The Importance of Independence: Linda Rodin

J’ai toujours trouvé génial que les meilleures idées naissent d’une nécessité personnelle. Linda ne trouvait rien qui lui plaisait sur le marché des cosmétiques pour sa peau, donc elle a créé sa propre huile, commencé à la distribuer à ses amies, et deux ans plus tard, la demande était telle qu’elle a dû monter sa boîte. Un peu le rêve, non ? Eh oui. Et c’est là que ça commence à devenir vraiment intéressant ! Linda ne s’est pas laissée happer par le conte de fées, depuis que sa marque connaît le succès, elle est restée elle-même, n’a rien changé à son mode de vie et respire le bonheur. Aujourd’hui, dans Pardon My French, elle nous confie quelques-uns de ses secrets…

L’influence de sa mère…
Elle était sculptrice, elle créait des choses. Elle dessinait, faisait des découpages. C’est la première personne que j’ai vue arborer une French manucure. En gros avec ma sœur, souvent, on se demandait « Qu’est-ce qu’elle a encore trouvé ? Pourquoi ? » mais c’était quelqu’un de très créatif. J’ai des photos d’elle en jean et col roulé sur son vélo, ce qui a inspiré mon rouge à lèvres ‘Billy on the Bike’ (ndlr, « Billy à vélo »). Je crois que pendant toute mon enfance, ça a imprégné mon subconscient. Je ne me rendais pas compte qu’elle me transmettait tout ça, vraiment pas. Et maintenant, je me dis : « Bien sûr que c’est moi ! »
Son entreprise…
L’argent ne m’a jamais motivée, déjà. Bien sûr, c’est agréable d’en avoir, je mentirais si je disais que je n’aime pas être indépendante. Je ne me suis jamais mariée, je n’ai pas eu de père richissime, donc j’ai toujours subvenu à mes propres besoins, et j’en suis fière. Pour ce qui est de mes cosmétiques, j’ai envie de faire des choses auxquelles je crois, des choses dont j’ai besoin ou envie. Donc ça donne une direction. Je n’ai pas envie de faire des produits comme ça, pour gagner plein d’argent, ça n’a jamais été mon objectif.
Sa vie sociale…
J’ai des amis qui sont plus jeunes, des amis plus âgés… je n’ai jamais eu de problème avec l’âge, ça n’a pas d’importance. Quand je suis avec des amis plus jeunes, je leur raconte des histoires qu’ils ont du mal à croire : « Non, mais c’est dingue ! » Comme par exemple déambuler dans la rue à 20 ans et tomber sur Harvey Keitel… c’est le genre de chose qui ne pourrait plus se produire aujourd’hui ! Tout est tellement moins spontané ! « Mais comment est-ce que tu vas faire pour aller à cette fête ou rencontrer telle ou telle personne ? »
Son huile…
J’ai toujours eu plein de petits flacons de petites choses. C’est au Maroc que j’ai découvert l’huile d’onagre. L’huile de primerose, j’en mettais depuis des années quand j’avais une petite éruption… Bref, j’utilisais pas mal de petites choses et un jour, je me suis dit que j’allais les mélanger pour voir le résultat. Pourquoi pas ? J’adorais mélanger les choses, même les vêtements, acheter une chemise et en couper les manches. J’aime bien customiser… donc j’ai pensé à faire une huile à partir de toutes les huiles que j’aimais. J’ai tâtonné, fait des erreurs, il m’a fallu 6 mois pour arriver à la version parfaite.
Les privilèges de l’âge…
Une bonne couverture santé, les réductions au cinéma, la Fête des retraités [Rires]. Non, la santé, c’est la vraie richesse. Tout ce qui m’importe, c’est d’être en bonne santé.
Rester soi-même…
J’ai toujours eu du caractère, des opinions très tranchées, et je ne vais pas m’en excuser. Vous n’êtes pas obligés d’être d’accord avec moi, on est tous différents, c’est la vie. Je crois qu’on a moins de scrupules à être soi-même, et c’est un vrai soulagement. Parce qu’on n’essaie pas de faire plaisir aux autres. On essaie d’être soi-même, aussi bienveillant que possible, attentif aux autres. Et si on est attentif à soi-même, les choses sont plus simples. C’est vraiment ça qui est agréable quand on vieillit.

She’s so so lovely and really such an inspiration! I have to say I feel the same way about driving. I always say, I’m a lifetime passenger, not navigator, lifetime passenger and I’ll bring the conversation (and maybe the snacks)! I just want to have the ability to think and have my mind wander, which is also why I love walking to commute (NO HEAD PHONES) to just let my mind wander in the most beautiful way!

Garance — I just listened to the podcast and it was amazing. SO inspirational. I am only 27 but have lived my life, thus far, much like Linda, kind of trying something out and then moving onto the next thing, never with a big goal ahead of me. I’ve always wondered if this is an « OK » way to live, and this podcast has confirmed that there is no « right » way to finding your path. Linda has just followed her intuition and taken opportunities as they’ve arrived, and she has become incredibly successful! Thank you for this! I want more! P.S. Your voice/accent is adorable. :)

Dear Garance, I love the podcast, Linda is so inspiring. Just one thing hit me – the story about your cabdriver. It hit me because I, most probably like him, do not have the job of my dreams, nor any soon future prospects thereof. In that way, I can completely understand and relate to him wanting to be done with his job by certain age. And I don’t think it was meant to mean that he wants to be done with life and doing something, but rather freed from the obligations that not necessarily enrich him on intellectual or any other level. When someone has a job like you, amazing and talented creatives do, it’s easy to forget that there are myriads of soulcrushing jobs people do just to make ends meet.

I am floored by this interview! I just LOVE how surprised I was by her — she is so simple and humble, a homebody (and as you say, so unapologetically herself)! Complete opposite from what I would have thought she would be given her outfit choices and very colorful apartment. I thought she would be overtly vivacious and loud (which would have been lovable and interesting, too). Just not what I expected. I am so pleasantly surprised! Bravo!

Loved this interview so much! I am 60 and have the book The Lotte Burke Method which did come out in the 70’s, so I had to laugh when she said no one would remember it. I love her authenticity and just everything about her, thank you so much!

Loved this interview – my all-time favourite!
Linda’s advice to listen to her body – I really hear that; and Garance’s admission that she doesn’t always been know if she’s tired/hungry – I’ve done that far too often, as well. Hearing Linda has really encouraged me to make time to sleep and rest and rejuvenate (something even my poor husband has never yet been able to encourage me to do)
