Parkas!

By now I think I’ve established (at least to myself) that I’m a coat freak, but when winter comes after you in New York City, it’s a serious matter. Going out without the right parka, you can literally freeze and feel like your nose is gonna fall, which it might, actually.
I’ve worn my Mr and Mrs Fur for a while now, but recently I also added a classic Canada Goose one (love it) and I’ve been thinking about a Moncler for a while… I like a big one that I can disappear into. I can dress however I want under them (I even wear my purse under the parka, which makes me look like I’m pregnant, but who cares? It’s f#@$%g COLD!!!), they’re like a survivor blanket. It’s the only way I’ve found to stay chic and warm when the winter comes.
I mean, until you get to the bottom of the winter, the part when it’s just too cold, icy and windy and we’re all just layering stuff on ourselves and Duck Booting wherever we go and it’s total style game over. I refuse to even talk about these days.

Bon, il ne fait pas aussi froid à Paris qu’à NY mais une parka, c’est essentiel pour une frileuse comme moi. Le vent ne passe pas, on est bien isolé du froid et de la pluie.
Et en plus, je les trouve plutôt féminines avec les maxi capuches en fourrure.

Juste un petit mot pour vous présenter mes excuses pour mon commentaire du 8 janvier, qui était complètement déplacé. Je vous ai parlé comme je l’aurais pu parler à ma meilleure amie, alors que vous ne me connaissez même pas ! La peur, la tristesse, l’incompréhension, la colère ont parlé pour moi mais se sont trompé de destinataire. Passés ces moments d’idiotie, je m’en veux… Ceci a en tout cas eu le mérite de m’amener à réfléchir sur les rapports que j’entretiens avec le web.

Merci pour ces photos réalistes mais stylées! Vivant aussi sur la côte Est américaine, je rigole doucement quand je vois le stylisme de l’hiver sur certaines pages, pantalon 7/8, manteau ouvert et chic, ballerines pointues. Puis je rentre dans mon déguisement de grizzly (boots Sorel, shearling, bonnet) pour affronter le sel sur la route, le vent, les températures de moins 15…
Indispensable, la parka, mais quid de la volonté d’acheter moins?…;)

La solution… on bouge de NYC pour une destination plus clémente! Moi j’ai choisi Miami tellement plus cool niveau température mais bon c’est vrai NYC est tellement plus exitant/energisant!

The pictures are great..walking on 5 avenue the only label i could see is Canada Goose..and seriously everybody looks the same…in Europe it used to be more Moncler ,and now it’s like in the USA… i would have loved to find something new different…Personally i have a great Parka from DSquared2 which is Warm and beautiful and that is the best for this cold…but i would love to find something new…

Beautiful photos! Parka is always trending, so versatile and fun to wear.
I am a fan of parkas and the like, as well. But in contrast to these photos I also wear warm shoes with them, not Converse and the thinnest possible sneakers.
For me it’s padded skate shoes with warm insoles when it’s dry or warm waterproof boots for when it’s icy/snowy/rainy.
Luckily I bought 2 same pairs of such boots a few years ago and only one is still alive, but I’m already looking for a replacement. You only come across shoes that good every few seasons, I better be prepared!
that’s the way to stand -15°C. The coolness award goes to the silver parka. Could also be worn in spring (without white inlay). Love flexible pieces!

C’est terrible! Je regarde ces photos et je me dis que c’est pas possible. On dirait jamais qu’il fait froid à NY. D’ailleurs, mon amie qui y vit passe son temps à poster sur Facebook des printscreens de son iphone indiquant la température à NY vs celle de Québec (la ville) et, sérieusement, ça me donne l’impression d’habiter Pluton tellement c’est froid chez moi en comparaison. La parka ne tue pas le style. C’est les pantalons de ski pour aller au boulot le matin qui le font!!!
J’habite dans le sud de la France et il ne fait pas vraiment très froid, mais j’adore porter ma grosse doudoune Moncler quand même ! Juste parce que je suis très frileuse et qu’elle est jolie :)

Love the photos. Not so much the fur. Or the down/feather for that matter. A lot of the down is plucked from live birds. I just think people should be informed buyers.
Agreed–very cool photos and excellent styling. Canada Goose does use coyote fur and goose feathers which is a heads-up for those who’d like to know.
Its the only kind of down you want. But to be truthful, fur is still, much, much warmer then any kind of synthetic fabric, or even plain down. I wore a fur coat in the cold spell we had here, and I was totally warm in 20 below and much lower with windchill. if I can afford it, I will definitely get another fur, they loo great, and the animal cruelty excuse is too flimsy in my opinion. Animals are endangered by overpopulation, and their habitat disappearing as it gets converted to farmland and habitation for people. In fact, organic farms are much less efficient, and take up much more room to make less food then regular farms. I would rather see habitat for wild animals saved, then see farm animals become non existent. If anyone ever nags at me about wearing fur, I’m going to ask them if they happen to have any children. People are so short sighted, and self righteous sometimes.

I love parkas but I hate Canada Goose and the big logo, I have never seen anybody who wears it well, they are everywhere here in Montreal .
I think layering is often under-rated on the coldest days of winter. I continue with my fall jacket; it is a grey robe-like waterproof jacket with a hood (I think my dad got it for me from Guess many years ago). I just layer like a pro: heat-tech under-layer, regular fall clothes, a warm hoodie, these socks I got from Costco (the thickest, warmest socks I have ever seen), an ushanka to cover the head and ears (held in place by the hoodie and the jacket’s hood), a warm scarf around the neck and warm gloves, of course. I can walk for an hour in this Canadian winter without feeling cold. The key is not letting any air in, I think. Just tuck everything into each other!
And I just realized this comment got really long and detailed. But it works!
I shamefully admit that I’ve been living in my Mango parka all year long! The padded inside is removable so it’s warm and tight during winter, and loose and comfy during spring and autumn (and the occasional colder summer nights). As you can see, I’m quite the fashion trendsetter… :)

‘Tis the season to bundle up. I like the coats that are thin, down, quilted like the Patagonia brand. Makes long walks much more comfortable and it’s amazing that my jacket keeps me warm down to -7 degrees.

The real reason why Canada Goose is pervasive is because it is the only coat that will truly keep you warm when the weather is below 20F. All fashion coats — even Moncler — fail when the temperature falls below 20F, no matter how much layering!! I agree, Canada Goose is so unattractive and in fact I am not even sure why people wear the shorter versions because their bottom half is still cold! I have the ridiculous-looking one that reaches the floor (“slumber bag” length) and even though I hate the way it looks, it is TOTALLY impervious to cold—you could be naked underneath and be fine in the coldest, windiest conditions! AND it’s the most hassle free, because you don’t need to layer, and you don’t need a scarf or a hat (or gloves if you shove your hands in your pockets)….so you can just be in your cute t shirt and jeans underneath! Even though I would much rather wear a cuter coat, at certain temperatures, Canada Goose wins. Though I am still eyeing that entirely fur-lined Mr & Mrs Furs……
I’ve never been a huge fan of parkas, but after living in Canada you definitely can appreciate owning one. So cozy and warm for the winter season!

Non pas le Canada Goose! Si y’a bien un truc pas classe, c’est ça. Le Hummer du manteau, que tout le monde arbore en noir dans un métro surchauffé, la fourrure qui se balance mollement sous la ventilation. S’il est possible de survivre au froid montréalais sans rentrer dans ce moule, ça doit l’être tout autant à New York. Je suis un peu déçue de le voir mis en avant sur ce blog.
à Genève, pas de neige. Mais les jours où une haute pression règne sur le nord de l’Europe, elle nous envoie un puissant vent du nord. La région genevoise étant bien resserrée entre Jura et Alpes, Bernouillis frétille et ce vent peut atteindre 40 km/heure, voire 70 à 80 par rafales. Il modifie la température perçue de 10 à 15 degrés, fait voler le lac en embruns qui se glacent sur les quais, les barrières et les arbres, c’est très joli, mais vraiment glacial.
Pour ces jours-là, j’ai une parka longue (mi-mollet) que j’ai achetée il y a des années et dans laquelle je m’enveloppe toujours avec plaisir lorsque la bise s’y met en hiver.
Pour les jours “normaux”, j’ai une parka normale, mi-cuisse, une veste en fausse peau, manteau, etc…
Pas de fourrure, pas de plumes. Je trouve le synthétique plus efficace et plus facile à entretenir. Et je n’aime pas les capuchons qui finissent toujours par tomber. Je préfère un snood que je peux allonger sur ma tête.

Dans le sud de la France mais tout de même dans le Massif Central il peut faire très frisquet en hiver, mais je ne me voyais pas du tout porter cet objet imposant qu’est une parka! jusqu’au jour où… ben oui, au marché au puces j’ai vu une petite merveille, je n’ai même pas eu le temps de réfléchir (surtout à ce prix là, évidement) il faut dire que je ne suis pas grande (1m60) mais si je mets un jean slim ou de collants qui affinent les jambes ça fait vraiment joli. Toutes mes félicitations pour ces belles photos, on voit vraiment l’atmosphère hivernale mais émouvante des rues neoyorkines (ça se dit?).

Winter has been quite capricious so far (from -10 C to +12 in a couple of days and vice versa), that I wore my parka maybe 5 times in total. But it truly is a lifesaver, when the temperatures drop below zeros! I love the silver parka from your photos – very cool and chic! Mine is quite ordinary, but warm and cozy. With plenty of space for more layers. And my bottom does not freeze! Yay :)
I am a big parka wearer….coats just do not keep me warm enough. Best parkas ? IMO from the men’s department at
G Star…very technical , full of pockets inside and out and last for ever even if you beat them up, because I find that parka linings tear after a bit. Whereas with G Star’s you zip into them and they become hermetic, no water or wind can come in .

I think Parkas are ugly, like UGGs and Birks. They can immediately dress down an outfit and can make you look like a construction worker if not enough attention is paid. You pick out the most beautiful people to feature on this website and they can look good in a sack. But i see they are necessary in certain climates. Esply, if you live in the mountains, there is no point wearing nice coats out in the wild. But fashionistas in NYC seem to embrace them as well.
So glad i am from Az and i dont need one.

It’s funny to see that one of your subjects you photographed is wearing a Canada Goose jacket. I live in Canada but I have yet to own one or a parka! I should though because the winters here are ridiculous! It’s always nice to see the people you captured play with their winter wear. Because I can find it so difficult to dress stylishly for the winter while staying warm at the same time. xx

Il n’y a pas longtemps j’ai fait un post sur mon humble blog aussi sur les parka dont j’ai un goût immodéré tt comme toi. Les prix sont bien plus légers (40€) et j’en ai de toute marque (Zara soldé, New Look et même C&A) tout ç apour dire qu’à notre niveau on peut aussi acheter des parka sympa.
J’aime aussi en acheter des chaudes, des coupes vents selon le temps de la France qui n’a plus de climat ma bonne dame!!
En tout cas ta parka est SUPPERRRR

Yo I live in a very cold part of Canada, and I prefer Soia and Kyo to Canada Goose. No big ugly logo patches, and they are really warm, sturdy, and have some good extras like zippered pockets and extended inner cuffs to keep your wrists warm.

Moncler is useless. Canada Goose or NorthFace are good, and actually my Calvin Clein down coat is super. But Moncler is only pretty to look at. I bought one for a ton of money a few years ago, and its just not warm enough for Minnesota. Probably in NY it won’t matter. North Face is still the best though. They are so light and so warm, and they are indestructible. North Face may not be all exclusive and posh as the wealthy people brands, but its better made, and a better bargain.
Chère Garance, Cela fait des années que je lis ton blog, que j’adore. Bizarrement, c’est la première fois que je poste un commentaire. Mais comme j’ai grandi en Suisse, je connais assez bien le sujet des parkas pour survivre le froid en style. J’ai eu plusieurs parkas ces dernières années, et finalement j’en ai un peu eu marre des Moncler et compagnie. Elles sont belles, mais pas si classes que ça finalement je trouve. Et il y a quelques mois, j’ai découvert une marque magnifique à Montréal, avec ma soeur qui fait ses études là-bas (le froid Canadien ça tue le froid Suisse, c’est sur). La marque s’appelle Mackage (http://www.mackage.com) et leurs modèles sont simplement parfaits. Le prix est dans la même catégorie que les Canada Goose, mais tu vas voir, c’est autre chose là, elles sont sublimes.

moi je suis très très frileuse et je suis déçue chaque jour des blogs mode qui ne sont pas réalistes ou en tous cas pas à ma portée. moi c’est parka canada gosse ou north face tous les jours et même dessous je dois aussi empiler les couches, mais déjà au mois de novembre…. donc j’attendais avec impatience ce genre de post….. le style quand il fait froid, c’est pas facile…….
Sauf que mettre une parka avec des baskets n’est pas du tout efficace, combo à bannir, sachez-le ;-)

I have a white down Betsey Johnson parka I have been loving the last few weeks. Because it is white I went easy on it last year, but this year it’s been a daily coat. I figure, I can throw it in the wash, so it’s parka game on!
Je n’arrive pas encore à lacher autant d’argant dans une Canada Goose car c’est quand même pas rien pour un habit pas très féminin. En plus le gros logo patché dessus me dérange, ça fait trop sport.
J’ai acheté une doudoune très fine chez Uniqlo que je glisse sous mon manteau et je ne suis jamais sans un Heatech (toujours Uniqlo). Et puis je sors pas beaucoup quand la bise a décidé de tout ruiner…
Mais je rêve toujours de la parka féminine, de bonne qualité, quitte à y mettre le prix.

Je la trouve plutôt cool, j’ai toujours bien aimé cette pièce presque classique, ce qui me dérange un peu plus c’est la neige, ah non la boue, sur les trottoirs qui limite grandement le choix de chaussures :'(

Je ne connais pas les marques de doudounes ou parkas que vous citez :( !!!! C est vrai que je n ai jamais vu de doudounes élégantes, jusqu à tomber sur un modèle Pimkie, assez simple, mais cintrée, matelassée juste ce qu il faut, une ceinture pour souligner ma taille pas si fine que ça, et elle arrive au ras des fesses. Et bin, j en suis gaga, je me sens super sexy dedans !!!! Sinon, les jours de grands froid, quand le mistral souffle dans la Vallée du Rhône, j ai une doudoune courte et fine, ultra chaude, qui peut se porter seule, mais que je mets sous un grand manteau en laine !!!! Et voilà !!!! Et surtout, si vous voulez avoir bien chaud, n oubliez pas de vous couvrir la tête !!!! J ai bonnets, toques, capeline, bérets ….. La chaleur monte, le bonnet garde cette chaleur et vous verrez la différence !!!!!
