I just stepped foot into my apartment collapsed onto the couch, back from almost a month of fashion week. I have a small latte from Starbucks in my hand, the most regressive thing there is*, and I am wearing sweatpants from head to toe.
Can you picture the pure moment of bliss ???
Eyes half closed, I’m looking back on all of the moments of utter joy I lived at fashion week. And the little crappy moments, too. My highs and lows, if you will.
Ok, let’s start.
High: Meeting Karl. So nice, so funny, so intelligent, and so unsnobby I’ve decided I’d much like him to be my best friend. Now please.
Low: Karl saying to me, “Ah, Garance, you are very well dressed TO GO TO WORK.” Like I said, he’s very funny. Who cares if it’s at my expense?
High: Getting to Anna Dello Russo’s party, all excited, ready to dance all night.
Low : To find out we just missed Azealia Banks AND Anna Dello Russo descending down from the ceiling in a heart of flowers. Yeah, and then seeing everyone so excited, talking about how cool it was… Wanting to just sit down in the middle of it all and cry.
Deciding to leave.
High: Working with a team of dudes all day long. Making dirty jokes, being totally stupid, total roadie atmosphere. No better remedy for fashion weeks “Oh Myyyy Gaaaaaaad!!!”
High: Jalouse free ice cream at the entrance of the shows. So goood !
Low: The plywood benches at the Saint Laurent show whose splinters tore up my silk pants.
High: Who cares about my silk pants. It was worth it to be there.
Low: Getting yelled at by a bystander in front of a show, convinced I had “stolen a picture of him” and made me delete all the photos where you could kind of see him in the background. All this talking to me so, so, so bad.
High: The excitement at Dior. The wave of love for Raf Simons who has a reputation of being adorable and intelligent and grounded. I like when designers are so beloved like that. It fills the whole show with love.
High: Starting to find a rhythm. Starting to find some balance. Starting to find the most amazing team for Pardon My French. Nothing could make me happier than that. Total high !
Low: “Congrats on your Net-à-Porter campaign Garance! Wow, I didn’t recognize you! They did a great job at photoshopping right ?!” Mmmmmm. MERCI?
And it’s not even true. I have the original and it looks the same. Aaaaah, the friendliness of fashion. Oh. My. Gaaaaad.
Low: Openskies is done. Those of you who have ever flown with this company know what I’m talking about.
High: The croissant I ate every morning during fashion week telling myself each time that it was the last.
High: The fashion show photographers. They look like hardasses like that, but I know a few of them and they’re always so nice to me that I’d like to tell them a big hello. Bruno, the Pucci familly, Don, Sean, Valerio… You guys are the best !
Low: Being treated like a fashion show photographer at a fashion show.
Sometimes a security guy sees me with my giant camera and starts talking to me like I’m a runway photographer***. And I’ll tell you that sort of talk is anything but nice.
And then suddenly, even if I pull out my invite, he’ll get all nasty on me and push me. Yep. It’s happened. One time it was so violent I had to hold back tears.
It gives me so much respect for runway photographers who live that every day, and yet still, like I said earlier, continue to be so nice and smiling.
And frankly, without them, who would even see these fucking fashion shows?
High: Dries Van Noten, so beautiful. Valentino, Céline, Alexander McQueen.
High: Scott’s book signing at Colette. It’s always such a pleasure to meet you!!!
High : The moment when I saw myself on TV, and when I actually found myself… Pretty! Yeah that never happens so let me tell you without any fake modesty, this was a real high! Thanks to the make up artist, the hairdresser and the wonderful lighting at the Grand Journal.
High: Someone we didn’t know gave a FreeWifi (an allover the city Internet network that you can access only with a code – yeah no it’s not, actually, FREE) code to John, our editor, for no reason other than that he’s super cute and being good to your neighbor. Thank you, person I’ll never know, that code saved our fashion week multiple times, seeing the catastrophicity of the 3G reception is in Paris.
High: “Can I take a photo of your outfit?”
Low: “Can I get a photo of your shoes?”
Low (er) : “Can you move a little so I can take a picture of your friend?”
High: Caroline, Sophie, Lauren, Massoud, Suzanne, Emily, Violaine, Aurélie, Laure, Elisa, Viviana, Angelo, Scott, Alexandra, Anna, Selima, Jenna, Emmanuelle… Having you around really changes my life. That must be what experience feels like, too. Feeling supported.
Low: Gino, our executive producer that some of you love so much (he’s so cuuuuuuuuuute who is thaaaat?!) took a Pizza Hut bay window to the face. Result: Giant black eye. Yeah, we all got a good laught…. Afterward. You’ll see it in the last Fashion Week Diary. Don’t laugh though. He loves it.
High : Reading all your comments on my post “About Changes”. I always try not explain or justify my work, cause I feel it’s too easy. But reading all your feedback gave me all the energy I needed for fashion week. So thank you!!! High! High! High!

So I woke up to see what was new with Garance, who I adore, and at first glimpse saw a really long post that got me excited because I love love love reading your writing. Then I started reading and it occurred to me that I have never even considered the possibilty that anyone in their right mind would treat you badly–You’re such a treasure!! So BOO to them: the nasty security guards, the benches at YSL (is it wrong that even though they’ve long since dropped the Yves; I still say YSL?), and a little bitty boo to Karl for his unwarranted, snarky comment (show us what you were wearing to meet him, pretty please!!!!!), but it’s only a little bitty one because I do have a deep and unwavering respect for him, but I’m torn because when you’re offended, I’m offended, Garance. Really.
All in all, I’m sure many years from now you’ll only look on this experience with fondness. It’s good that your shedding yourself of these annoying, frustrating things now and I hope it proves cathartic. If you’re still peeved just remember that with time and with that a new perspective the pain (is “pain” too dramatic a term for this?) will subside. Can’t wait to see what you do next!!!
Random thought, many years from now wouldn’t it be cool if you wrote a memoir, but it wasn’t a traditional memoir and it be punctuated with your fabulous illustrations or rather, more a pro pos the drawings most meaningful to you in your life…
Hey Ami : These things are kind of part of fashion week. People are nervous, frustrated… I’ve learned to suck it up ! It’s actually a great way to learn to keep your zen in any situation and I actually think that it can prove to be pretty good for the ego : Like anytime it could start to inflate, it gets thrown down on the ground ;)))

Not going to lie- I kind of love you more now. Such a good recap. Everyone thinks fashion and glamor are one in the same. Yes, fashion helps create glamor but the road from start to finish isn’t always as glamorous as people expect. I (secretly) love your lows, it makes you so much more real and wonderful.

Comme je disais je me suis surprise à être émue en vous voyant au Grand journal comme si une amie passait à la télé. C’est un truc un peu dingue le blog. Enfin, je devrais dire ce blog. L’impression de partager la vie d’une pote qu’on ne connait pas.

C’est bizarre, n’est-ce-pas, la mode semble apparence (pour ne pas dire superficialité !) et pourtant, ce sont les gens qui ont un “fond” qui du coup nous touchent vraiment dans ce milieu :
> la profonde culture de Karl Lagerfeld, dont on devine qu’il n’est pas dupe de tous ces apparats (façon Gainsbourg, il sait que la mode et la chanson sont des arts appliqués et non pas de l’ART)
> Et ton fond à toi, le “bon fond” qu’on ressent chez toi, belle personne, et en même temps le fond de vérité, tu es restée humaine, profondément humaine, même si tu côtoies ce monde des rich and famous qui peut en désorienter plus d’un.
> Et tous les autres que je ne connais pas, mais j’ai l’impression qu’il y en a beaucoup chez tes amies (par exemple cette amie italienne blonde aux cheveux courts, qui a l’air d’être aussi une très belle personne !!)

Vas-y balance, je suis prête, de toutes façons, j’ai déjà tout prévu pour mon dernier jour de vie ( je parle de mon crash d’avion ) … ( j’ai peur de l’avion, je déteste ça depuis que j’ai mes enfants … et là, j’en laisse un en France pour 5 jours, au secours ! ). Repos bien mérité!!! J’ai lu l’ensemble des commentaires et je suis en accord avec tous les compliments concernant les pardon my french. Vraiment, un pur délice!!! et ce matin tu nous fais le plaisir d’une illustration. Mis à part, les rencontres et les images, tu nous et vous nous faites découvrir de la chouette musique. Je viens tout juste de télécharger Touladis de Alaclair ensemble. Ils sont géniaux et je ne les connaissais pas malgré fait que je suis aussi québécoise, comme eux!!! AAAyyy la petite Garance….je suis très contente de tes “highs”, et je veut te dire comment nous le voyons: sincèrement…un travail épuisante de la parte de vous tous!!! mille merci…nous…ton vrai public, nous avons suivi vos exploits avec enthousiasme !!! même si le monde-mediathique-instantanée-de la mode te fait sentir dehors…tu doit tjr te répéter…je suis avant cet défile ( a réfléchir, n’oublie pas que ton blog est avant net a porter!!)!!! pas pour devenir arrogante, mais pour ne pas te bléser par un pauvre type que te maltraite un instant….un plus, avec la fatigue, la tension, le stress..surement t’étais hypersensible!! Avec Karl…J”ADORÉE T’ECOUTER PARLER UN BEAU FRANÇAIS!!!! tu change, t’étais si digne, si a ta place, sans fausse complaisance ni un regard adulateur non plus!! bravo!!
Le badaud..ils sont par tout…je suis surpris de ta réaction..t’es vraiment élégante…moi? je l’aurai ….je ne sais pas!!
et par rapport a ton image et l’impression qu’elle cause: je tjr aimée ton auto-dérision..on peut pas plaire a tout le monde, et il y a des jaloux/ses que veulent nous le faire savoir (inutilement, d’ailleurs) il te faudra profiter les “character building posibilities” qui t’entourent!! on est avec toi!! repose toi!! est-ce que tu savait?, un jour de récupération par chaque heure de différence horaire…marcher, dormir la nuit, pas le jour, et boire bcp!! on te pardonnera de ne pas nous écrire pendant quelque jours…
SO many great experiences. Wish I can experience these moments some day and that bystander was pretty crazy if you ask me :D

Low n° 7 (les bouledogues des défilés) : Les personnes qui travaillent à la mise au point des modèles de défilé, lorsqu’elles ont la chance de se faire octroyer une invitation (c’est de plus en plus rare), se font souvent aboyer dessus et traiter comme des gueux (alors qu’on vient de passer une ou plusieurs nuits sans sommeil) par ces charmants messieurs dont le travail commence au moment où le nôtre se termine.
Garance, tu voudrais etre la meilleure amie de Karl et moi, je voudrais etre ta meilleure amie.

Apres 1 mois de fashion week, chapeau, ton energie et ton sens de l’ humour sont toujours intacts! Merci de nous avoir fait voyager, de nous avoir fait découvrir les nouvelles collections mais aussi et surtout, merci de nous avoir fait sourire via tes posts! Quant a tes “diaries” de Paris, ils me donnent une envie irrésistible…sauter dans l’avion et retrouver notre douce France ;-)
Quel plaisir de lire toutes ses anecdotes sur la fashion week, et oui c’est vrai, durant les shows, on voit vraiment la différence d’importance de chaque invité (pour ma part en standing les 3/4 du temps, mais c’est toujours magique d’apprécier un défilé, assis ou débout). Le pire c’était chez Elie Saab, il pleuvait des cordes, “tout le monde” rentrait vite fait sous la tente des Tuileries, et moi, standing de mon état, j’ai attendu presque 45 minutes, trempé, mais ça en valait largement la peine.
Gros bide lorsque Bill Cunningham m’a demandé de m’écarter pour prendre en photo mon ami (cf the lower), six feet under quoi, mais il est tellement souriant que j’en étais presque consolé.

Your posts (especially the videos) make me smile so much. I’m living my dream life through you! Watching your assistant (?) cry after her first Chanel show, admitting the jacket-over-the-shoulders thing is anything but practical, the interview with Guillaume Henry (OMG that man is special), how well you get a long with your team and all the behind-the-scenes moments…ahh, just know you’ve made a girl from tiny Honduras (with barely any chances of making it to a Paris FW) fall even more in love with fashion.
Garance – so many compliments to you and your content. The internet is amazing as is watching the evolution of a person and her blog. You are so generous and brave with what you choose to share of your world and yourself. Now to something more petty, want to share the lipstick colors your wore for your interview (more subtle) and the perfect red, for you, that you or the make up person selected for your tv moment with Karl? :)

You: “Yeah… I’m *working* the hell out of this dress”…*snaps fingers, walks away* (yeah, two snaps up is very 90’s, but you get my point)

Never let a back handed complimenter off the hook. Next time just look at them blankly and simply ask, “What do you mean???” and let them continue to dig their own awkward hole. Or you could just go Southern on them and say “oh, look at you, bless your heart…”

I think it would be much cooler to say Gino’s black eye came from coming perilously close to catching a case by defending your honor with the rude bystander who made you delete photos. Much better than a Pizza Hut window, no?

Sometimes the lows are there to make the highs so great! I loved watching you next to KL and Loic Prigent at The Grand Journal – pity my very basic high school french did not stand the test of time to be able to translate the video… but I thoroughly enjoyed watching the genuine excitement on your face. Oh to be in the audience:) And also the Pardon My French episode with your Valentino preview – aaah, magic. And as for security at the shows – pffft! They should be ashamed of themselves – seriously, like you say, who would see the clothes if it weren’t for the photographers in the first place!:)

It’s great to read about the lows as well as the highs! Though some of the smarminess seems not as great to have to experience. I love your blog, and can’t get enough of the vidoes. You have a great personality and camera presence and always look so cute. And I confess, while I try to not to be too obvious an imitator of anyone in how I dress, I can’t help but push my blazer sleeves up above my elbows now! Plus, what about those days when there is nothing to do with my hair but put in a bun? Well, I wear that bun with pride. xoxo.

Ce post évoque énormément d’émotions dont j’ai fait l’expérience dans le milieu qui est le mien : l’art contemporain et plus particulièrement les foires. Des joies sublimes, des moments d’épuisements et toujours la course, toujours être à l’affût, surtout. Ces grands rendez-vous, on les attend avec une impatience folle et on n’est pas non plus tout à fait mécontente qu’ils se terminent!
C’est éprouvant mais ça nous ravit tout de même… ‘No pain, no gain’ comme on dit dans les salles de sport :)
Un petit message du fin fond de l’Aveyron (quand j’écris cela, j’ai l’impression d’être enterrée en terre inconnue!).

Tu es magnifique et tellement sympa que chez toi , çà se voit.

This is actually a hilarious post. I was at Paris Fashion week for one of the shows too and I completely agree. Having to move out of the way so a fashion photographer can take a picture of your friend is a bit embarassing
