Il y avait tellement de choses hallucinantes à voir, qu’on a décidé de faire ce post en deux parties ! Voici la suite !!!
L’après-midi, les danseurs se retrouvent sur scène pour un filage complet du spectacle du soir, sous l’œil des professeurs qui surveillent la moindre petite cambrure de pied. Eh oui… il y a juste une dernière répétition avant le grand spectacle.
Les coulisses sont très calmes… les danseurs finissent de s’échauffer en silence. La plupart se maquillent tout seuls. Les costumes sont carrément cousus sur les rôles principaux (on est obligé de les découper pour les enlever après le spectacle). Une dernière petite couche de colophane sous les chaussons pour éviter les glissades intempestives et c’est parti ! Ce soir aura lieu la representation de la Serenade, Agon et la Symphonie en ut majeur.
Lorsque le rideau se lève, on est transporté, le temps d’une parenthèse enchantée, dans un univers de prouesses physiques !
Et vous, ça vous donne aussi des frissons, la danse classique ?

Seeing these images are such joy. I saw the Balanchine show last Saturday, and it captivated me maybe more than any other ballet performance I’ve seen. Your images backstage, in rehearsals, for the performance are beautifully done and bring those incredible dancers intimately close. Thank you.

Gorgeous photos! I love ballet, classical and modern dance, bodies moving to music with grace, beauty and, hopefully, a lot of soul! I’ve seen a lot, and never get tired. The esthetics of classical ballet have been exploited by many artists through the times, but still moves me deeply every time I see it, or through the eyes of a new photographer, such as yours.. . Truly beautiful!

I cannot even express how much I love these two posts (+ the photos are just incredibly amazing). Moreover, I am right now in a very ballet phase myself: I’m 28 and for the first time in my life I gathered the courage to start adult ballet classes … and I loving them so much! The classes are great energy boosters and all the beauty and style around than I have never seen in other dance / yoga classes.
The first photo at the top is so reminiscent of Degas. Love ballet, it is truly a beautiful art form.

Yes Brie, every time I watch it.
I trained as a dancer until my late teens when injury intervened; now bouldering(ask Garance about Fontainebleau…) is as close as I get to class or stage. These are lush, gorgeous images. They’d make a really rather lovely book or exhibition.

« Serenade » is one of my favorite Balanchine ballets. So hauntingly beautiful. All my young life I wanted to be a ballerina, but it was not to be. I love anything ballet. Thank you so very much for this beautiful post Garance. It took my breath away. Reminded me so much of my favorite book « Baron’s Ballet Finale. »
