When it comes to summer maintenance beauty… the bikini line is little bit of a hairy topic.

Okay sorry, sorry!! I couldn’t resist! But really.

Remember that scene in the Sex and the City movie, where Samantha is appalled at Miranda’s lack of care in that region while on Carrie’s “honeymoon” in Mexico? Samantha says to Miranda, upon sight of her bikini line, “Jesus honey, wax much?”

I always think of that scene when swimsuit season rolls around. Now, what you do with what is under your bikini is one thing (remember what Cameron said?), but I’m talking about just your bikini line area. We go months without thinking about it and suddenly, it hits 90 degrees and it’s becomes the center of attention.

Here at the Studio, we have tried every approach to bikini maintenance and here is what we think…

Disclaimer: It might get a little graphic down below ;)

Wax: I’ve been getting Brazilian waxes religiously every three weeks for just over a year now and I do it year round. Before that I had always shaved, but would get annoying rashes/the hair would grow back too quickly/I didn’t like how scratchy it was, all of that. I have to admit though, that I hate the pain of waxing. I have really strong hair down there (or so the estheticians always tell me), so I’m always red for several hours afterwards, and on a few occasions I’ve even experienced bruising. After 24 hours though, having smooth skin with no hair for a good two and a half weeks makes it worth it for me. – Carolyn

Shaving: IIf my legs are any indication of what the situation is like down there… I have three words to help the visual: thick, dark, fast. I’m Italian. I wax occasionally but having to wait 3-4 weeks for everything to grow in before I go for my next wax is impossible if I plan on getting in a bathing suit. So during summer months I resort to shaving. It hurts, every once in a while there’s an ingrown or some razor burn, but with the rate my hair grows back in (overnight) I don’t have much of an option. – Emily

Laser: My friend told me about getting laser for, well, down there, nearly 5 years ago. She said she’d been doing it for a long time and loves it, more than waxing and shaving combined. My hair grows wicked fast so shaving is annoying and my tolerance for pain is mild but not strong enough for a wax. With laser (thank you Groupon!) you go every 2 weeks for about 8 weeks and you’re pretty much set for the summer. The key is in the planning, since you have to space out treatments. If you’re doing it to get ready for summer, start early. – Brie

Laser + Shaving: I did laser a long time ago and it worked super extra wonders. I’m pale with dark hair so I’m the perfect target for it. It literally changed my life because my hair would rebel against any type of waxing or epilating and I would spend the summer ashamed of the red spots the ingrown hairs would create. It never happen again with laser.

Of course, after a few years, it started growing back sparsely (but very little actually) and for these few lost causes, I just shave. But believe me: as soon as I have time I’ll go laser them again. Actually, I’d like to laser my own body. Just kidding. But my legs and my underarms ? Hell YES. – Garance

A little bit of everything (except laser): I’ve tried almost everything. I used to get waxes, but my skin is ultra sensitive, so the results were less than stellar– if anyone has tips on a good wax for super sensitive, let me know! Shaving irritates me as well (gosh, I’m high maintenance) but luckily, I have pretty minimal/fine hair in that area. When necessary, I grab my tweezers… – Alex

What do you do? Nothing? Everything? Does your routine change for summer?

Also, has anyone tried the at home laser (we haven’t tried it yet)? Is it safe?

PS: These bikini bottoms are by Mikoh!

  • I just shave – I tried waxing and I went for the full Brazilian but I couldn’t handle the whole thing. When there is a tiny little Spanish woman pulling out your pubic hairs, you really start to reconsider the choices you’ve been making.

  • Funny !!! I was thinking at the same scene in Sex and the City this morning while reading the ELLE , special bikini . Shaving !!

  • I’m a bit of a freak because I hate shaving, waxing, laser – everything. I don’t mind my hair though. It only seems to bother other people, when they notice. I got myself a one-piece suit a few years ago from L.L. Bean. It has a cute skirt over the bottom part so now no one has to be put off by seeing my “nasty hair” when I’m in a bathing suit!

I am the middle of the road girl. I use the hair removal cream. Yes, it is messy, yes you have to just lay still for 5+ minutes and then hop in the shower to get the goops off, BUT it takes a while for it to grow back, and I can easily maintain it with a razor afterwards. No ingrowns or redness, clean and smooth as a whistle and I just aply some topical benadryl if it starts to itch!

  • Laser sans aucun doute. Ça a changé ma vie.

  • A so called “home laser” is not really laser but IPL – intense pulse light. I had 3 sessions with real laser (LightSheer Duet) and maybe 30% of hair grew back for now. Skins looks great – no red spots.

Poor electrolysis is always the least popular kid in school! BUT, it’s absolutely the best, and I really encourage everyone to give it a shot. First of all, it’s not any more painful than laser or waxing (and in some cases, less so), it doesn’t cause pigmentation issues or increased hair growth the way laser can, and it’s the only method that is actually permanent. I’ve tried laser and the results were good for a season, but the hair is now growing back in force and I’m back to my electrolysist to take care of it once and for all. I have fabulous women that I see in New York and Los Angeles (I haven’t plucked my eyebrows or shaved my underarms in years, thanks to them) who use the latest technology, are as gentle as possible, and will give you realistic expectations about how many treatments an area might require.

  • Lindsay June, 5 2014, 1:19

Allison, where do you go in New York? Thank you!

  • Allison June, 9 2014, 7:13

Lindsay, I see Yuki at New York Electrolysis: http://www.electrolysisny.com/index.html. She’s very sweet, gentle, and she works super fast!

  • carolyn,

  • I have dark hair and have regrowth a day after shaving and less than a week after waxing, plus the red bumps, bruises and ingrown hair. The amount of planing that went into the timing of how to deal with my bikini area every time I went on vacation or to swim at the gym was insane. This year I started getting electrolysis on my bikini line and am so happy. Hair by hair and its gone permanently. Its less painful than waxing and those technicians can clear a forest faster than you would believe.

DIY sugaring! I make my own sugar wax (I learned how on YouTube) and use it to remove all hair-down-there. It’s natural, it’s not as painful as waxing (which I can’t imagine doing on myself), and the results last for 2-4 weeks. Oh and also, it’s super inexpensive.
    The recipe:
    1 cup of sugar
A few drops of lemon juice
    1 teaspoon of sea salt
    About 5 teaspoons of water

Put all ingredients in a pan and heat on a low flame, stirring constantly until the mixture turns clear. Keep stirring until the clear color changes to light amber. (This takes about 8-10 min.) Next, pour mixture into a baking dish (like the kind you’d use for brownies) and use a spoon to gather all of the wax into a ball. As it’s cooling, you’ll see the wax hardening. Handle the wax with moist hands, otherwise it can get a little sticky. Knead the wax in your hands until it’s the consistency of tough chewing gum. Pull off the amount of wax you’ll need for now, and wrap up the rest in plastic wrap and leave it in the fridge until next month! Refer to a YouTube video to see how to actually do the waxing part. It’s super easy once you get the hang of it.

  • donnah June, 5 2014, 7:06

Sugaring sounds interesting. Do you think it is a good alternative for sensitive skin? I love to swim and find my skin gets very sensitive with other methods and swimming make that worse.

  • If waxing is your mode of de-hairing, then you have to go to Dyanna if you’re in NYC. They are the best!

  • LASER! it is an investment of money, time and pain, but you gain freedom. totally worth it and useful also after the bikini season!

  • I loved it!

  • I never understood how one can wait all this time for hair to grow out before waxing. Maybe it is just me because my hair don’t grow that fast, so i usually just wax before a beach vacations so i don’t have to worry about it at all and shave the rest of the time.

  • God bless the boy cut bikini short. No shaving, waxing, layering or other painful/horrible thing necessary.

  • I chose laser for legs & bikini line – once in a while a few hairs pop up & must be dealt with but it’s very manageable. One thing I’ve noticed with laser (they don’t tell you this part) is that my legs are drier looking than before so I have to constantly moisturize. What about you? Do you notice that?

The skin is dryer for a while but it will pass :)

  • Sugaring for sure- I have done both waxing and sugaring, and have had much better results with the sugar. Not as painful during the actual process, and very few ingrown hairs. When I waxed/shaved I would get horrible ingrown hairs and have not had that problem with sugaring.

  • Alexandra June, 5 2014, 12:34 / Reply

  • I used to wax but have very sensitive skin and would get terrible in-growns. So it’s back to shaving. However, read on for some tips and products that really helped me as a waxer and now as a shaver.

Here’s a little post I wrote about my unfortunate entrance into the world of waxing…and subsequently finding a great salon, with different waxes for different areas. If you’re in LA, this salon is in Burbank – if you work near the studios like I do it’s convenient.

Also, I don’t wax or shave without this product. They have creams too, but using this roll on just after shaving or even in any moment you feel that burn / itch / bump coming on after waxing or shaving will save you a lot of discomfort. And it’s eligible for Amazon Prime if you need it ASAP!

  • NOTHING.

I shave my legs and under my arms, although erratically, so I am indeed contradictory, but there’s something about the bikini line thing that just makes me pissed off. I’m female and human and of a certain age, and I don’t want to pretend I’m not. I’m sorry if it makes others uncomfortable, but that’s just too bad.

I’m claiming the human animal part of all this……

Has anyone tried sugaring? My aesthetician does it. It’s like waxing but better for sensitive skin, and you don’t have to have as much “outgrowth”. And I don’t think it hurts nearly as much as waxing. Plus
there’s something sweet (ha ha) about using sugar “down there” :)

  • I have super sensitive skin and I go and use a hard wax. I hurts, but I never have any problems afterwards with rashes or pains, and the in grown hair situation is almost non existent.

  • Margot June, 5 2014, 2:13 / Reply

Shaving works just fine for me. If you don’t get super close you don’t get the ingrown hairs, and who’s looking? Also to exfoliate a day or two after you shave helps to prevent ingrown hairs. It’s the only part I do shave. All else is all natural. My hairy legs and armpits are a point of pride for me–a statement saying you know what to the patriarchy. Also, I’ve been thinking of board shorts, hipster bottoms, or a classic 50’s one piece for a suit option that leaves that area covered. Tre Chic and no troubles at all–think Marilyn Monroe. P.S. my husband loves my hairy legs. The hair has been there so long it’s very soft. When I would shave they were always spiky. Also he loves my mind, self respect, and my politics. I’m available for a photo shoot if you want. :) I’m stunning.

  • I personally have invested in a Me Smooth by Elos at home laser hair removal device.
I chose this one because it is the only one I think that is FDA approved for even black skin, and even the face, and I have a dark complexion.
It was about $350 but it’s working great.
They advertise that 7 sessions will get you rid of unwanted hair…
Well, I have dark skin and black tough hair, so I already knew 7 sessions wouldn’t do it.
I’ve been doing 1 session a week for the last…20 weeks!
It takes me about 30 minutes each time.
As of today, I have almost no hair left on my legs (and they are way smoother, so you can barely feel them), same with the armpits.
The bikini is a little tougher though, but I can see a real difference, probably about 65% less hair than before.
I keep shaving in the meantime, to stay “perfect”, plus you have to be shaved before you laser, so that the light can get directly to the bulb of the hair.
It’s not painful at all, and I never got any burn or dark spot.
Overall I am very happy with the devise, as, as I said, I already know I would have to have a lot more sessions.
I think that I will need about 5 to 10 more sessions and then I will be totally good.
Plus I like that if the hair grows back a little at some point, I have the devise at home and can touch up as much as I want.
I think that it is WAY less expensive than instituts sessions, you just have to be consistant and do it once a week, but again, it is only a 30 minutes commitment, versus driving back and forth to the salon!
I would definitely recommend this method :)
    Helene.

Me Smooth is not laser but IPL and, according to my beautician it’s not permanent :) It just slows down regrowing.

Laser was a game-changer for me, I can’t express how happy I was with the results- incredibly effective in removing hair and a definite farewell to the ingrown hair and irritations. I did it only twice years ago (with more then 6 months apart, the first one worked so well that there was nothing in the area to be lasered before that) and the situation is still very smooth. I’ll go once more to get rid of few hairs that had appeared since- in the meantime, I shave them.

I’m from Brasil, and also have super sensitive skin when it comes to waxes. I did laser some years ago, and now shave my arms and legs, and do what you call Brazilian wax at the bikini area every three months. My skin used do bruise almost every time with commom waxes, now I only use a homemade wax made of pure honey and lemmon juice, I don’t know in New York but this wax is very popular and easy to find here.

  • I have tried soft wax and hard wax and nothing is less painful or works better than sugaring. Here’s a bit of an explanation for you: http://hairremoval.about.com/od/sugarwaxing/a/sugaring101.htm. It works so well and eliminates ingrowns, plus your hair takes way longer to grow back. I’ll never go back to waxing!

    Board shorts. As in surfing.
Super cute, one never has to tug at them, and the modest bottoms paired w. a skimpy string bikini top keeps a sexy look fresh never tacky.

Laser, supplemented with occasionally shaving or waxing is what I’ve settled on. It’s a good combination for someone who is lazy with sensitive skin. I, too, am one of those people with crazy strong (per the aestheticians), dark hair. I did three sessions of laser (a rather modest bikini only) and it got rid of 75% or so. That’s enough that I can deal with shaving occasionally or waxing if I feel like having more gone. The big benefit of lasering is that it really cut down on the number of ingrown hairs I was getting, which was super painful, and I really can go a very long time without doing anything. (I’ve followed the same approach with pits and legs.) In all, I wish I had gone the laser route years ago, and with all the Groupons and other deals, there’s no real financial impediment.

I shave. I hate it, but I haven’t yet gathered the courage to do anything else.

The real question, though – do you go to a salon for a bikini wax? Seriously? Isn’t that like – mortifying and awkward and horrible? Like ten times worse than visiting a gynecologist? Or do people get used to it? It it so common in New York to get everything done, from haircuts to pedicures to whatnot, that waxing is just a normal day? This has always been my biggest concern with waxing.

  • Stephanie June, 10 2014, 10:28

It’s really not that bad! It’s a little awkward, but we all have vaginas (sorry, G, that’s my chosen word) and you’re done pretty quickly. I was really nervous and apologetic the first time I went in my early 20s but the estheticians seem to not care. If they don’t mind doing it, I don’t mind getting it done! :)

Margot, yes it is awkard at the salon, because you are naked and in the “frog” position, let’s be honest. I know some women can’t even imagine doing that. But once you’ve started, I feel like shaving seems really old-fashioned, your hair gets harder and doing it everyday no way!.. you get addicted to waxing… you should try it ;)

  • It’s so funny you posted this exactly this morning as I finally decided to switch to waxing and had an appointment today! So now I am convinced after reading your post to do laser next time. Although waxing is WAY better than shaving, just not as convenient and not as …shall we say private!

Men have it so much easier!
Father’s day is soon , why not offer your man a spa day, with waxing????

I do a sugar paste. It’s like waxing, you go once a month and it hurts, but it’s way better for my sensitive skin. When I used to wax, the hair would grow back a bit earlier and I would have red, hurting skin “down there” for about 2-3 days. With sugar paste my skin is only a little more sensitive for like an hour or two. And it’s 100% natural. I highly recommend it to anyone.

However, as soon as I have enough money for a laser, I’m going for it.

  • Meagan June, 5 2014, 6:35 / Reply

Sugaring! I used to wax and it hurt for days after; ever since I started sugaring, it takes longer to grow back and way less pain. Plus it’s all natural so no chemicals.

NYMag just did an article on someone trying the TRIA laser, it should work. The only thing you need is $500 and the strength to go through with all of it.

And there’s always a Groupon/Lifebooker deal….Lasering is the best! Just only do the bikini line, in case you want hair someday (Hello, Cameron…)

I understand the need for shaving and waxing but WHY do young women feel the need for a Brazilian – pre-pubescent look? Is the porn industry to blame for this unnecessary pressure?

  • Lorraine June, 6 2014, 9:24

yes you’re right good thinking – and at the same time I like when there is not much hair… when it’s neat & clean

  • Lorraine June, 6 2014, 9:26

I forgot to mention : I hate full Brazilian but like what we call metro ticket (small rectangular)

  • Laser….Love it! Under arm and bikini. Worth every penny (ok and face. WTH about hair ever where but where you want it?!)

  • Marie-Charlotte June, 6 2014, 1:51 / Reply

  • i have found that doing a close trim with a beard trimmer or clippers is the best method; no pain, no in-growns, no costly spa appointments, and the only ones getting close enough to notice the light stubble (your girl friends, male partners, or the elderly people at the pool…) couldn’t care less anyway! i swim several times a week as a form of exercise and used to go mad trying to figure out how to make it to the pool on only the days that my bikini line was a) hair-free, and b) not fraught with redness/in-growns from shaving & waxing…which was never…and that’s no way to live. bonus: by trimming, the option of going full bush is always there. to forever eliminate the possibility fully expressing our feminine sexuality due to lasers, or Brazilians seems so unfortunate to me.

  • amanda June, 6 2014, 4:12 / Reply

Luckily I just grow a mohawk so I trim it with scissors or occasionally get someone to clipper it for me…

  • Virge DT June, 6 2014, 4:18 / Reply

  • I’m also the type with light skin and a lot of dark, thick body hair – funnily enough everywhere except on my head, where I have thin reddish brown hair… I use a combination of shaving and epilator. Which leads to pretty much the same results Garance described above. My mum offered to pay for laser hair removal when I turned 18 10 years ago. But I went there and was so creeped out by the whole thing that I didn’t go through with it. My ultimate goal in life is to get so comfortable in my own body that I would be perfectly fine walking around butt-naked in my full hairy beauty (in these scenarios I’m imagining myself with a lot of flowers in my hair). But I’m not there yet, social conventions and ridiculous beauty standards are still holding me back. But it’s nice to have goals in life ;)

  • I’m dark skinned with thick curly hair so always get ingrown hairs from shaving and laser is pretty useless as I’m not the ideal candidate.
I wax my bikini&underarms every month (I always feel skinnier after all my hair’s off! Probably just my wild imagination…) and exfoliate every single day with a salt or sugar scrub, then I follow with tend skin or priva shave after showering and then with AHA cream. Since starting this regime 6 months ago I’ve never had another ingrown hair. And trust me, they were real bad. I used to have to apply prescribed ointment and take antibiotics.

  • princessglee June, 7 2014, 1:23

Checked out Priva Shave on line. Sounds very promising and must try it. Thanks!

  • Chloe P June, 6 2014, 7:14 / Reply

  • I use a combination of the Lumea from Phillips (wonderful for legs, underarms and even mustache!) for the Bikini line I did the Soprano laser that works in any kind of skin tone and hair! Go for it!

  • Haven’t you tried sugar paste? It is similar as wax but the sugar doesn’t stick to the skin -only the hair so it doesn’t irritate sensitive skin, it actually is antibacterial.
Once I did that at the salon I would never use wax again – it’s really bad for the skin!
The pain is smaller and after sugar paste you have silk skin for 3 weeks.
    Best for me :)

I shave with man’s blades. They work amazing on me. Also, technique is important when shaving.

  • Lorraine June, 6 2014, 9:18 / Reply

  • Wax! always, but ingrown hairs are a big problem

  • princessglee June, 6 2014, 10:30 / Reply

I used to get a Brazilian wax every so often, oh the pain, the pain. Then I moved and had to find someone else to do it. I can’t just have anyone down there so I never really found anyone. In the meantime my hair stopped growing in as thick as before. I started shaving in the shower everyday and I make sure I loofah the area. Afterwards I use Tendskin to prevent ingrown hair that causes ugly shaving bumpps when you have tightly curled hair. It works.

  • Tweezers?TWEEZERS???? You must be the luckiest woman ever to be able to maintain with tweezers! My nethers could give the amazon a run for its money!

I use a pair of small scissors to trim things down and then use a razor to clean up the edges. Super sensitive skin plus I don’t like the feeling of being completely bare.

  • Girls, how can you NOT think about it in winter?
Do you never take clothes off in front of a man?

    Kisses, Patricia

  • TWEEZERS???

    (!!!)

    (Ouch)

I some combination of Veet and shaving, though it’s all pretty haphazard, I’m not proud to say.

  • I really like my at-home laser. The results are noticeable, even if you have to keep it up for a while. I have the Silk’n Flash and Go and it has done fantastic job. I am super pale with very dark hair, so I am the ideal candidate, but I highly recommend it. I have to shave a little, but it’s such a relief not to have to be worried about it every day.

  • I use epilator for my legs, it saves so much money and i like it because it can be done every time you’d like and at your home. I think it leaves red spots, but after some sun, you can’t notice. For bikini line, i always do wax. It’s painful, goddamnit! And you have to plan. Having lots of dark hair, i am under stress when the time for bare legs comes.
Have you thought how frustrated and involved in this( against )evolution of hair removal/maintenance procedure we are? It puts a shame on those who choose not to do it, which is totally legit. It puts shame on those who do it, but maybe missed it on some occasion for being low maintenance or those who go through a lot of pain.
What about guys? Have you met those who hate women being hairy, or those who are hairy themselves and don’t care, or those who like it smooth down there while they have the opposite, so like Samantha says: i feel like i’m flossing!

  • Guillermin Anna June, 7 2014, 5:15 / Reply

Electrolysis! It hurt like hell and took months (years)?

    But it’s NEVER grown back.

Electrolysis does it work on blond hair ??????
Please blondes do not have more fun, they can t get rid of their hair
    They are cryimg

  • Allison June, 18 2014, 10:47

Yes, electrolysis absolutely works on fine, blonde hairs! They go follicle by follicle, and it doesn’t matter the type of hair.

  • Roxanne June, 8 2014, 10:48 / Reply

  • Cassidy June, 8 2014, 11:45 / Reply

Sugar waxing is great on sensitive skin. The wax gets pulled toward the hairline instead of against it.

  • dasjenige June, 9 2014, 2:07 / Reply

I would love to get unwanted hair lasered off, but I have light and thin hair, which is not a good combination for that; and I hate the frequency of shaving required, the smell of a depilatory cream and the pain of waxing/sugaring/threading. So once I discovered an electric epilator at the age 16, I’ve never been more content :) my favorite is the latest by Braun, cordless, can be used underwater (less pain), grabs even the shortest thinniest of hairs, and it allows me to go without any additional maintenance for a month in winter and 2 weeks in summer!

  • WAXING!!!! Our zinc oxide cream wax is hypo-allergenic and almost painless. Redness on the skin dimishes in several hours and you are beach/pool ready the next day. With regular waxing the hair eventually grows sparser and thinner. I wax myself every month (I’m an esthetician). Exfolliating regularly with a gentle sugar scrub or rough washcloth helps with ingrows (just do it before receiving a wax treatment). Epilators can cause ingrowns and encapsulated hair follicles that need then to be removed by a dermatologist.

  • NOTHING – RIEN

I’m totally OK with my body hair, especially on my genitals. I’ll usually trim it a little with scissors so it’s not bushy, but that’s it. No pain and no waste of money…

  • Shantell June, 15 2014, 1:14 / Reply

Hard wax is best for sensitive skin.
It does not attach to the skin, only the hair. So no bruising or tugging. Just the hair root will be removed,
I didn’t know until only recently!

  • Noe Dennis June, 25 2014, 5:44 / Reply

I’ve tried on wax pretty recently, after it razor and creams, but about wax first thing crossed my mind was – will it age my skin faster? – and I mean faster than everything else. If you have an answer and that answer is YES I’ll change my method ASAP

(oui bon, les références ……. i know ! )

  • kbrooke June, 21 2016, 8:32 / Reply

I went back to shaving (bikini line only!) because it’s convenient, fast, I can do it whenever I need to, and I bruised from waxing. I also started using Tend Skin last year (can’t remember where I read about it) and it’s miraculous. Apply to dry skin morning and evening and no red bumps, no ingrown hairs, no itching! And trust me this WAS a problem.

  • astrid June, 22 2016, 4:59 / Reply

Sugaring!!! So much less painful than waxing during the process and my skin is only irritated for like 2-3 hours. Plus you can already go to sugaring with a small hair length!
    Really worth a try :)
