Style Story / Apples
9 years ago by
Our recent visit to Apples’ home in Brooklyn felt like a complete escape from winter in New York. It’s a beautiful, light-filled space with tropical accents everywhere. I’m not kidding, she has almost as many plants as pairs of jeans…
And, as Creative Design Director for super cool denim company, Ksubi, that’s a lot! Her style is all about mixing denim with vintage and a few key designer pieces.
1. Ok, it has to be asked, what’s your favorite pair of jeans?
Ksubi’s Slim Straight fit in Albino Bleach! They are my go-to jeans that I can wear year round, and the fit is so comfortable. I like denim that not only looks like denim but feels like old school denim – tough and rigid, and this pair is just that!
2. Jeans or denim shorts?
My friends will laugh at this one because they all know I love a short short!
3. And your favorite non-denim item in your wardrobe?
At the moment, they would have to be my vintage Hawaiian shirts. They were dead-stock from the ’80s. They’re small and fitted, and the prints are one-off. Every time I wear them my mood is fun and happy!
4. Describe your style in three words.
Comfortable, free and playful.
5. How has the move to Brooklyn influenced your style?
Since moving to Brooklyn, I have rediscovered my love for vintage clothing, especially being close to the flea markets they have here during the summer. I really enjoy digging for one-off pieces, and vintage clothes also allows me to dress up in different eras, and this makes it so much more fun. One day I can give off a real ’90s minimal, Jil Sander look then, tomorrow, I can be rocking a jumpsuit that is super ’80s. I like switching it up and dressing up, depending on my mood and vibes for the day.
6. And your designs?
I do a lot of people watching in Brooklyn, on the street, in cafes and at our local bars. Girls here are definitely a step ahead in terms of style, so I get to see what new denim fits the girls are wearing and, more importantly, how they are wearing them.
7. What are your favorite places to shop?
I like Brooklyn flea markets, Stella Dallas and Le Grand Strip for vintage. COS for basics. Barney’s and Dover Street Market for those ‘my husband is going to kill me’ purchases.
8. How do you like to dress up denim?
I like to wear my denim shorts and denim mini skirts even in the winter, and I’ve been dressing them up with fishnet stockings or sheer tights. I also like to wear over the top Bollywood earrings when I wear double denim.
9. One accessory you can’t live without?
My classic Jack Purcell sneakers that were customized by my oldest son Frankie.
10. Do you have a style icon?
I’m really into stylist Julia Sarr Jamois – she incorporates a lot of denim into her looks, so I use her a lot for references.

Love Apples’s style! And I was so impressed whit the “vintage” story. The mix between old and new – unique eco-friendly clothes and statement designer pieces – is exactly what I believe in and what I would like to achieve in my website!

What a cool and stylish lady. Love too, how she wears her hair. An inspiration: clothes sorting strictly by color.
Great interview! Love the pictures! You can never go wrong with denim :)

J’ai a-do-ré cette style story ! On voit vraiment qu’elle a un style dingue, pas étonnant quand on sait que Ksubi est porté par les filles les plus pointues !
