Day to Night
8 years ago by
It’s crazy, when I think about it. I wear makeup every day. Before I turned 30, I almost never wore makeup, but now I feel like I can’t really go without it. I’ve gotten really used to my eyeshadow, my mascara, and my brow pencil. Without them, I feel like I have no eyes. Does it make you feel that way too?
My makeup is very light, very “day look” most of the time. And when the evening comes, and I want to impress the crowds (getting a little carried away here :) I add a few layers of eyeshadow and mascara and do a smoky eye. And every time, I’m impressed by the power of makeup.
That’s what I wanted to capture in this series with Liu Wen, who I shot for Estée Lauder. Ok, unlike me, Liu doesn’t really need makeup, but this sublime evening look made her go from young lady to femme fatale and it makes me…totally want it.
Even the red lips, yes. Even if I’m incapable of not smudging it. It’s so gorgeous!
What about you? What’s your day to night transformation?
Great post!
xoxo

I found her so much more beautiful without any makeup at the last image (and i know that making a natural look makeup is even more complicated …)
Ok it’s a publicity for ESTÉE LAUDER which i love…but when you are so young i am not sure you need so much sophistication….

Stunning!

The make-up is well done and the looks are very polished — a perfect run-up to the year of the Monkey!
I end up not wearing much make-up because I can’t always be sure that I won’t have an allergic reaction around my eyes. I had not had a reaction for a couple of years and decided to try out eyeliner and mascara a couple of months ago, and then had a reaction to the hypoallergenic eye remover. The skin around my eyes is just starting to get back to normal now.
If I could control this completely, there would be more situations where I would wear make-up. As it stands, every time I decide to go for “full application” with eye make-up, I do a mental check on how “worth it” it is for the likely pain to follow.
I have the same problem. I have tried all the hypoallergic stuff and it makes no diff. But I pay more attention to my eyebrows now.
No one seems to have an answer to this problem. And I have found plenty of fellow sufferers online.
Merci !!
My mum has that same problem too so she’s switched to eyelash extensions and they work for her.
Ohhh but Garance, what is that perfect shade of red she’s wearing? Or is that just yours, the photographer’s secret magic?
Yes, wanna know the shade as well !
Beautiful!
Glorious. I would love to see a video tutorial. Remember your It’s Easy story? That was calling for a video OUT LOUD. Please please (keep the beautiful pictures, by all means)
Très belles photos …

She is gorgeous. Love the natural look, myself. But obviously, there’s a time and a place for everything so that evening look is definitely warranted for the right event!

Wowww!
Julie, Petite and So What?
Sublime! Trop beau.
I don’t really have a day to night make up trick. My routine is pretty much the same. :)
Maybe more eye shadow.
I love a red lip!
These photos are beautiful!

That is one gorgeous human being.
The lines of her pose in the full-body evening shot are so graceful; the image almost feels like one of your illustrations.
Totally agree about these looking like Garance’s illustrations, this post is such a beautiful, evocative thing. Thank you Studio Dore for making my mornings so inspiring!
Yep, without makeup I feel like I have no eyes too…

I resist getting addicted to make up. I quickly got to the point where I felt I couldn’t leave the house without it. That made me realize I wanted to be more in touch with my natural face. Now make up is for special times and it’s a dramatic change when I put it on. I want to recognize myself in the mirror each morning. Be yourself and feel beautiful!
Mostly the same– natural tones and a good eyebrow, I go a little darker on the eyes for night. I tried a more natural red until the gay mafia told me to wipe it off (otherwise known as friends, Brad and Denis), lol. Red is for daring youth, they said– whether that’s true, I don’t know, but Liu looks stunning either way…
DAMN THIS GIRL IS BEAUTIFUL.
There’s nothing better than a red lip in my opinion! I used to live in NYC and I found that women really did make an effort when going from the office to an event in terms of looks. I can’t say the same about Paris, where women are less made up. It’s a little sad, I think. It kind of adds to the excitement when you change things up for the night.
Beautiful photos!
So true…I’ve been trying to train myself down from eyeliner everyday but it just perks everything up to have a swipe of liner and my lashes curled. On the occasions I do put on more for evening I always love the results, watching myself transform. A reminder that “I” can transform as well.
The evening photo is what drew me in. Liu does not need it per se, but how stunning she is with it. Natural for day (an oxymoron for sure) but a perfect showstopper for evening. Well done!
Liu is gorgeous. Pictures too!
I like the big silver earing. Where it does come from?
And always love your blog!
The first look is beautiful, the red lip and nails are perfect together.

Sublimes photos! La mannequin est divine, son make up de jour comme de nuit est parfaitement approprié!

She is lovely. That red lip is so gorgeous, like a piece of fruit at it’s ripest.
She is superb. My favorite is the first shot. With time, eyelashes seem shorter, eyebrows thinner, and eyes kind of disappear. Yet, anything overdone looks…..overdone. I love red, but I can’t do a red lip because it’s just too harsh. I use mascara, a little filler on the brows, some tinted BB cream and a swipe of a sheer lipstick. To dress up, I add eyeliner. I hesitate on eye shadow, because it creases too easily, and when one is starting to get wrinkles, one doesn’t want to highlight creases!
Sometimes I feel like a hypocrite because I wear makeup every day, while telling my adolescent daughter she doesn’t need any (which is true, but she is itching to start).
Well, damn. She’s gorgeous! Can you please give an idea of what she’s wearing? Especially that red lip!
Liu Wen and those shots are incredible. I love good laid back makeup shots.

She is for sure a beauty with or with out makeup.
As I get more in touch with myself, which I find is a life long process for me, I love being the way I was when I was born, free of and artifice or persona I took on as a way to cope and feel safe in this world. xo Melissa Lee
It’s funny – I believe the opposite is true from what most posts say, that the younger you are the less you need make up…that may be true, but I remember using way more make up when I was a teenager than I ever do now, that I’m beyond 35. The older I get, the lighter I get with makeup. Not because I don’t like it, but because I find that it ages me quite a bit. I still have my ‘routine’ but I keep it as simple and as light as possible. Or the risk is to look like a mask…
Great post! Love Liu Wen! For those who asked about the products that were used: http://www.esteelauder.com/estee-edit-article-liu-wens-new-year
Merci Emilie
Oh wow.
Qu’elle est belle !
Concernant le make up, je me maquille très peu mais je trouve cela tellement beau quand c’est bien fait !

WOw amazing photos… the first my fave!

This woman is absolutely stunning! x

Avant 30ans tu vivais en France…
Pretty please, tell me where that drop-dead-gorgeous silk cream blouse in the evening look is from. These photos are all achingly beautiful. And I agree with you about needing a brow and an eye at all times. xo
Whose clothes are featured in the photo? They are beautiful
The strict minimum I do are my eyebrows and lipstick at work. I don’t even wear moisturizer. I’ve come to detest putting layers of cream on my face.
Personally I’m terribly afraid of being the woman who wears make up daily and the day she ventures out without make-up, she looks sick or worse. I prefer to be without, and the day I wear some, I get positive remarks!
I’m also ethnically chinese and hopefully the great Asian genes will keep me looking young beyond my years ;-)
Yes, there’s always this moment when a little makeup just feels right and feels good. And boy, what a stunning photoshoot! Flawless, beautiful and so elegant, day or night. x
Less is more! A little makeup can really change a lot, but not everyone is blessed when it comes to wearing makeup.
I’m so sick of those makeup for glasses tutorials that use frame or glasses without heavy prescription lens for demonstration. The biggest joke ever. Smoky eyes look awkward behind glasses for shortsighted. I wish more makeup artists care about girls with thick glasses that truly wanna look good in makeup, not everyone can wear contact lens!
What is she wearing in the photos? Her clothes are amazing..
