Aujourd’hui, je vous emmène au défilé Diane Von Furstenberg avec Amanda De Cadenet, une fille un petit peu en dehors de la mode mais dont j’adore le point de vue, la franchise, la douceur et aussi sa super émission qui s’appelle The Conversation.
Elle y fait des interviews hyper intimes avec des plein de filles plutôt intéressantes, le genre qu’il suffit d’appeler par leur prénom, vous savez, Gwyneth, Crystal, Alicia, Lady (ahah), etc…
Et je me disais que si vous ne la connaissez pas déjà, ça me ferait plaisir que vous la découvriez !
Bon, après, le truc, c’est qu’on a tellement parlé qu’une seule question reste en suspens… Est-ce qu’on est arrivée à l’heure au show DVF ?

Je crois aussi que c’est l’une de mes vidéos préférée, je connaissais son show et je l’avais regardé sur son blog et à chaque fois après l’avoir vu je me sentais incroyablement bien et touchée par toutes ces histoires partagées par des personnalités qui du fait de leur célébrité semblent à des années lumières de nous. D’ailleurs cela m’avait directement fait penser à ton blog car malgré la distance (matérielle) entre l’endroit d’où tu écris,l’endroit d’où elle filmait et n’importe quel endroit où tes lecteurs et ses “viewers “ se trouvent, on sent une réelle connexion, un vrai lien, et ça c’est vraiment sympa !
j’adore tes vidéos Garance (et le reste aussi) !! je regarde plusieurs fois par jour si il y a un nouveau billet … ton blog est une vraie Drogue !!!!

Je ne connaissais pas Amanda (merci pour la découverte !) mais en la voyant à l’écran, j’imagine très bien pourquoi ses interviews marchent : elle est sensible (mais dans le bon sens du terme), ca se voit dans la manière dont elle te parle et elle n’a elle-même aucune difficulté à s’ouvrir devant la caméra !
Bref, c’est mon Pardon My French préféré !

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this conversation! Finally a woman speaks honestly about having a body that doesn’t fit the fashion norm. There are so many of us who can’t wear the clothes shown on fashion blogs because our bodies are not in perfect proportion. I have a small frame, thin legs and arms but my bust is big. It is almost impossible to find a dress that fits my body and is fashionable. Forget blazers, double breasted jackets and most blouses. It is so challenging to shop!
Garance, I love your blog but I was beginning to wonder if I would ever see a woman featured whom I could relate to. Today I feel included. Thank you.

Wow, thanks to Amanda for being so honest about her insecurities. I was thinking how wonderful it was to see you with a woman who isn’t fashion-sized and yet glows (I was really surprised when she mentioned body image, she seems so comfortable in her own skin!), but knowing that she’s brave enough to mention her doubts rather than imply than the rest of us are shallow for feeling them… Wonderful. A true beauty.
And soooo fitting after recently seeing a slender girl screaming « Oh My God So Much Cake So Naughty! » while leaving 90% of it on the plate ;)

It is good to see that Amanda de Cadanet has grown up to be so sensible and accomplished. She certainly had early exposure to fame (though I think there were more than 3 famous people in the UK then), but sought it as much as she could rather than having it thrust upon her. Unlike so many « wild child » wannabes, she has worked hard and developed not one but two high levels of accomplishment and become a very elegant, well balanced woman. C’est de loin ma video préférée! Probablement parce qu’Amanda croque son chocolat avec une gourmandise non feinte, vraiment naturelle. Et la conversation est tellement honnête, loin du discours souvent énervant de filles qui disent « assumez-vous telles que vous êtes et profitez des plaisirs de la table » mais qui se limitent en permanence et semblent défaillir en voyant un bout de tarte arriver devant elles ;-)
Je me faisais aussi la réflexion qu’on te voyait souvent en plat, dans les derniers PMF.
Et j’ai bien ri après que tu aies croqué ton chocolat: le montage donne l’impression que tu te poudre le visage avec la moitié de ton chocolat ;-)

Ce que j’aime sur ton blog, c’est sa spontanéité. Dans ce que tu écris, tes photos, tes illustrations, tes vidéos, il y a quelque chose de généreux, de naturel. Comme sur ce « Pardon My French » ! J’ai lu l’une de ses interview il y a peu dans le Glamour UK si je me souviens bien. Je m’étais déjà dit que Amanda avait l’air d’être quelqu’un de vraiment intéressant, que ce soit par son parcours ou sa manière de voir les choses. Cette vidéo ne fait que confirmer mon ressenti. Comme dit plus haut, elle est inspirante, touchante, et elle semble vraiment abordable.
Dans tous les cas, merci pour ces vidéos et ton travail, c’est vraiment sympa de pouvoir regarder un peu l’envers du décor et de découvrir différentes personnalités (P.S: j’aime vraiment la manière dont sont réalisés les vidéos et les musiques utilisées).
C’est dingue, mais j’avais presque l’impression d’être dans ce café avec vous. Ces vidéos sont passionnantes, immersives, j’ai même stressé que vous n’arriviez pas à l’heure :)

Très belle entrevue qui m’a fait découvrir Amanda! Vos échanges m’ont ramené à ma propre expérience. M’approchant de la cinquantaine, mes amies et des personnes que je croisent me font la remarque combien je ne fais pas mon âge, que je n’ai pas de rides, etc… je trouve cela flatteur mais comme le dit si bien Amanda, mon cerveau me dit autre chose. What a breath of fresh air. Please assure Amanda the body issues affect men too; near fifty I no longer have the hard body from my twenties when I was climbing every day I could in Fontainebleau and had gone through fifteen plus years of ballet training. I miss that body. A great deal of Merlot, parenthood, chocolate and happy lunches have passed though.
With all that life and parenthood drops on us though, Amanda still looks great. Long may she(and you!) laugh, enjoy chocolate and friends(there are few greater callings)

Wow, that one really got to me. It hurts to hear people struggle so openly with their insecurities. What a complete surprise! My initial reaction was what a beautiful, curvy woman. I felt encouraged by her security and beauty. As the video progressed and she was honest, my heart went out to her. It’s so hard to mentally adjust to physical changes (babies, aging, illness). I applaud her for working through it and hope someday she sees how incredibly awesome she is just the way she is.

I know because now in my age (40+) it’s difficult most of the time to find clothes that fits and that I can look good despite my age. Une des mes interviews préférées , Amanda à une très belle personnalité qu’elle a finalement réussi à bien affirmer … J’aimerais réussir à en faire autant !
Ouah avant qu’elle ne parle de son corps, je me suis fais la réflexion que ,enfin, sur ton blog on pouvait voir une femme avec des formes et qui s’assume complètement. Puis vient la question des complexes qu’elle aborde naturellement et je me dis que même une femme rayonnante peut se sentir ma dans sa peau.
Il y a réellement un souci dans le milieu de la mode avec le corps de la femme que je trouve maltraité et je pense aussi que je ne suis pas née à la bonne époque.
J’ai l’impression de connaître son visage. Mais rien de plus. En tout cas, elle est magnifique, qu’elle reste comme elle est ! Elle a un charme fou. Et les créateurs les plus en vogue se ratent bien des ventes s’ils ne sont pas capables de proposer des robes au-delà du 36-38 (J’espère que si, rassure-moi !).
J’adore son caractère, elle se replace en intervieweuse très naturellement pendant votre entrevue, c’est très amusant. J’ai envie de découvrir son blog. Elle a construit un sacré réseau autour d’elle, c’est fou. Remarque, intéressante comme elle est, cela ne m’étonne pas. Elle paraît déterminée et fragile à la fois.
Et le suspense sur votre arrivée : on avait l’impression d’être avec vous !

J’ai toujours voulu commenter, et réagir à tes articles, seulement j’avais envie de pouvoir t’écrire quelque chose de vrai et de pertinent, et t’expliquer à quel point j’aime ce que tu partages ici avec tes lectrices. J’ai aujourd’hui abandonné l’idée de te laisser le commentaire le plus génial du monde, tant pis, il est temps à présent de sortir de l’ombre!!! Donc…je me lance, c’est le grand jour, youpi!
Le plus simple est de te dire merci, ton blog est une réelle source d’inspiration, mais il est surtout la preuve que lorsque l’on veut quelque chose, on peut l’avoir, il suffit d’y croire. Je trouve que c’est le message qui domine ton blog, et Amanda le dit très bien dans cette vidéo, que j’ai d’ailleurs trouvé très touchante. J’ai enfin compris que lorsque l’on avait des rêves, il fallait foncer, aller droit dans le mur s’il le faut, se donner à fond et…constater que ça marche. Je pense sincèrement que tes écrits, illustrations, photographies et vidéos m’ont permis de voir plus loin, et d’une certaine manière, de croire en moi.

I just had to reply to this post as my whole life, I have heard comments such as « real women », « real bodies »….and my whole life I have naturally been skinny. I can’t help it and I was rather self conscious when I was younger :), but I learned to like my own skin and we can’t help the way we look, so let’s be happy, have a good attitude and enjoy it :).
I just get confused about the comments that I hve heard my entire life…I love food, but I’m naturally skinny so I’m not a real woman? I would lie new curves but I et and eat and nothing happens, so I’m not a real woman?
Hmmm :), I think we all are different shapes and sizes, we all look different :), so let’s help eachother along the way and say that we are all beautiful in our own way and we are all real women!
Sorry about the preaching! I am not always preaching I promise :)…I simply wanted to provide a different point of view on this ongoing debate of « real women » :)

I was going to say the same thing as Armita. Even the super skinny models (naturally skinny I imagine and even if they are starving themselves), why on earth wouldn’t they qualify as real women? I have always found it insulting to them

Thank you for your thoughts and I agree with what you are saying.
I in no way mean to discount thinner women for not being considered « Real Women » .My point was more that the success of models like kate Upton have encouraged designers to make clothes for more « everyday ladies » . As the average American woman wears a dress size 12- 14 ( my size ) there are now more options in high street and designer stores which is a good thing for me and woman who are my size!
I have a couple of very dear friends who can’t put weight on and would like to , so i am aware of this challenge too ! Thanks for reminding me to be mindful with my choice of words around this topic..

I think all this ‘real’ vs ‘skinny’ is all fluff… there is only one type of category we need to concern ourselves with, which is healthy vs unhealthy.

Beauty can’t be defined in shape and size but in virtues, talents, confidence, compassion, solidarity, kindness and above everything, love. It saddens me that a woman like Amanda will let herself get upset over her body shape, if only she knew what it is that she projects that leaves no room for anyone to not see just overloads of beauty on her. Beauty is AdR dancing up a storm, fashion is AdR posing at a the entrance of a fashion show. Nothing wrong with the latter, but let’s not mix them up.
Garance, i think this is my favorite video yet! And believe me, I love them all. I hope Amanda includes you on the next season of The Conversation. You have so much to share and so many to inspire.

Me too! You’re the only fashion blog I follow! I have even stopped buying major fashion mags because they just don’t do it for me like your blog does. Why would I buy boring recycled covers of singers and actors when I could get a look at what the real « cool girls » are wearing? Love the videos – it gives a very « intimate » look at your fabulous subjects.
That Amanda doesn’t like her body illustrates to me how crazy our body culture has become; she is so gorgeous!!

RE. previous comments about the term « real women » and how it serves to encompass those who are not naturally thin, I don’t believe this term suggests that women who are naturally lean or slender are not « real women. » I think the term intends to consider those women for whom the fashion industry has seemed to neglect because their body types do not match those of the models or because the pieces in the various collections overwhelmingly do not flatter what differs from the fashion industry norm. A « normal woman » may be a naturally thin woman with a bountiful bosom, as indicated in a previous post; it may be a short woman with curvy hips; a tall woman with a tummy and muscular thighs.; or a woman of normal height who is deliciously voluptuous.
I think that designers who create flattering pieces for all sorts of body types find a fierce loyalty among their client base. I believe that, generally speaking, women look for pieces that lend to feeling strong, confident, and protected when they slip on whatever the piece may be. When designers create to flatter « normal women, » it seems that they remain beloved by the masses for decades on end.

I’m skinny too, I was a model back in my 20s… but I didn’t take what Amanda said the wrong way. I feel like a « Real woman » because of the clothes I wear. In your 30s you know exactly what kind of clothes that fits you the best.
But even if I’m skinny with boobs, I feel that the real women are the one in the Renaissance paintings!…not me but that’s ok, I learn to live with that idea, we are all very different and that’s the beautiful part in life!
This would have to be one of my favourite videos you have made recently (beside ADR dancing of course!). I had never heard of Amanda but will be sure to check her out. What she said about you what pretty much how I feel too.. There’s such a natural, down-to-earth vibe about you that makes you so appealing in such a superficial industry. In a way, you are that natural girl that we can all relate to, whether your talking about fashion, skin care, weight and exercise (or lack of) and dating. You’re more than a fashion blog, and that’s nice.
1. Love those sneakers and skirt combination , it’s a great look on you Garance.
2.Amanda has nothing to complain about…she is of the most gorgeous women I have seen.
3.I really think everyone needs to be reminded that models are mainly teenagers and very young , as they age they too will have new insecurities like everyone else who loses the aspects of beauty unique to youth. Why are comparisons ever made between older women and models? It can be like comparing yourself to your teenage daughters and that’s just weird.
4. Even I can’t wear DVF wrap dresses and I am skinny.Like another person wrote, I too am thin with a naturally full bust and these wrap dresses make me look very matronly. I feel in order to wear DVF dresses you need a smaller bust but more voluptuous hips and good substantial legs like DVF herself.
So no matter what the size , obviously because clothes aren’t individually made for us of course there will be fit issues, but there are so many options to choose from these days we are bound to find something we relate to and gives us a confidence boost! Like Amanda looking fantastic in the vintage black dress with sexy boots.
I completely agree with this – I am thin but with a big bust and I look ridiculous in DVF dresses. They look great on women with a modest bustline!

Thank you for this wonderful piece, Garance (and especially for introducing me to Amanda’s show which I stayed up WAY too late watching last night…I couldn’t stop, it’s THAT good). I’ve been going through my own weight struggles the past few years, having always been naturally super skinny but, since around the age of 38 (I’m almost 43 now), I’m finding it more and more difficult to keep weight off. Seeing Amanda and how beautiful she is was a serious moment for me! No kidding, by the end of watching you two chatting, I started feeling better about my body the way it is *right now*. Thank you for all you do! :)
Just last night I saw Amanda’s Net-a-Porter ad in a magazine and thought, « Gosh, that woman’s body is amazing! »
yeah this little diddy you made here was big…….real big….for both you and Amanda. It had heart and soul. Dont be surprised if television networks come knocking at your door.

I caught her show recently and loved her interview with DVF, especially the part in which DVF talked about her mother surviving a concentration camp and what that taught her about what is possible in life – amazing and inspirational! It’s sad though that a woman as physically beautiful as Amanda can’t get out of her head and forget about comparing her body to those of (largely) young models! I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, per se, but my dad dying at a young age made me throw all of that out the window. I think every day about what a privilege it is to grow older – to age, to live in a body that changes with time and use.
I can’t tell you how much I loved this interview/video! I found it so incredibly inspiring! I completely agree with what Amanda said – you are one of my favourite bloggers; you have such a real, personal & relatable perspective to fashion and seem so friendly and nice! And definitely not intimidating like some other people in fashion ha ha! I always look forward to your posts! Keep on blogging forever and ever! You inspire me, Garance!

Je trouve Amanda vraiment belle. Son visage était le canon de beauté de la fin des années 80, début 90, tout comme Jenna de Rosnay par exemple. Allure californienne et saine, peau bronzée, dents blanches, cheveux blonds, petit nez mutin, lèvres roses et formées… Elle devait faire partie du paysage sans que je sache qui elle était, son visage était le canon de beauté, la fille que je voulais être (alors que j’ai un grand nez, des cheveux bouclés et châtain, donc pas d’espoir). Je la trouve toujours très belle et avec une peau très jeune. Et oui un peu ronde, mais c’est relatif au monde de la mode qui est plus que mince.

Un petit ( hum hum) commentaire pour te dire que je suis ton blog depuis presque deux ans, et que je le trouve tellement agréable à lire/observer/regarder!
J’aime la mode, comme beaucoup de filles, mais pas forcément la haute couture. Je vois ça plutôt comme une forme d’art, tellement les coupes, les couleurs, et les prix me paraissent loin de la réalité. Mais avec ton blog, tu ouvres une belle fenêtre sur ce monde un peu mystique aux filles « normales » (le nouveau crédo made in France), qui ont une activité pas forcément en rapport avec ce monde mais qui trouvent l’esthétisme, la féminité et le style pas forcément futiles, mais le voient plutot comme un moyen d’expression très libérateur.
Alors oui quand on voit ton agenda, entre deux front row et une rencontre avec « Daïaaane », on se dit que tu fais partir d’un monde parallèle. Mais ta sincérité, ton humour, enfin ton vrai toi, sont tellement proches de nous, qu’on se dit que la mode ce n’est pas VIP only.
J’espère que tu pourras lire ce commentaire (je sais que tu es assidue!), car j’aimerai vraiment te dire un grand et sincère merci pour ces petits moments glamour et stylés qui font que, où et qui qu’elle soit, une femme reste une femme, avec tout ce que ça implique.

I remember Amanda when she was in the UK and its funny to hear her now very American accent mixed with some Britishness! She called her body IT quite a few times in the interview which was a little sad to hear.I would love to hear that women would value other parts of themselves like their intelligence and creativity and stop focusing so much on their looks and body.It brings a feeling of peace if you can do it sometimes!
