Totokaelo

Totokaelo is that wild idea that came to life, yet still feels a little like a dream.
It’s one of the most beautiful stores in New York right now, and a place you don’t just go to shop — but to be inspired, and surrounded by (and stare at), the beautiful pieces around you. When owner and founder Jill Wenger recently opened the doors to her second location, right near us (dangerous!!) here in Soho, we all waited with bated breath…
The destination is so open and big it could be overwhelming, but what Jill has done is break it up into smaller rooms. It was formerly home to an artist (for decades), so she used the divided spaces to create more intimate areas, broken up into color themes (so very Garance Doré in a way!). My favorite is the white room, at the very top. It’s minimal yet cozy, and you can look down at the other floors — but the best part is the outdoor area, filled with green plants and hand-dyed indigo blankets, which feels almost like a secret garden…
It’s a very specific style, totally different to Opening Ceremony, which we also love. Other spaces include the black room, where you can expect to find plenty of Rick Owens; a VIP dressing room, where you can have a member of staff personally attend to you and your friends (!!!)(a little chi chi, but maybe for a special occasion?); walls of shoes; denim areas… But they are constantly experimenting, moving things around. So you can almost always expect things to look a little different each time you visit!

It reminds me a bit the high-ceiling, bright and the overall atmosphere in appartements or stores in Amsterdam
Stunning. I’ve been following their online shop for ages! Always so inspiring. I hope to visit one of their stores at some point. X
L’endroit semble incroyable! J’aimerai beaucoup m’y rendre un jour.
Tes photos sont incroyables.

I just read a long article about Jill Wenger on businessoffashion.com and found it so inspiring. She seems like a super talented woman – I hope to visit this place someday but in the meantime thanks for the photos :)
Beautiful Post and Gorgeous Photos. I’m wondering if I can use a few of the photos and description for my own blog and credit it back to you with your permission (because I did not know about it beforehand). I write a LifeStyl blog (fashion, beauty, food, art, etc.) Check it out and let me know. Thanks.

The Minimalist approach is how I like to dress. However, probably not purchasing too many of these beautiful items due to the cost factor. I find the Totokaelo site to be invaluable in that it shows me styling tricks to these looks that I can aspire to on my own. I love the neutral coloured slim dresses, long or shorter, over cropped black pants /with different types of heavier footwear, black or nude colour.
Thank you, I have bookmarked the site!
I was wondering what Totokaelo means? Or if it doesn’t have a kiteral meaning, where does the name come from? What insoired the title?
Bisoux!!
Magnifique !
Wow it’s so beautiful! I would love to be able to see the store in person one day.
J’adore!

Dallas needs more of this atmosphere in the city.

Hello. I’ve been visiting Totokaelo in Seattle, WA for a few years. It’s a Seattle store. Why not mention that interesting fact?
Just stunning! We need one in L.A.!
If you’re ever in Seattle make sure to stop at their first location – it’s just as gorgeous!
Wow, that’s incredible. Had no idea they had expanded so much. I live in the Seattle area and I had shopped at Totokaelo (then called Impulse) religiously. Jill was always super helpful and sweet. I’m much more frugal now and only stop into Totokaelo to gawk at everything every once in a while, but there was a time when I nearly bought every Y’s by Yohji Yamamoto thing they carried. Purchased on layaway, course. I was only about 19 at the time and that store really defined what I thought was the loveliest clothing in the world.
this shop is amazing! love the plywood shelving and rustic pots and plants in contrast to the simple clothes and minimal interior… stunning. been following their website for some time.
