Signature / Tasya
8 years ago by
I can’t help but find Tasya totally intriguing, especially when it comes to her style. She’s an artist and photographer who always pulls together inspired looks that are completely effortless. Sophisticated flats and modern casual suiting in denim, leather, or Japanese cottons.. And her distinctive style has cultivated a uniform of sorts, which Tasya always quite literally tops with her signature: a hat.
I’ve never encountered someone who loves or knows hats quite like Tasya (she even just launched a collection with Stetson, who make the most beautiful brimmed variety!). So, of course, we had to ask her a little more about them during her last visit to New York when she was staying at the beautiful Greenwich Hotel…
How would you describe your style?
Half Japanese/Half Dutch.
You’re known for having a uniform, how did that develop?
I love uniforms. There’s something so unique in their simplicity. Sometimes it’s wonderful to present your outward appearance as simple, so that the intricacies of the mind can really come through. I think one part of me really connects to this aspect of expression, but there’s also another part of me that is more unrestrained and colorful and complex. This is when I like to quiet my thoughts and let others’ visual perception of me do the talking.
More than anything, hats are your signature. Have you always loved them?
I’ve always had an affinity for them. A hat tells a lot about a person. It’s just one more element that conveys an unspoken story that otherwise would have gone untold.

Do you think it’s really impacted the way you pull a look together?
A hat always completes a look, so I would say yes.
Is it a complete rarity to see you without one?
If you know me on an intimate level, it’s not so rare.
What kind of hat appeals to you most? Why?
Anything dramatic. I love the curiosity it creates in its presence.
Are there hats that you would never wear?
I’ll try anything once.
Your love for hats, was that influenced by anyone?
My grandfather on my mother’s side wore one every day of his life. He was a true Dutch gentleman. I had always respected his elegance and exquisite nature that he exuded when I saw him in his hat. Perhaps on a subconscious level I’m trying to emulate him and his sophisticated spirit.
Can you tell us a little bit about your collaboration with Stetson?
We began a dialog last year in regards to collaborating on a hat design for their 150th year anniversary. I was honored to be a part of such an iconic and timeless brand. I wanted to design a piece of art that reflected my artistic pulse and also the pulse of the brand. It had to be powerful and, at the same time, graceful and refined. Something that evoked an unwavering response to time and space. Its lines had to be renowned and grand in stature. With that in mind, I created “The Signature” hat which in turn was the perfect representation of both our worlds combined into one.
And any advice on how to take care of hats, and how to style them?
The more wear and tear the better. Honestly, it gives it – and you – more character.

It’s always interesting seeing how an artist a photographer like Tasya Van Ree abandon herself to other photographer…she share the details with us..but don’t let us see the all pictures..she keep this mystery to herself..i love her work as a photographer…

I officially have such a girl crush on her!! I love her uniform and I’ve never seen anyone pull off a hat like she does!

I am such a fan of her look and especially her hat! The way she combines the classic colours and cuts of the garments with her modern tattoos is fascinating and so stylish.

Bravo !
This is very inspiring for people on journeys to understand their personal style. Someone like me. Stay true to what you feel is you.

Love, love, love the look and hats!
I love her style and like the idea of a “uniform” when it looks like hers. And, Neada, isn’t this post the answer to your dilemma about how to wear the new haircut under a beanie? Seems like one of these stetsons would do the job beautifully!

Thank so so much for introducing such an amazing artist! After I read that , I cried so hard because it hit me, that I loosing myself, trying to get photo/ illustration commissions who are not connected with myself…I’m european, living in the U.S. for 5 years, struggling with the style and being passionate about so many things, that I even confusing myself. Tasya has the same tenderness I have and I adore her work and style. Everything is consistent and you immediately see, who Tasya is and what she feels…thank you for that wake up call and I wish you beautiful girls all the best,
with love
Mia
really I like you so so much Tasya.
