Brie gave us the run down on some killer swimwear options for the summer, but if you’re like me and wondering what you can wear to keep your beach attire versatile and your skin protected from that relentless sun, we’ve got you covered! (Literally). First stop, that face!
I know I know, we aren’t all hat people, but in the summer wearing one is so necessary! Plus, for me, it’s the easiest way to hide my tangled hair. Maybe you were blessed with perfect beach hair but I’m constantly braiding, twisting… anyway, that’s a discussion for another post.
After a little trial and error, I’ve learned that a full brim hat for full coverage of the face and scalp is essential. My tendency for burning my scalp means visors are not an option, which is probably for the best because while some people look very chic wearing them, I look like a tourist.
I have also been noticing that brands like J.Crew and Soleil Toujours are offering a selection of hats with UPF 50 sun protection. UPF stands for ultraviolet protection factor and blocks 98% of those unstoppable UV rays. This should never replace sunscreen but there’s no such thing as too much protection, right?
Next body part at risk for a sunburn – the shoulders! They’re so exposed and always need a little extra tender love and care. My shoulders are usually the first place I burn every summer. But the idea of covering up shouldn’t get you down, I see it as the perfect opportunity to have some fun with a great long sleeved number. Don’t you agree? Also, when that sun starts to set, you’re going to be real happy you brought something easy that helps transition your bathing suit into the cool night.
We played up the colors of Kellie’s bathing suits with complementary colored cover up tops. I don’t know about you, but looking at these pictures has me pretty darn excited for my next beach trip!
Le chapeau en été est très joli, reste à trouver la bonne couleur et la forme idéale, ce qui n’est pas facile !
i love those tan bikini bottoms! :)

Lovely, thanks! I’ve become a [blonde] sunscreen fanatic.
Best sunscreen on a budget: Neutrogena’s entire line. Makes it easy to use, reapply and still feel fresh. Much cheaper than my other favorites: Skinceuticals (tinted face SPF 50 goes on like a dream) and of course Anthelios 60 (simply the best).
The Neutrogena sheer aerosol spray 100 SPF goes on clear and smooth. It’s in every drug store, so I picked some up in Tulum Mexico and succeeded in the first ever beach vacation with no sunburn :)
The Neutrogena non-comedogenic ‘pure’ line sheer face sunscreen 50 SPF is tiny and at $10 i’ve got one in every purse and beach bag. Wear it under makeup daily.
Any other favorites?
I love these suggestions! Thank you so much. I am always looking for a well priced SPF. xx Elle
I recommend the brand ‘Vision’ – it’s affordable, non-sticky, non-greasy, non-smelly :) And available in regular drugstores (at least here in the Netherlands).
Now I’m running into a different problem when it’s beach weather… How to maintain the bikini line in a smooth hairless state. Well, hairless is not the problem, but ingrown hairs are! I’ll gladly take recommendations on this! It’s a problem that I didn’t have in my 20’s, but with the years the hairs are creeping out! Ack!
I readily admit to loving hats, but I’m always a little nervous that I’m going to look ridiculous in a full brimmed hat. Unfortunately, just like you, I have learned that my scalp burns very easily. I’ll have to give full brimmed hats another try. Thanks for all your tips!
Le chapeau Zara est canon! Merci pour cette jolie sélection!
Belle journée, bises

Great tips. I love a good hat when I’m in the sun as it not only protects my face but stops me from getting sun stroke when my head gets too hot x

I’m all for sun protection! A hat actually helps the whole body to feel cooler.

Chapeau, grande chemise cover all, spf 50 et un parasol, absolument indispensables pour aller a la plage en Floride. Le soleil y est meurtrier ! Tres joli maillot blanc et citrons. :-)
Great outfits! Thanks for the inspiration x

I love these pics. The model is not skinny, yet gorgeous, so you don’t feel “fat” and stressed looking at her. She looks like a real woman. Thanks for choosing someone else than anja or karlie or…
Hi
The link for the straw hat is wrong in the french version. It’s related to sun cream.
Lucie
Hi Lucie,
Thank you for your comment. Are you speaking of the Soleil Toujours link? They are the brand that makes the UPF protection hats Elle mentions in the post, you should be able to find them on their website through that link. Hope this helps! x Natalie
Great post dear!

You are very beautiful :) <3
