Match Point

9 years ago by

Sometimes it seems easiest to just throw on all the same color and you’re out the door. Like black, for instance (everyone is guilty here).

Garance is a major participant of doing just that, too, with, well…white. Ok, so head-to-toe actual colors are tricky, but what’s even more rare is the elusive matching set. As in those ensembles designed to be worn together. Similar to a suit, but not confined to the likes of a jacket and pant, and generally in a stripe or refined print or pattern.

I love how girls are wearing a matchy-matchy set today though. Kamaryn’s look is so feminine with those delicate stripes and sweet wrap tie belt to accentuate the waist. While Jessica’s pinstriped vest and pant combo (plus tee!) is pretty perfect, very much Giorgio Armani meets Annie Hall, meets a t-shirt. And, what I think makes Lizzy’s set work, is that brilliant stark white eyelet!

In fact, they all kind of reflect the whole all-white or all-black ensemble by keeping the set in a neutral color palette. A less-is-more approach (as if that’s revolutionary) But that’s the key! Such a simple trick of the eye to elongate the figure!

What do you think, are matching sets back in?

  • I love these looks and I wear all black all the time. Or grey. Or Navy. That’s about it. As long as it’s not a “suit” as such (hello Dress for Success nightmare flashback) there are lots of fun things that can be done with texture or silhouette. And I’ve always thought monochrome is so elegant.

Lovely photos, especially the first one, which looks like it have been taken just before ate sunset. I usually wear suits to work so I avoid wearing sets off duty- but I can see who it can work.

  • I wear one colour head to tow, frequently: grey (mostly), white, navy but also green and burgundy. NEVER black (and no patterns, I admit). I love the look.

  • Classic look is always in fashion no risk and no fantasy ..just elegant….i personally like to challenge myself with more risky looks…or more sexy ones

  • Very simple, chic and somehow colourful… or maybe it’s because of the backgrounds. Nice photos (and style) like usual, Garance!

  • Funny, I was thinking to myself that “less is more” just this morning…

I’ve always been drawn to “simple, but not plain”, and as I get older, I realize that I always come back to that. My wardrobe is a good illustration of that.

I try to wear no more than 2 colors at once. I love statement pieces (a detail or an item that stands out, a hint of sexy, for ex.). I’ll wear earrings, but no necklace or vice-versa, rings but no bracelet or vice-versa. etc. It’s not really a conscious effort; I just feel myself that way.

I recently purchased a dress from & Other Stories in two colors, one in navy blue and the other in mint green with an Art Deco pattern. It’s a simple wrap dress, very 1940s, but let me tell you, I’ve been getting a lot of compliments, especially with the pattern version of the dress. Apparently, I definitely make a statement. And, I’d bought it for its easy, flowy style.

  • Les ensembles assortis c’est le remède lorsque l’on ne sait pas quoi se mettre ! J’adore !

  • The first outfit is so absolutely beautiful! Oh yes, matching sets are definitely back! And no surprise really. Classic never really fails, never goes out of style.

But I must also comment on the photography. Its chic simple and beautiful. The clothes make the impact hat they do only because of the way that have been photographed!

  • I think the second women did it well. She deconstructed the look using converse sneakers. And dressed it down a little. The first and the last look were too matchy matchy. But from angles, they do look like a dress, so it works.

But a pin stripe suit – very stylish.

All white, all navy, all black, all red…love them. I do white on white a lot in Summer.

Last Summer I got a Michael Kors navy with white circle type print shorts suit. It’s so cool I wish I had more occasions to wear it. If I did the sneakers thing I bet it would look very paired down, but I love it with heels or wedges and a tank for a twist on a Summer party look.

If you are beautiful as these girls are, you can wear all manner of clothing and look amazing and of course the wonderful way you used the light and the moment increases the beauty of the outfit, too…..

  • Been looking for a shorter version of the first outfit. Simple and perfect for summer nights. And really nice touch on the clutch!

  • Très bel article!

  • I love sets. Matching in general just looks so cool. Why not?
