for sure a festival. Can you imagine dancing alone to the Strokes? Having a glass of champagne at the bar, all alone, and toasting with yourself? How dumb is that?

But hey, an invitation like the one I got, you just don’t refuse. Well and then sometimes, being alone is the best way to make friends.

…And to make some wonderful strategic errors. And get some good life lessons. So yeah, I’m talking Coachella lessons.
There are quite a few Coachella lessons. Some of them don’t need much explanation, and others ended up being real chapters in my life there. Here are the lessons we’re talking about:

Coachella Lesson #1: Without a car, you’re nothing.
Coachella Lesson #2: Without sunscreen, you’re nothing. (No further explanation needed)
Coachella Lesson #3: Without a Multi VIP pass, you’re nothing.
Coachella Lesson #4: Without denim cut-offs, you’re nothing. (No further explanation needed)
Coachella Lesson #5: Without friends, you’re nothing.
Coachella Lesson #6: The thing about Coachella is that it’s not so much about the music (We’ll see if this requires further explanation.)

And we’ll start at the beginning.
Coachella Lesson #1: If you don’t have a car, you’re nothing…

I didn’t have a car.

The first day, I was on it like a champ. And what exactly does being on it like a champ mean for our little Garance, listless and lost in the middle of the desert? (Okay, so I’m exaggerating a little bit, yeah yeah, I was in one of the coolest hotels in Palm Springs where Freja was swimming in the pool right off my balcony. Well, I can say the hotel was right smack dab in the middle of the desert!)(Okay, in the middle of Palm Springs which is an oasis in the middle of a dessert, yeah yeah yeah, okay already.)

FYI : Palm Springs is 40 minutes away by car from Coachella. It’s the closest city to sleep in if you’re not pitching a tent.

So what’s being on it like a champ entail?

It’s sneaking on over to the first person who looks nice enough, asking them right away, You have a car? Are you going to Coachella this afternoon? And then before they have the time to think about it, taking his silence for a yes. Then actually stick to them until the person is ready to go.

So this one first person ended up being… well… 10 or so people in actuality all smiling and joking around, and are all more well known under the Ed Banger label.
And that’s how I set off, with the Ed Banger crew, who were there to go play at the Villa Lacoste, three cars all with VIP parking spots. Not bad for my first time passing through the Coachella gate.

As they were all hilarious and adorable, I was pretty much to the point where I was sure they were going to be my bestest friends and that life would be as lovely as a VIP parking spot, and that we’d make a record together setting off the new wave of French Touch, when bam, right at the entrance to the festival, I hear :

“You Don’t Have Access”

[To see the next part of this story, skip ahead to chapter two, Coachella Lesson #3 : Without a Super Mega VIP pass, you’re nothing, and see how just as I made my new besties for life, I lost them, and how it’s not at all their fault.]

Getting back was a little more complicated. And of course, I knew tons of people at the actual Festival, seeing as Coachella is pretty much mini New York. After seeing a few too many concerts and dancing on the Eurodanse without realizing I was missing the concert of my life three stages over [and this is when I first came to see Coachella Lesson #6, The thing about Coachella is that it’s not so much about the music.], I found some friends to head back with.

These new friends were far less smiling and joking around than the Ed Banger crew, oh but of course : They didn’t have VIP parking.
And with no VIP parking, that means you’re sharing spots with 100,000 other people. So it took us 3 hours to get out of there. We left the concert at midnight and got back to the hotel around 4 a.m.

So totally zonked awake and tired out of my mind ready to go, I woke up at 6 a.m., jetlag in full effect, with one single idea in mind :

Uhhhh, actually I can’t think of anything at all. I’m as brainless as a koala (?). I think this is what I did :

I had some coffee (I think this took an hour and a half. Maybe I fell asleep into my cup)
Attempted to give myself a pedicure (Three hours of my life on 10 little toes, AND I messed it up anyway)
Decided to do some yoga (About 3 minutes before I decided it was too hot)
And then finally, took a shower (Which turned out to be a bath. I know. I should’ve just gone straight to the pool. But you understand… Freja was down there)

And then suddenly it was 2PM, and it was time for the Mulberry pool party at the Parker Hotel. I decided to take a cab.

A cab.

AHAHAHAHAHAH.

Wait, I’ll say it again:

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.

A cab.

There’s not a cab to be found during Coachella. They’re all reserved. That or you can wait three hours and even then who knows if they’ll actually come.

So after crying for a while (on the inside, of course. Every drop of water is precious in these desert conditions), I decided that I was entirely too alone and desperate to try hitchiking and that I just needed to just let luck have its way and went out to the front of the hotel.

And luck answered the call, in the form of Vi, who’s in the picture above, jumping in the sky. She had the face of an angel, had left from LA in a taxi and stopped to ask directions to the Ace Hotel. I told her, “Okay, we’ll make a deal. I’ll tell you how to get there if you leave me off at the Parker.” She started cracking up and opened the door. Ha, and she told me that she was on her way to go meet Ed Banger’s crew and there I say : leave the door open to luck and destiny want to step inside. Right?

Yes. After that, my friends Sivtone and Nathan just HAD to arrive in their Ford Mustang, and not only would I finally have my friends nearby, real ones I could do a toast with, but on top of that, we could go wherever we wanted in our convertable and I no longer had to suffer in a carless heeeeeeeeeeell!

So I just realized that my post is now longer than 1000 words (Yep, we are joining the industrial age here at Garance Doré Studio. We’ve even got word counters!) and that’s as long as a post is allowed to be, especially a post where I’m talking out of my ass. Agreed?

But before I finish, I have to say that Sivtone and Nathan arrived a lot later because destiny (by that I mean, the crazy Coachella traffic jams) had decided I needed to spend a couple days without them and before I started crying my eyes out (on the inside of course), Alexa Chung asked me to tag along to the Phillip Lim pool party, and while waiting I met up with Rumi et Colin (I just love them) and they took me around in their super cool SUV and we had a better time together than anything I could’ve ever planned on.

And then Sivtone and Nathan finally arrived (Yeeeeeah!!!), it was six in the afternoon, and they went off to get their passes, and that took them exactly 4 hours (Boooo!) because Without a Super Mega VIP pass, you’re nothing. So around 10 PM, we were reunited.

Get this, they were so tired after their hellish day, they just wanted to go to sleep.

And that’s how I missed out on Arcade Fire, my favorite band and bam, Lesson #6 rears its ugly head once more.

And so now, I’ll let you get back to your life. If my Coachella lessons didn’t make your head spin too much, I’ll be back in season 2 with new lessons much shorter than this season’s. Promise.

Can I give you a little tip? My pass was yellow. Booooo.

  • Hello Garance,
juste : “tu n’ES rien” (je suis, tu es, il est)
    ;-)

  • Sooooo goood hahha, hell of an experience :D

    I suffered with you !

  • Dear Garance,
Merci!

  • But you took some amazing photos while there. That’s what counts in the eyes of a photographer.

  • Love Love Love.

    J’adore !!
    Bravo !!!!

  • even if your post was 3000 words long it wouldn’t matter, but it cause it would be 300o words full of pure amusement

PS : mon éditeur serait ravi de t’éditer !

  • oh my gosh – that sounds awful (and makes me feel a little better as i was neither able to go to coachella, nor to one of the VVVIP parties or parking places :D )

  • No, just one thing Garance, seriously: you went through all this and you missed the Arcade Fire?????

    Are you crazy????

LOL but in the end I understand you a little: even the idea of being left there without friends, and especially without car, after all of that, must have been terrible. Even for Arcade Fire.

Oh and I’d have many things to say on your post but I won’t, because my comment would become long the double of your actual post and that would be just boring, not like your post that was one of the most entertaining things I’ve read lately on the internet.

So yeah, let’s say just two things:

    1. I don’t like Coachella EXACTLY because it’s not all about the music and it’s really really too VIP. A little bit is fine but like this it gets the fun out of the whole thing

    2. I love your long posts, they’re the best. Trash word-counter at the Garance Doré Studio, you don’t need it

  • Just brilliant! And I totally agree that luck, or what I like to think of as happy accidents, often makes for a better time than you might ever imagine if you’d carefully planned each minute.

  • You are too funny… I’m so glad you had fun at Coachella despite a few bumps in the road. I feel that’s just how music festivals are sometimes, no?

  • Oh Garance, you are too funny!

I thoroughly enjoy reading your stories.

  • It’s not just Coachella.
Driving a car is an essential part of American culture! Once you get behind the driver’s wheel on a winding highway in the West, you’ll be hooked for life. :-)
If you already have your French driver’s license, getting a NY one should be easy. Most states let EU citizens residing in the US to get a license just by taking the written exam and driving exam.
One morning of your time, max.
    Good luck!

  • Oh garance !

Rien
    ;-)

  • Now, that’s what I call complaining on a high level. But …. funny still :o)

  • Great Post! I loved reading the rules and even more I would have loved to go to Coachella. And know I know how I need to behave there and what I have to take with me. So for my next festival I’m prepared!

  • Fly on down to jazzfest this weekend in New Orleans! Better Than Ezra is opening up for Arcade Fire on Friday! You would have the time of your life. I promise you would eat the best food because well who can pass up crawfish bread and amazing music? You could get right up on the stage. Because at jazzfest VIP is something but not everything. And not to mention this but Ms. Lauryn Hill is playing on Sat. (Who knew she can only be called Ms. Lauryn Hill now!) But here too having a car is everything! You should have seen the line for taxi’s after Jason Mraz and Bon Jovi finished playing last weekend. Pretty sure those people were out there for hours! We had some guys from Chicago offer to pay us 1000 just to bring them to Downtown NOLA.
BTW I would read your post if they were a novel every day because you make me laugh.

  • ENCORE ENCORE ENCORE!!! J’adore. Et ça me donne terriblement envie d’aller à Coachella.

  • Garance, no friends? pffff! I don’t believe it!

J’adore ! :-)

Bisous et Carrément géniale cette PHOTO ! Yeah !

  • This is why I love you! Even as fabulous as you are, you are not immune to the awkward occurrences of life! And better yet, you have absolutely no problems sharing them! You had me cracking up!

  • You say what we all feel–wish we could be friends, happy to read your blog, 1000 words be damned:)

  • Great post! Keep on writing!
One remark: it is interesting how the meaning, boundary of the term “friend” is loosening.

  • Garance – fantastique as always! 1000 words of pure entertainment – and a valuable reminder to leave things up to luck sometimes…

    @nn

  • Fun fun fun !!!! J’attends de lire la suite !!

  • I’m already exhausting about the Coachella “adventure”…because that it’s in my opinion.
You are extraordinary how to explain with the best humor and details about this “music festival” that in my opinion the music is at the bottom all of these…o no?
Love your blog, your pictures and the illustrations!
    Kisses

  • i love your long posts, they’re hilarious!

  • This is wonderful insight and hilarious. A cab in Coachella? Welcome to California! I will read this again when I go to Coachella! Love

  • I saw you at Robyn! But was too shy to say hello. Enjoyed the story :)

  • We have been to Coachella for the last four years and always had a blast (this is year was the best so far). To us, Coachella is all about the music. Where else are you going to see Arcade Fire, Strokes, Cut Copy, Chemical brothers, Kanye and so many more – all in one glorious sunny weekend….not only is it good fun, it is efficient :)

    Love your blog!

  • ohh thats so sad that you think the festival is all about VIP passes and not about the music… thats why its almost not worth going to anymore. people treat it like a fashion show/celebrity watching event/pool party and they dont really care about the line up. very sad to hear that your one of those people..

  • give me pits and bod like that and I’ll willingly do this pose! haha <3

  • excellent! excellent! j’adôôOOrrre, tu racontes trop bien ,on vit ton épopée avec toi :D
    miam miam encooore!!

  • I generally love reading your posts, they’re always so funny and tongue-in-cheek. But this one… not so much. Exaggeration makes a good story but you seem to be willfully tricking your readers into believing that a) Palm Springs is aeons from Coachella, Indio (it’s not, it’s actually a 10-15 minute drive in normal traffic, b) you need a tricked out VIP pass to have fun (no, you don’t, because all 75,000 “regular” people who attended seemed to have an awesome time, and c) At Coachella, music takes a backseat to schmoozing and displaying oneself (whaa?)

Either that, or you are woefully deluded/this is a lapse in judgment (I fervently hope the latter).

  • Well, Coachella used to be about the music. But that was a long time ago.
Then the trendy “celebrity” types caught on… funny how they are always a few years behind!
So glad I stopped going before all the VIP bull…

Still, your post cracked me up and I adore this blog of yours…

  • Hi Garance,

I saw u on 5th Ave yesterday and we were checking each other out. ^-^what a small world!

  • gahahaha!!!!honestly, garance, this is the funniest post ever!!!please, please, please write some more about those ugly coachella lessons!and don’t feel inclined to shorten it!

  • This is one of the best posts ever! At Coachella (at least if you are serious about the music), you have to camp – that saves a lot of time in getting there, parking etc. The point of going to a Rock festival is not to live a life of luxury, is it? Having said that, what can you expect of a festival whose name whose name sounds like Coachella or a number of STD.

  • Very funny story.

Being guests of Sir Paul was the ultimate Coachella experience. You have your own shaded backstage area with food and drink all day plus transportation . We called it quits after that, nobody can top that.

  • This is a very interesting experience ( although feeling lonely is not) and this post is too. It’s my pleasure to read it (although it is a bit long really). You need not shorten your next lessons as long as you think they are what you wanna say!

  • Your Blog is Great!

    big bisous

  • I have to agree with Al and Elle- the reason Coachella isn’t good anymore is precisely because of all the fashion and Hollywood types who only care about the outfits and the status. Some people never even leave the VIP tent. I wish they could all stay locked up there so the festival would be more enjoyable to the ordinary-looking, middle-class, non-special, people who go for the music.

  • awwwwweee. the photo looks so cute! carefree! love it! :)

  • Never mind, I love your long posts! They’re always fun, smart, super-explanatory and of course very interesting.

    Kisses.

  • wow t’avais pris un taxi?! MDR! mais toi, t’es très styleé… so I’m sure you pulled it off and still looked good

  • Garance- I love this!!! How do you make every situation, no matter how grim (not that your Coachella experience was grim, but clearly you wouldn’t want to replicate it if otherwise avoidable), seem quirky and cute and yourself even more lovable? I keep trying to figure out how my writing would sound, given the same experience, and I can just tell it would be nowhere near as winning.

No wonder we all love you so (a.k.a. you’ve got friends everywhere)
    xx,
    Ali
