The New Mini
10 years ago by
Attention please, the new minis are here.
They’re high waisted and make your legs look super long. They’re worn like in the 60’s (just in case you hadn’t noticed, we’re getting hit by a pretty strong 60’s revival) and this is how they’re going to be worn on the street, or let’s say, for women with normal legs and normal life with a lot of commuting included, with a good pair of reassuring tights (ew, metro / taxi seats)
Of course, I love it, and even more worn with a top that’s more covering and a pair of heels that’s not too high – it’s elegant and feminine. But it’s for a sure the kind of style one has to learn to manage. One wrong move and you can look either like a grandma-y or very tacky… Don’t you think?
But I have to say, pretty happy to welcome a “new” silhouette.
Do you like it? Will you try?
It’s so beautiful in the pictures and on young girls with very very long legs…..the models…but attention the”normal”girls watch your steps when you takes the stairs …when you sit…lady like cross your legs…
it’s easier in winter with black legging…at the same time we are going to see some horror in the street like this summer with the shorts….if you are not size 36 max 38 be careful:) !!

I love these mini skirts and even more combined with stocky heels!

I love the idea of stocky heels! I’d also style them with a sweatshirt and and oversize bomber. What do you think?
Hello G

COOL SKIRT

I used to think minis are reserved for very young and verging on eating disorder (the gap!) but having discovered Isabel Marant I’ve changed my mind. If done well they can look nonchalant and effortless. Done badly however…

I love short skirts, but then again, I’ve always loved them – even my taylor comments on how short my skirts are. Very thick tights and a long-ish coat are key accessories for the metro and co.

I love the shape and print of that second mini, so flattering. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a denim mini! Takes me all the way back to my middle school self.

I don’t like minis with stiletto heels. It looks all wrong and there is a risk of looking vulgar. Google pics of Twiggy from the 60s. The shoes have modest heels and suit the mini much more. The heels in the first picture are perfect.
P.S. There is no apostrophe in 60s.
I’ve always loved this silhouette!

Anyone know the designer on the brown suede kitten heeled shoes and the vertical striped blue, red, and black top (looks like Missoni).
Hi Cynthia – the brown heels are vintage Valentino!

I love short skirts! x

I like the look on girls with long and skinny legs like in the pictures. Since my legs aren’t long nor skinny, I’m afraid I’ll have to pass. I’ll stick to my favourite midi skirt!
I keep finding myself tempted to go for this look, but sadly, just don’t have the body type for it (skinny but too short-legged, minis just make it obvious) nor does it work well chasing after little kids (all the bending over – yikes!). It’s great on the right woman.
omgooosh, where are the bags from in the last foto ?
Now I know! TL-180 bags !!!
J’adore les robes!!!

Not a fan. We are not in the 60’s we are in the era of powerful women and beyond your teen, it does not seem to make sense to look like twiggy. I like to feel powerful and confident in my day because strength is beautiful. I prefer a pencil skirt, a fitted sheath dress, cigarette pants…
fabulous !!http://intelligently-fashionable.blogspot.com
i unfortunately don’t have the legs for a mini like this; but all the power to the girls who do!
anything that makes my legs look longer I am down for!

Love the second skirt, the high waist skirt, that I found very sexy :)

I like it on the models. I wish I had their age and miles long slim legs to rock the skirts.
Amazing photos!

I love mini skirts and Ive been wearing them since forever. I’m lucky enough to have good leg genes in the family, so I like to show off a bit and wear a very covering top to balance it out.
Hello!! please can you tell me where the shoes in the first picture are from? I LOVE THEM!!! merci merci :)
I love the idea of wearing a mini with not too high heels. I just bought a mini and needed inspiration to style it. Merci
Love it. Particularly with the slouchy, boyish hoodie!

fan fan fannnnnn, and yes, only with tighs for me but I dont care ’cause it feels great to have long legs
love it! I’m excited to try this look.
I just find it amazing that maxis were for summer and minis are for fall… a bit backwards, no?
Very nice skirts !

My Fantabulous World
Had a 60’s style mini in a bag heading for the salvation army. Have now fished it out and its making a comeback!
Ace post!
I am addicted to mini skirts, it is one of my signature looks, it’s the look that really flatters my figure ! I have a collection of them, in prints, lace, black, leather, color… I usually don’t wear them with very sexy tops or shoes as I find that kind of look too much, instead I like to wear a loose t-shirt, casual shoes with them to achieve a more relaxed, effortless look. but when I go dancing tango, I wear them with 4-inch tango heels, still I go easy with the top to balance it out. So styling the mini is key. what you wear with the mini can totally change the whole look.
I’m always a fan of putting one element into an outfit that takes it in another direction. So these skirts, would look great with birkenstocks, or a really chunky sweater. Especially with skirts like this (that let’s face it, our intention can be to look one way, but sometimes in the middle of the day we realise in a shop window we might not look like these Amazonian godesses!) it’s good to look like you threw it on, not trying too hard, and certaintly not ‘trying’ to look sexy (at least not for those who like the obvious!). I love the new sillhouette but i think we’ve got to throw something a little jarring in there too!
Love the pictures but this style is for girls who have long long legs. Women over 30 will have to avoid this trend
J’adore. J’adore . J’adooooooore ! Vraiment canon !

I have a problem with mini skirts, as they tend to look trashy when worn, by anyone. But these are looking great, something I could see myself wearing.
then it’s a good thing you re not ‘anyone’
I love these silhouettes, my favorite skirt is the second one.
However, it reminds me of one of your summer posts, where you asked: how old is too old to wear shorts? or something like that. I have the same question for these minis: I’m 47, tall with long legs, but am I not too old for this (and feeling sad that I might very well be…)
I love mini skirt!
Have a good day

With opac black tights, yes. But with bare legs, no. I’m 46, need to think about to keep my dignity ;-)
Euuhhhh, c’est très joli,
mais on fait comment pour s’asseoir?
..oh I lived in these 1962-69 ( many from Biba or Chelsea Girl or C & A’s on Oxford St)..and we would have never, never worn them with stilettos which were hopelessly old fashioned & for dinosaur Teddy Girls …we only wore minis with chunky heels ( short or medium height..didn’t matter much ) and in winter with white tights.Yes.. white tights. Never black opaques which were for leftover 50’s beatniks and bare legs were only OK when brown in summer. Bare legs in the winter London or Liverpool of the 60’s…are you mad?
WONDERFUL LOOKS!

J’aime beaucoup!
great post!

I’m latin so clothes that focus on the waist and create an hour glass shape is a hit for me!! BTW- I believe you can have a great hour glass shape at any size, be it a size 0 or a size 10, It’s not a weight thing.
But I agree with Garance, one must thread with care when dealing with shorts hemlines, especially if one has passed the teen years;)
Ciao
Loving the post!
Garance (or someone) can you please tell me what is the brand of bags in the last picture?
I’m obsessed!!! Thanks
Hi Rita, they are from TL-180!

Bonjour a tous
bises!
Yes but how old is too old to wear this?
