There was so much to see at the ballet, so we decided to split it across two posts. Here is our second one!!!
In the afternoon, dancers meet for on-stage rehearsals – a full run of that evening’s shows. They stop and start to the signal of the dance masters, who oversee every tiny arch of the foot. That’s it – just one final rehearsal before the show.
Backstage is calm – the dancers quietly take their final stretches. Most of them do their own makeup. The principals are sewn into their costumes (to be cut out of after the performance). A final coating of rosin powder to reduce slippage is added to pointe shoes. This night they perform Serenade, Agon, and Symphony in C.
And when the curtain rises, you’re transported by a brief encounter with beautiful athleticism…
Have you ever felt that at the ballet, too?
Beautiful photos!

fantastic images! the angles, the cropping, the light….. speak so much for themselves…absolutely stunning, inspiring and intimate at the same time…
Seeing these images are such joy. I saw the Balanchine show last Saturday, and it captivated me maybe more than any other ballet performance I’ve seen. Your images backstage, in rehearsals, for the performance are beautifully done and bring those incredible dancers intimately close. Thank you.
so elegant!

Those are some fabulous photos! Thank you, thank you!
(Oh, and thanks for showing us how that eyeliner beneath the eye works out when the rest of the makeup is in place!)
Gorgeous photos! I love ballet, classical and modern dance, bodies moving to music with grace, beauty and, hopefully, a lot of soul! I’ve seen a lot, and never get tired. The esthetics of classical ballet have been exploited by many artists through the times, but still moves me deeply every time I see it, or through the eyes of a new photographer, such as yours.. . Truly beautiful!
beautiful photography
What a lovely and insightful piece! I hope do one on dressage next, the same beauty and grace, another world of divine images ;)
Refreshing! Thanks, thanks, thanks……….
I cannot even express how much I love these two posts (+ the photos are just incredibly amazing). Moreover, I am right now in a very ballet phase myself: I’m 28 and for the first time in my life I gathered the courage to start adult ballet classes … and I loving them so much! The classes are great energy boosters and all the beauty and style around than I have never seen in other dance / yoga classes.
The first photo at the top is so reminiscent of Degas. Love ballet, it is truly a beautiful art form.
Magnifique!
OMG! These are gorgeous. Thanks a lot for sharing
OMG! These are gorgeous. Thanks a lot for sharing. I am loving this addition to the blog of adding “lifestyle” on top of fashion.

have been and will always be loving ballet. Going to a NYCB show next Friday!
C’est sublime!!
I have been a loyal follower of Garance Dore since the beginning. I have been bewitched, beguiled and bothered (in a nice way). However, the beauty of these two ballet series have touched my heart and soul. Without a doubt the most beautiful photos published on your blog. The beauty and sensitivity……..non paralled. Bravo and encore!!!
P.S. Who was the photographer? Once again INCROYABLE. MAGNIFIQUE. BREATH TAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL.
I was waiting to see more motion than poses in the ballet pictures and got it in Pt.2! Magic light on stage and beauty from all perspectives. For all fans of ballet: check out Jordan Matter’s project (it’s not a photoshop thing)

I have shivers down my spine every time I go to the especially when the Russian es are in town! )

WOW!!! Absolutely in love with the two posts!!! Congrats and thank you so much for transporting us there!
Encore !!
“Have you ever felt that at the ballet, too?”
Yes Brie, every time I watch it.
I trained as a dancer until my late teens when injury intervened; now bouldering(ask Garance about Fontainebleau…) is as close as I get to class or stage. These are lush, gorgeous images. They’d make a really rather lovely book or exhibition.
Le bun!
Merci Garance .
So beautiful!
Merci !

Magnifique!!
la grâce incarnée
This is one of the most exciting posts I have seen in a long time on any blog. If it possible, please let us know what makeup products you remember seeing the dancers using. Their makeup looks so beautiful!! Thank you.
Sublimissime!!!

“Serenade” is one of my favorite Balanchine ballets. So hauntingly beautiful. All my young life I wanted to be a ballerina, but it was not to be. I love anything ballet. Thank you so very much for this beautiful post Garance. It took my breath away. Reminded me so much of my favorite book “Baron’s Ballet Finale.”
you’re so fortunate to have been able to photograph the NYC ballet!!! every photo is perfect and amazing, as usual. each moment and movement you capture should be blown up and framed. and i love what you said… “when the curtain rises, you’re transported by a brief encounter with beautiful athleticism…” perfectly put?
These pictures are amazing!! I love the way they are presented with a background picture showing as you scroll down.
By the way; love your work, but having a hard time finding it in Sweden, although I have found a shop where your prints are available. It’s really a shame that postage is so expensive when shopping from the online store :( Got hold of the 2015 calendar :) :)
I’m speechless x
