the-hand

11 years ago by

I’m doing the unthinkable… I’m showing you my hands!!!

Well, let’s be clear. This is only my left hand.
Because I will never, and I mean NEVER show you my right hand….

Scott says that he can’t see a difference between my two hands, but that’s men for you.

I see the difference: My right hand is thicker, stronger, and my fingers are a little twisted from writing and I have a scar on one of my fingers. At the same time, my left hand, the lazy one who can’t even hold a fork properly, is a little more ready for the spotlight.
At least I hope you think so too.

Okay.

——

The reason I’m showing it to you today is because I want to talk to you about a micro miracle.

I was doing a photoshoot on Thursday (Where I was the model again. I’ll tell you about it later. Yeah, noooooooo, what happened to fashion? What happened to the world? Why doesn’t Elite just give me a call already?)

So I’m on a shoot and the manicurist is reaching for my hands, and I make her promise not to polish them because my nails just can’t take it. It makes them split and break and fall into utter ruin.

My problem, you see, is that I am a descendant from a noble family of nail ridges. Yeah, nail ridges… Those ugly lines that make your nails look like corrugated iron. Yeah, I’ve had those since I was 12, like my mother, like my grand-mother, and like my great-great grandmother before her.
Thanks guys.

And that’s why the girls at the nail spas have a field day with polishing mine, rub rub rub until the nail is nice and shiny… But unfortunately, they are as thin as Rizla+ paper. All you have to do is wait for the polish to go away for them to be totally ruined.

So back to my destiny of being an internationally renowned top-model, the nail person looks at me with a big smile and gets to work.

I see her put some sort of not so pretty matte polish on them and she says, “Ridge filler! For the lines!”

I smile, but I’m not believing it.

It’s only when it finally dries (and that I am standing by the catering stand, doing what I like to do most on shootings = eating all the catering) that I take a look at my hands and realize there isn’t a single ridge. I get back to marathon mode in the makeup trailer and can’t find my nail person, who has left with all her magic products.

Now. I’ve been looking all over for the brand of the ridge filler. I’ll find it. I’ll tell you all about it.

(Okay, so truth is that I’m sure most of you know a million good ridge fillers and that I’m getting to the ridge filling scene three years late… But send me your favorite brands!!!)

——

PS: Even if I always push my left hand in the spotlight, deep down inside, it’s my right hand that I love. I like what it says about my life and my work. I like how strong it is. But as soon as it comes time to show a hand, I’m pulling out my left! Get out there you lazy left hand, go!

What about you? How do you like your hands? Do you have a favorite one?

  • You are sooo funny Garance. And I love this invisible mani:)

  • i know what you mean: i call my left hand my girl hand :)

    http://lilaesthete.wordpress.com/

  • My two hands are exactly the same, maybe a slight difference but not much. My nails is the only part of my body that people admire, they are strong and beautifully shaped, sorry i can not helps there Garance. Best nail varnishes are boots 7, revlon and rimmel, sometimes the cheaper the better, trust me I have tried them all xxxx

  • funny, I notice lately that my right hand is looking more used as well. The left hand is soft and beautiful and the other just dry and ugly. I think it’s like you saying – it does far more job than the left one, so no surprise there. :/ what can we do is – put some cream and masks on and on!

    all best!

  • Ahhh… lazy left hand! We`re the same! :)

  • I want to know the name of this product too! I NEED IT!

    http://theduckattitude.blogspot.it/

  • Your hand and the camel colour and the greige… it all looks very French and Parisienne-ish :)
I’m more of a right-hand-giver, not because my left one is that much worse… but there is a huge scar on my wrist on top there, it’s really not pretty.
And I’m always so ashamed if my manicure is terrible and old :)

  • GARANCE !

well, both OPI and mavala have those ridge filler…. and both brands are pretty great and not that expensives…. just sayin’

I have small hands for my proportions, with short, stocky fingers. I’ve always admired long slim hands with elegant slim (not bony!) fingers and long nail beds, but alas! I have square hands and nails, when cut short as I prefer, that also appear square. Nonetheless, I proudly wave them, clap profusely, and joyfully paint them every shade in the rainbow (though I’m sporting Philip Lim nails right now–thanks to your video which I showed on my iphone to my Korean manicurist! My hands do everything I ask of them and for that, I’ve gotta hand it to them!

  • mademoisellemauve October, 15 2012, 9:25 / Reply

  • I don’t know about ridge filler, but the supplement biotin is really good for hair and nails. :(

  • Does this product exist?!!?!?!!? REALLY?! My nails are like yours! They’re ridged and ugly, when I want to apply polish to my nails I have to use a base coat to protect them, and then polish. But I can use as much nutritive coats as I want that my nails will break by layers.

  • dasjenige October, 15 2012, 9:31 / Reply

essie has a very decent ridgefiller :)

thank you for a great post that had me laughing for a good minute or two :) until this post i never thought of having a favourite hand!

  • I hate my hands… I bite my nails since I’m six years old !!
So they spent 25 yrs old in my mouth ; they are so soft as they never saw the light ! please someone needs to give me a secret or advise to stop this. I can’t imagine myself at 40 with nails bitten.
I’m dreaming of wonderfull hands with red or blue polish…
the only week in my life I stopped was for my weeding and during honeymoon… back to bad natural way !

LOve your post as usual, but will never ever show you my hands ! right or left !

  • Louise BE October, 15 2012, 10:21

I know this may sounds disgusting but… the amount of bacteria under your nails is the same amount there is under a toilet seat, maybe that could help you to stop biting your nails :)

    Good luck !

  • I think we need some time out, Garance. I was perfectly happy with my right hand until I read your post, but now I have noticed that it is indeed uglier than my left hand!

Anyway, this nail filler is fantastic: http://www.makeupalley.com/product/showreview.asp/itemid=121256

  • I’m a young man, but my left hand looks rather girly (for my size). I have long, slinky fingers and the type of inset fingernails that don’t look bad when they grow out a little. It’s not manly to let fingernails grow out. But somehow, with my fingernails, I don’t notice and neither does anyone else unless I grip them. Alas.
    http://lordashbury.com

  • I know what you mean! My right hand is clearly the overworked one, and thanks to midterms last couple weeks, my cuticles are crap thanks to me nervously peeling at them, and lately I feel like my nails get dirtier, and I noticed this happening since I got my iPad. My nails were never like this!

And I agree, sometimes the cheaper the nail polish, the better it is. My Chanel polish chips in about an hour!

  • I know what you mean about the left and the right. Generally I don’t show my hands in winter… poor circulation means they look blue and dry – not exactly sexy! However, both Argan oil and Neem oil rubbed into nails soften the ridges and generally make nails look very healthy. Dr. Hauschka makes a convenient nail pen with neem oil.

Could your ridge filler be diorlisse?

  • ahhhhh I love this post! I also have ridges!! my mother has the most naturally beautiful nails, but I didn’t inherit them… instead I have ridges. And my right hands still has a strange muscle from the time five years ago that I volunteered on my cousin’s archaelogical dig for three weeks.. but I have long slim fingers.. anyway tell us about the ridge fillers! now I am dying to know! <3

    http://www.mavala.com/indexphp.php?id=8&prod_id=20

    en vente chez Sephora ;)

    bon apres midi

  • Garancedore,
    I love your sight,
    You have so much talent!
but this hand thing seems a bit OC to me…
Is this really what you ladies in NY worry about?
come back to the real world.
    thxsally

  • I am delighted

  • Garance you are not alone!!! And now I am not alone either- let’s have a big girly hug now! My nails are awful; nail varnish and polish removers and buffing and polishing all make my nails peel off in ugly layers and look like zombie hands (no exaggeration here either!) and my right hand looks like it’s been under a sledge hammer a few times too many (years of art classes and washing up will do that to you). I personally find that giving the nails a little file every now and then, pushing the cuticle back and MOISTURE MOISTURE MOISTURE has made my hands look sooooo much better. They hate water too, but neutrogena intense hand cream few times a day does the job. Even helps with the monster ridges- and my nails look like the Alps half the time :((((!

  • I like Revlon cause its cheap I can do this ALL the time:)

  • You have pretty hands, Garance!!
Ahhh…and ridge filler…I think the best one is Mavala. And their glossy top coat, Colourfix, is also amazing. But for the polish itself I prefer Chanel. Or Opi. (But I find that their colour is a little thin so that it needs 3 coats.)
Love your blog btw!!! Keep up the great work! xxx from Hong Kong

  • Essie Ridge-Filling Base Coat!! Love you Garance!

  • Essie ridge filler is great I think or Malava. Good luck

  • This is my HG Ridge Filler, brilliant stuff. Hope they never discontinue this miracle product.

  • I’m left handed literally which means I can’t write and prefer not to show my hands period. Your left hand at least looks model worthy in photo. My nail polish lasts maybe two days if I’m real lucky and nothing looks worse than chipped dark polish. They’re also weak, ridged and short (so happy short is in vogue). Only professional manicures seem to work at keeping cuticles looking good for several days and the only ridge fillers I’m familiar with are OPI or Seche Vite. Aren’t they all the same?

  • you have beautiful hands! You have long nail beds so you can wear any type of nail polish and it will look so good!

    http://lavieenliz.com

  • Dior and Sally Hansen has great ones!

  • My hands are hugeley different, in dexterity and strength and also visually. I have a writing callous on my right hand middle finger that has permanently changed the shape of that nail, and I’m so pleased to have it actually. I think of younger generations who grow up with keyboards and touch screens and I think that probably none of them will have writing callouses! I was probably from the last generation to have them! So odd to think of things like that. Also, I have horrible nails, they don’t split lengthwise or have ridges, but they flake apart in layers and are super week. The only solution for them: Nailtiques. I use formula 2, and have been for years, and as long as I’m good about keeping it up my nails are perfect! I know they have other formulas for other issues, maybe there’s a perfect one for you? Worth checking out. Of course, you do have to be fairly religious about it…

    http://nomadic-d.blogspot.com/

  • A favourite hand? I never thought about it, I like both my hands!

  • haha I’m left-handed, so definitely no lazy left hand here! though I use both my hands equally frequently, so I can’t see much difference between them (except for that bump on the left middle finger, from writing). but thanks for bringing up the topic, I never even thought about it before, so one more thing to like on my body :)

  • My Garance you have such pretty nails! Why haven’t I noticed this before? Sadly, I am of the “flaky” nobility. I can often be found in times of boredom pealing layers off my nails to pass the time. ( A filthy habit I know). I believe Nailtiques make very specific nail formulas for every type of condition. xx
    http://www.vforveronique.com

  • Really beautiful !!
    I loved the picture

  • She probably used the Jessica ridge filler.

    Merci

  • I also prefer my left hand, I guess a lot of right handed woman do. Although I don’t do much handwriting anymore I still have this little stupid callus on the middle finger, it used to be much bigger, but it is still there. My two index fingers are so bended, when I hold them together, my right one shows to the right and my left one to the left….. thank god! Imagine if it was vice versa!
Have you ever checked if you have enough iron/enough blood? Sometimes the nails can be like this, when you have a deficit of it, might be worth checking. xxx from Switzerland

    Autrement dit, j’ai interêt à beaucoup sourire… ;)

  • i have worn OPI ridge filler for YEARS! it fills in and makes them matte and – if you should happen to choose color – it stays on better/smoother/etc. Wonderful!

  • Dearest Garance,
It was truly lovely meeting you this weekend in Philadelphia. Divina! As a foot and ankle surgeon, I am constantly washing my hands, and I always splurge on hand creams, with a preference for l’occitane hand and cuticle creams. They leave my hands tender and strong, soft and empowered.

  • Joli commentaire ;)

  • Mavala does a surperb ridgefiller.

I used it for a while, until I realized that the ridges are barely noticeable. We need to man up girls.

  • I love pink polish because is magical!

    http://www.ohmydior.org/

  • Hi Garance! I have the same problem as you do, specially now… ridges have taken all over my nails. I use the OPI ridge filler, I’m very happy with the results it feels like applying just the normal base coat before color. Hope it helps!

  • MAVALA!!

    http://www.paylessbeauty.com/index.php?file=productdetail&icatid=240&iprod_id=2247

  • Hi Garance,

I have found the ESSIE ridge filler works best for me. I tried OPI but it is too “white” and it can show underneath the color. I also feel that the ESSIE one just glides on better. Hope this helps!
    Melissa

  • No, seriously.. You should be a hand model.
And I’m not just saying that.
Your hand looks like the perfect example of an elegant hand that could only belong to an elegant French woman.

I’m not going to tell you about my hands, no way, not after seeing yours. ;)

  • Come on! Chanel Base Coat. It even looks pretty.

    Bizou!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • People always tell me I have beautiful hands, like all the time (not bragging, hell yeah,I am…haha), but I know my right hand is less perfect, the fingers are a little twisted from writing too…but like you said, it does all the work, so I love it more too.

  • Hands are amazing things….I guess I don’t like the appearance of either of mine (chubby mannish hands that are somewhat neglected – apart from a flash of charcoal grey varnish!) – but I think my favourite hand if I had to chose would be my left, despite being right handed, as it bears my wedding band and a freckle at the base of my middle finger. J’adore your humour Garance! xox

  • Your left hand is very pretty, but it’s missing something. Ahem! (Where’s Scott?)

  • I have to say your manicure looks lovely. Personally both my hands are the same in look, however, in strength I’m a lefty, yes I have to agree with loving your particular hand, I am the same I write, text, like blogs all with my left had especially on my phone. I find OPI have a great range of nail care…

  • I hate my nails, they are terrible. I tried everything but nothing works…My hands are quite okay. There are some scars on it but they tell a story so it’s okay. Love this shot btw, beautiful! xx

    Bonne continuation.

  • I love hands all hands, because they tell you of your trade…if you generally work with your hands, and i dont’ mean typing(lol), they speak of your passion and love for what you do…Chefs/Bakers, carpenters, potterers. etc…..

Forget your hands, there is so much more to you thans splintered nails…

Gesa

  • This is a lovely post, I only wish there were multiple shots of your left hand, profile, slant and sillhouete.

Oh, we must be distant cousins then because I, too, am descended from the Nail Ridges. Be proud of your hands, they do great work. Just think, if you had a lazy right hand, none of us would know you.

  • Garance’s manicurist on the shoot, I know you’re reading, please speak up!
Garance, please don’t forget to let me know when you find out what that magical product is — I need it too!!

J’adoooore mes mains!

  • For ridge filler, one word, Dior.
It even comes in several shades of nude.

  • I know, I know, left hand OK but right hand not. At 67 I can finally say that I have reached maturity (when it comes to nails) and the secret is ‘essie’. Absolutely incredible. I suddenly look like a grown up women with dark burguny nails (‘sole mate’) and properly manicured with ‘all in one base’ and top coat ‘no chips ahead’. Nails are smooth and glossy and it lasts for at least 10 (!) days. Ps you were great at le Grand Journal. Your appearance was super and your question to Karl was just so you! Chapeau!

  • Wonderful shot. You have beautiful hands. You are lucky to have such pretty hands.

  • Bad news for you: the ridges get worse when you get older due to menopause, hormones etc….
God news: There are tons of products available. My favorite is CND RIDGE OUT base coat, BIOTIN ( TABLETS) and CND SOLAR OIL(nail & cuticle conditioner).
Believe me because I tried everything else in the market….

NAIL POLISHES: ESSIE, OPI, CHANEL, DIOR ….

  • OPI Ridge Filler is the best :)

  • Soooo Funny LOL never thought of using ridge filler….i use a new Beige polish from YSL #22 Beige Leger slight mauve undertone..did u ever try buffing? if u ever find out the brand please blog in bold letters

  • Madeleine October, 15 2012, 8:40 / Reply

Was it the Deborah Lippmann ridge filler base coat? It’s FANTASTIC!

  • My toenails are the same way! Ridges all over. I like to thank my pointe shoes for them, I think they just…wrinkled the nails. Is that even possible? To wrinkle a toe nail? Because that’s what my toes look like. It’s so weird, and I always try to hide my toes, but I live in a tropical climate, and I’m always in sandals. So I’m always in that situation of trying to tuck my feet out of sight under a chair or something.

As for my hands, I guess I’m fairly fond of them. I do like my right hand better…my left is so absolutely useless, although, looking at them now, typing, the left is noticeably slimmer. You can see the tendons and stuff that are hidden on the right by muscle. But the left one has an awkward scar given to me by a duck. I guess, neither of my hands are really close-up suitable, after all.

  • Oh Garance, yes yes, I really thought I was alone on this topic.. I love my left hand, feminine and girly, nails seem to just grow better..but my left as well has the crooked fingers, from writing and also and I had broken the middle ones as a child… The nails also have ridges. To the point, you have made my day as I am going to head to buy some ridge filler asap!!

    xoxo

  • Garance, I am neurotic about 99 things, but my nails ain’t one! I love my hands! According to every manicurist who works on my nails, I evidently have long nail beds (whatever that means). This post made me laugh, thanks for sharing with us! I’ll commiserate with you if you ever write about grown women with freckles-actually I like my freckles too ;) P.S. Butter London makes a good primer/basecoat/ridge filler… Cheers!

  • At least you have one beautiful hand. Both my hands are unattractive. My finger nails are do wide that I can only use beige colors, otherwise I would look like a drag queen. :(

This is the first time I’m leaving a comment in your blog. I love it, I love the way you write and you make me laugh with your stories. You’re absolutely lovable.

  • Dancing in the Rain October, 15 2012, 10:20 / Reply

Butter London’s base coat doubles as a ridge filler and dries to a natural, subtle sheen.

  • i recently gave up my weekly ritualistic manicure, for the time being at least. i feel that it has worn down my nails and forced me to spend a ridiculous amount monthly on the expense. we will see how long it lasts. any how i usually get the same exact color and the same exact short nails. so i am boring in general!
    xx, http://wordbyjessie.com/

  • Waaa I could use this miracle product as well! I have a strange case of nail eczema and am always ashamed to show off my hands. Oh, and by the way, I have a sneaky suspicion that l’education francaise is responsible for my right middle finger’s slight curve to the right. With all those years of written dissertations and paragraphs to “justifier” my answer, my stylo plume permanently distorted the poor thing not to mention the permanent callus it left me.

  • Stephanie October, 15 2012, 11:02 / Reply

Your left hand is so pretty, Garance! I grew up playing the piano, and so although I don’t play anymore, my boyfriend says he loves the way I hold things in my hands or move my hands over a keyboard or when I am drawing – as if I am playing music. I on the other hand always think of how much my hands look like my mother’s, which looked delicate but were strong, working hands :) Hands are special.

  • oh god. I have the ugliest right hand after collecting firewood. I am not a ridge filler sort of girl but I love that there is a product out there for filling nail ridges! LOL! In fact, you have just made me look at my nails ridges for the first time ever!

  • Garance! I can totally relate! I love my left hand. It is delicate and dainty. My right hand is muscular. I am a dentist and after the years of training my hand grew even more manly due to strengthening. I also have a scar on my right hand from a car accident. Growing up I used to imagine that I would one day be a hand model for QVS or TV shopping lol! So silly. Anyways, I still love my hands even though they are a bit manly and really dry from my crazy washing habits.

  • Mavala is the best nail polish brand that i know. They have the most wonderful line for nail therapy, all kinds of problems that you can have, mavala takes care!
I like my two hands, the thing that i don’t like is the forefinger!

  • hello, garance, i study biology (therefore you should trust me with your whole heart) and i read that nail ridges have a lot to do with your diet/nutrient intake. in fact, your nails can be one of the first indicators of whether or not you are in good health. there are many different types of nail ridges, and you can google what your particular type may mean. for example, vertical ridges usually mean you are deficient in iron. so it may be part genetic, or it may be what you are or aren’t eating! i (humbly) say try increasing your intake of whichever vitamins and see how it helps! :) “Let food be thy medicine.”

    Bon courage! ;)

  • I know one amazing which is (super important) Formaldehyde FREE, Toluene FREE, Phthalate (DBP) FREE :)

I’ve just tried the Revlon and it’s great – you need a top-coat if you like shine but I like it by itself.

  • Your hands are so pretty Garance! No reason to hide them :)

  • You are too funny Garance…and SO right!! If I look at my hands I don’t really notice a difference, but I feel the delicate, femininity of my left hand. I wonder if that’s the reason why North American women wear their wedding rings on the left?

Oh my !

  • Garance, you are hilarious! I read everything in the tone of voice you do your Pardon my French videos!

  • I copy pasted this in my inspiration/to-do folder! I think you have beautiful hands and adore the way your nails are shaped.

  • Dear Garance,

Thank you for sharing this. In return, I want to share this account I came across. While it comes from an old Filipino immigrant speaking of her experiences in the field, I think one can relate it to their life in their own ways.

    Ay, manong
    your old brown hands
    hold life, many lives
    within each crack
    a story.

I use to be embarrassed of my right hand, opting to offer my left hand instead when holding hands and whatnot. But, reading this makes me appreciate this right hand that shows the wear from cooking, rock-climbing, chemical photo developing, and Taiko drumming! I’m glad you share the same attitude!

    Cheers,
    Jocelyn

Garance, I see your hands and nails as beautiful! As for me, I think my fingers are too thick, my hands too strong, BUT deep down I too appreciate the story they tell of life and the work I do. :)

  • I love how you write Garance! Made me laugh! Thank you for that! I love my hands, just like my feet & heels (haha!). Only problem is when one nail from my perfectly manicured fingers decides to break, leaving a weird gap! May be I’m too harsh when grabbing things or opening doors! LOL
