The hair, the eyes, the brows, the face. It was a total look at Marc Jacobs when the beauty met the clothing. Backstage Guido Palau said it best when he told us, “The whole thing in the end is like an illustration come to life. Everything matches.”
Face: “We based the makeup on the colors of the fabrics and the textures of the fabrics. The makeup overall is very matte.”
Eyes: “The idea is to really accentuate the eyelid. It’s kind of like the Greek statutes.”
Brows: “In Vogue covers from the 60s when the hairdresser would match the eyebrows to the hair color. I always loved that. It has a very soft feeling to it.”
Hair cut: “The shape was inspired by old Jessica Lange pictures, Polly Mellen with that bob. That simple idea of American hair.”
Hair color: “We wanted shades of hair where you couldn’t quite see what the color was. They are almost old lady colors. The idea is not for them to be electric.”
I think about my makeup in relation to what I’m wearing but really treating it like an accessory feels fresh. I might not wear blue eyeshadow with a blue shirt (although thanks to the 12 color eyeshadow palette I owned in middle school, I did that very well), but I do ask whether or not a cat eye will go with that dress or if a red lip is too much with that leopard print coat.
I am looking at my nails on my keyboard as I type this and wondering if they really accessorize my plaid pajama pants…
Do you look at beauty as an accessory to your look or does it stand on it’s own?

the portrait is great but the make up is a little bland… :P

Love the photo!! The makeup is beautiful, very elegant and natural. I really like the headband and the color hair!

I definitely look at make up in relation to my look. Like you, I will not wear a red lip if it over powers my outfit or if it may make me look crazy and like a circus clown because I chose to do a cat eye and wear a leopard print coat. But I guess it is what you are comfortable with. I have always been toned down make up and accessory wise. Things have to blend for me. They have to relate or I feel like I cannot relate.
Love the choice of preferring a matte skin and love the eyeshadow colors!

My make up matches my look I think, at the moment I sit with my sweat pants on my couch, so no make up at all. And sometimes I really like to wear my red ballerina flats and red lipstick, I found the perfect match :-) But besides that, I wouldn’t know that I match my make up to my outfit, it’s more a mood thing and sometimes I even like to wear quite a dramatic make up together with just jeans and t shirt, so I guess with me, there are no rules….. xxx
I love how you write every article! Really interesting and beautiful <3 I love Marc

Well, of course, this was the best. No one can deny it.

Salut,
J’adore <3 !
Bye, Laëti
gorgeous look ! and good question……..
the older i get , the less make up I want. It is just part of my DNA now……
I only make a difference with make up for night or for day.
I like makeup when you cannot tell that you are wearing make up
just a clear beautiful skin with some BB cream and some argan oil to make it shine all day( i do not like dry matt skin )
I like to make my eyebrows one shade darker and comb them well
and a smudge of whatever eye grease i find , or a dark eye pencil inside my eyelids for the night look.
and maybe a smudge of lip tint , but at night only
I stopped wearing blush and mascara years ago
I am happy that the article on yesterday’s T Magazine on Phoebe Philo was called The Invisible Woman.
that is what i want to be….an invisible woman , and to achieve that : rule # 1 : no apparent make up .

I know it’s fashion, but it just makes sense — yes? For fashion week you wouldn’t want to do a look that distracts from the clothes. So doesn’t playing down the makeup ensure that the focus stays on the clothes — or that picking up some of the elements of the clothing design (matte, colors, etc) just create a cohesive look that allows the clothes to stand as hero? It’s very beautiful and the neutrals provide welcome relief from neons of seasons past.
J’ai envie d’un pyjama ecossais !
Such an overall fabulous look! Oh, to have that thick shiny hair!!

I wrote about the new “invisible woman ” here :
http://www.fashionsphinx.com/the-invisible-woman-the-quiet-power-dressing-2014/
I think that all the nude/natural/raw themes of this week’s fashion shows in new York are related and reinforce the need for some women to be “invisible” in order to feel powerful

I love what they were going for, the collection looked exactly like living illustration!
Amazing!
Love the makeup!!
A masculine strength on an ultra lady-like woman.

XOXO
Beautiful shoots! Loving this! :)
