Role Play
9 years ago by
Fashion is all about slipping in and out of different roles, but Steven Meisel’s fashion photography takes this idea of fantasy to the next level. His subjects exist in a universe of their own.
Some of my favorite photos of Meisel’s are the most outlandish. Like his images of two women melting on a city sidewalk (or maybe they’re getting a tan?? Haha?). Others are more subtle though, like ones where gender is blurred beautifully. When I’m flipping through a magazine, I can always tell which photographs are Meisel’s because they make you want to stop and study them. They’re not meant for quick consumption or to simply look “pretty”. They’re an escape, which is why you’re looking at a fashion magazine in the first place, right?
Do you have a favorite photograph of Meisel’s?
“Role Play,” a selection of Meisel’s work is on view at Phillips Gallery until 3 March (450 Park Avenue, New York).
J’adore ce cliché sexy et décalé!
Bises!
