I have the wrong personality for colorful hair.

I’m not searching for a compliment here, I’m just being real with you (although if you feel like telling me that I’m beautiful no matter what color my hair is and that I have a great personality, you can leave it in the comments).

Deep, deep, deep, down I know I could never pull it off. Why you ask? Well, let me tell you…

– I started by asking myself WWEAD? And of course, I was like no.

– I’m not a rebel. Green hair, pink hair, blue hair, it all feels really rebellious. I never got a speeding ticket, I never missed curfew, I call my mom everyday. That’s not to say that these girls don’t call their moms, but it has this slightly rebellious undertone that I just can’t own.

– I often trip while walking. I broke my toe walking in my own apartment (and then I had to wear a velcro boot backstage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show). I don’t think I need anything additional drawing attention to me. And you know that if you have My Little Pony hair, heads will turn. And no one wants to be the girl with My Little Pony hair that trips over herself.

– My wardrobe includes a lot of black. And I feel like if I wear a lot of black and have say, bright red hair, I will look like a) Jean Grey from X-Men or b) a reject from Good Charlotte. I think colorful hair would require a serious wardrobe revamping. Elisa and Preetma have THE wardrobes for that (aka a fun wardrobe). If they let me raid their closets, I might be more likely to reconsider…

Preetma Singh Green Hair Photo

– I also really like things to match. I spend too much time thinking about how the zipper on my boots will go with my knuckle rings. So even if I got rid of all the black in my wardrobe, I’d end up being the girl with pink hair, pink lipstick, a pink dress, pink shoes, pink nails and a pink clutch. I’d look like a crayon. (Except Elisa, she makes the matching look really, really good here…)

– I’m just straight up not cool enough. Just like I’m not cool enough for: colored fur, ear cuffs, socks and heels, and most pieces from Isabel Marant (although I mean, I wish).

Kate Foley Pink Hair Photo

While I remain deeply envious of Kate’s flowing pink strands, Preetma’s green locks and Elisa’s navy chop, I have to remind myself that it’s just not me.

What do you think of this colorful hair trend? Are you going for it? Does it fit you?

  • A friend of mine did the navy hair, while it is not for me I do love it.

  • I love that you are promoting owning up to your own personality. Although sometimes I feel edgy, I don’t think I could commit to any “one” look. There’s nothing wrong with saying “it’s just not me”… I know that I wear things all the time someone else might not… simply b/c it’s just not “them”. :)

  • While I respect the strong and slightly rebellious personalities that can pull off colored hair, it doesn’t fit my style. Like Garance, if my (mostly black) wardrobe doesn’t do well with color, I don’t think my hair will either. Bravo to those who can pull it off, and those that notice that they can’t.

  • Hi Alex,
I love what you say about “not being cool enough”… I have the same issue, there are all these cool, comfortable clothes and crazy looks that look great on some girls but that I feel I could never pull off (as an example, I once wore Nikes at the office, everybody commented on my shoes in a “how dare you?” way – even though they all wear sneakers – and even my boss looked at me strangely). So too bad, let’s keep on looking classical and secretly cool. And Isabel Marant clothes are overpriced anyway.

  • Hmmm, but have you seen this hair chalk stuff (does it work)? Because maybe I could do it for 24 hrs. Definitely not longer than that.

  • During my Teens and my Twens I used to have all sorts of red hair. I am really fair and have a lot of freckles and my mom is a redhead. I inherited a lot from her, but unfortunately not her nice red hair. So I tried to copy her hair color for many years, but always ended up having another red than her. I loved it, but it needed a lot of care. Seven years ago I finished with that and now I am naturally dark blond and I am happy with that.

  • I think the last look is really nice and easy to wear and to coordinate with your outfit.
I’m not super crazy in the color I’m wearing however I did it ( even more pink with brown hair) and it turns out that it was really cool and easy to have everyday. :)
You can try it with a chalk and you will see ;)
    Have fun!

  • I’d love to rock pink hair sometime, but it wouldn’t exactly suit my profession and I’m not sure that I could pull it off realistically, either!

  • Not even I have the right personality to bring this type of hair, but I love to see who knows them bring!!

  • OMG, I spend too much timing worrying about whether my zippers/belt buckles/watch/jewellery tone all match, too! And I’m too old for colourful hair.

  • Love the blue black cropped look…. but I have to admit that it’s very rare that I see colored hair that I think looks remotely cool…. except for the aforementioned and the girl from the blog ‘We The People’ her pink hair suits her too a T!!!x

  • I absolutely love when and it’s subtle, just like Kate did. I think it’s the perfect in-between! And am-I going cray-cray or Luella Bartley had pink highlights at MBMJ? As for Elisa, she can do whatever she wants, she’ll always be an icone!!

  • Don’t forget the opposite is also true! I bet some of these “crazy, rebellious” girls also want what you got that they don’t have ;)

  • Just as nail art : MAN REPELLER !

But I guess you can assume that… well I wont. I’m ok with eventually beeing attractive.

  • I don’t know you Alex, but I must say, that I love your writing, your honesty and your wittiness, so no compliments about your looks here, but I can just compliment in what I know of you ;-)

Elisa looks fantastic with her new hair! Love it! But the colorful hair trend is not for me, not anymore. I did that years ago, hahaha now I sound like a grandma…. but it’s the truth… I’m done with it and stay with my Aveda blond to cover up my grey hair bits…. xxx

  • A reject from Good Charlotte—bahahahahahahha.

  • I’m with you: not a rebel, always black… I spent one year thinking about chopping my locks and it took me two yers to get ombre hair (I did it just when it started to feel oh-so-2012).
No colours, no bright hair for me. I’m comfortable with my brown medium lenght hair thank you very much.
Now I’m going to put on my pijamas, prepare a hot beverage and spent my afternoon at home.
Yeah, that’s me: living la vida loca!!!!

  • Apropos of today’s post, this just showed up on my twitter feed: http://www.luckymag.com/beauty/2014/02/nicole-richie-purple-hair

Apparently, Nicole Richie’s hair was colored via photoshop. You could try doing that as a fun, no risk test run. But, honestly, it’s really good to know who you are and you do!

  • I already had the pastel pink last year for a while, ususally I have the platinum blonde short pixie cut, but every now and then about every two years, I need a clean slate and just shave it all of and go back to my natural greyish dark blonde. It feels fresh and clean (and always funny reactions by everybody who knows me less than 2 years, haha).
It doesn’t really matter the only important thing is that you like yourself and feel pretty as you are :)

  • I wear loads of black; I think it’s actually easier to have bright hair if you do. I’ve never dyed my hair a bright color because I, too, can’t imagine trying to make pink and red work together. I’ve always wanted to have colorful hair, though, so I’m going to try it out this week. I’m going to try for a more subdued look, but I’m paranoid that I’m going to mess it up so I’m going to dye the ends only–that way, if it’s a horrible disaster, I can just chop it off. I would recommend trying a dye that slowly washes out for anyone with lighter hair who wants to experiment, but my hair’s really dark so I have to just bite the bullet and go for it. I think with the range of color options out there and celebrities who’ve rocked colorful hair, anyone can pull it off (yes, even the non-rebellious) with a little confidence.

  • I think this is the kind of thing wigs are great for – the kind of thing you would love to experiment with but don’t want to live with permanently or maybe just physically can’t do. A persona you want to just try on for a day (or many personas!).

They can be really transforming, I think (as any big hair change – loved your cut, btw, G!), but you’re not stuck with the look. They don’t have to be expensive, either! Here’s one I like (a long wavy brown wig instead of my regular blond curls), and I think I am hardly recognizable in it:
    http://www.theseventhsphinx.com/fashion/features/the-tuxedo-stripe/
I love it, though! Not looking like myself is a key part of the appeal.

  • J’adore!

  • O M Geee! Alexa’s navy looks so damn cool! So different!
    With love,

  • I love it on other and especially the white blonde/pink and black/blue is gorgeous. Never really got the green but still. I’m back to blonde since a few weeks and that’s crazy enough for me ;) xx

    Essaie….

  • I’ve spent my life feeling envious of those more rebellious than I. As I was nearing 40 (gasp!), I decided to try out the colored hair thing – JUST ONCE – kind of like a Living List moment. So I didn’t. I got a magenta streak in my hair. And I felt completely rebellious. I loved it. Friends and family responded with much more of a “meh” than a “woot.” And because my hair is super-fine and porous, the color was barely noticeable within weeks – but I knew it was there. :) AND I got my fix. Now I’m back to my natural strawberry blond.

    As I approach 80, I may try jet black…

    http://www.laparentheseenchantee.fr/

  • My sister had multicolored hair for a while in high school and my husband had Smurf blue hair for a while in high school and both of them could still pull off the crazy hair color look. But not me, I’d rather be with the bright hair peeps than be one of them – I just don’t like attention drawn to myself. But I think they look fabulous.

  • You are right, you have to feel like it. Also, you have to have the confidence for it. Simple. You have to be confident to be THE you that you truly ARE.

I Did a super short cut last spring and I LOVE it. And now I am in love with Elisa’s blue chop, I may go for smth like that… or I may not, it all depends on the mood, because I do have the confidence to do whatever feels right and not care what others will think. Whatever I do with my appearance is for myself not for strangers to judge.

  • Moi j’adore et j’en veux, ça me tente énormément!!

  • Catherine February, 26 2014, 3:26 / Reply

Oh! “My Little Pony” Hair! I actually snorted I laughed so hard.

  • You make me laugh. Out loud. So yes, you do have an awesome personality haha!

Love the ‘I broke my toe in my own apartment so I don’t need to draw more attention to myself’ – I FEEL YA! I somehow manage to walk into the wall in my hallway, even though there’s a good 1.5 meter clearance..!?! What the?!

Although I think that some people can definitely pull off coloured hair (I had a friend that I had a simili-bob haircut, but it was longer on one side, where there was also a bright pink strand of hair beneath the layers…SO nice) I don’t think it’s for everyone. Some people do make it look cool, others just look ridiculous! I think it all depends on how you wear it, and simply what style you have!

As for you, I’m the same, my wardrobe is mostly black or super dark colours. But I’ve been trying to make a bit of a change and I’ve been adding touches of colour here and there. I started with nail polish, then lipstick (which is still intimidating…) or a scarf..then a belt…and now, I wear red pants with a leopard belt! (And a black top and shoes to tone it down, mind you!) but it’s a start and I see now that I’ve been limiting myself with all-black all the time! Just a thought ;)

Love your posts so much – i look forward to reading them all the time!!

  • oooooohhh how beautiful is elisa with exactly this chop and exactly this color!!!!!!!!!!

  • J’adore mes cheveux verts!

  • I love the trend, but I haven’t touched my hair (in terms of dye) since I was very young, so I don’t believe I would actually go through with dying my hair blue. However, with the recent emergence of hair chalk, I’m tempted to experiment.

I also feel that I’m not cool enough for this trend though, so even with the non-permanence of hair chalk, the experiment may never see the light of day.

  • princessglee February, 26 2014, 4:32 / Reply

If I could find a color that’s rarely seen on hair then maybe I’d do it. Better yet–I’m looking for something new in colored hair. Trying to think of something or “borrow” inspiration from a great mind amongst us out here in humanity.

  • Hi Garance,

I tried it out recently, I got a dip dye in navy blue. (I have chin length almost black hair) So it was super subtle & kinda fun. It did feel rebellious, I’m a mum with 2 kids (I called it my mid-mum crisis) HOWEVER I soon got bored, found it hard to ‘match’ to my outfits especially for things like weddings. So… glad I did it, but getting it cut out next week !

    http://www.lecomptoirdelilou.com/

  • Trop beau! J’adore!!!

  • I actually feel that coloured hair looks best on women who have a classic look, kind of like Kate in the last photo. Otherwise, it’s just too extreme. But someone with a very subdued, understated look and then that pop of colour…very striking and very cool. So I don’t think only rebels can have this colour. It’s just that more “classic” women are v reluctant to try this look and that’s totally fair. But I still think it works better on a classic look – the contrast is super cool and totally pulls you in.

  • I’m just like you! Plus, I tend to think that if my hair was born this colour, it’s meant to be the best fitting my skin. Let’s say my skin tone isn’t easy to define so I just prefer to avoind any regretful mess with colours, but those who do, girls I wish I had that *rebel* gene also ;)

  • I’ve been every colour – including blue – in Shanghai – in the 1990’s when there were very few Westerners there – now that stopped traffic. You do have to re-think the colours you wear when you change your hair colour, for clothes, lips, eyes. It’s fun. But the bright colours don’t tend to last very long, so it’s back to the hairdresser every four weeks. High maintenance.

  • Oh, I’m so right there with you! A girl I know has this amazing dusky grey hair that ombrés into a light violet color… I’m so jealous because I love it, but know I could never pull it off! Although, I like to think that it’s not because I’m not cool enough as much as it’s because I’m just a totally different type of cool (and I suspect the same can be said for you!). So there it is – the best advice I can ever give anyone: know your own type of cool and totally embrace it! :)

  • Made me laugh out loud. My little pony hair!! Thanks for your blog it’s always a real pleasure to read.

  • I’ve done it before and I loved it, but I’m an actor who auditions for a lot of commercials so I can’t right now. However, I have to admit that lately I’ve been dreaming about giving it up and letting my hair go gray! I’m only 30, so I feel like it would be the ultimate act of hair rebellion- haha!

  • I hate coloured hair except for one darling girl in a shop near me. She has fluffy pale pink hair (over v. v. blonde) and it suits her ultra femininity.

  • Love the trend, but agree with you, I’m just not badass enough to pull it off. I also don’t know if my boss would approve, and it’s certainly not badass to ask your boss’ permission before you dye your hair is it?

    xx.

  • Oh I love colored hair! Most of all the one of the first photo, that blue is absolutely amazing. Said that, I would like to try but two things prevent me from coloring my hair: 1) It’s very expensive and 2) I’m afraid my hair will be ruined.
But Alex, if you really want to do it, then do it! Who cares if you are not a rebel? Who is nowadays?
You like to dress in black (I do, too) so it would be nice to give yourself a touch of color via hair!

  • I too was never rebellious growing up and perhaps that’s why now (in my *ahem* mid-thirties), I’m giving myself permission to try the things I was too scared to back then. Two summers ago, I dyed the bottom several inches of my long auburn hair a deep, dark cobalt – and I loved it!

Because the color was so rich and I still stuck with my fairly classic wardrobe, it didn’t feel as crazy or not-myself as I worried it might. Plus, I was able to just cut off the colored ends when I got tired of it.

I’m not sure what the ‘personality’ is of a person with non-natural colored hair is, but I enjoyed it as just a fun little change just for me. It may not be the last time either… Right now I’m rocking the Garance haircut, so that’s the hair fun I’m having for now!

  • You’re really getting me these days, guys! First Garance yesterday with the denim on denim, and today you, Alex, with the rebel hair! Now say, if you did want to play with the colorful hair, Davines make a conditioner that’s BRILLIANT for a project like this, I think. And temporary :)

For me, it was a temporary-rebel-for-a-few-days wish come true! Worked out pretty well, and most importantly I was smiling every time I looked in the mirror :) What do you think?

The conditioners come in different toning colors, but the most fun is definitely the red one!

I did it 9 years ago, & loved it. Dark purple on my long Bettie Page bob. It looked amazing with my mostly black wardrobe. It was temporary, to see if I liked it, & because I wasn’t sure how it would fly in my academic workplace.

    What I didn’t love:
-An additional 10 minutes or more on my makeup so I didn’t look completely washed out. (I’m a very pale dark blonde by nature.)
-When the colour stained my blonde hair for months on end. I was a luscious dark violet for about 2 weeks, then months of pastel purple, to pale pink, to pale puce… Not good. Not me.
    -Limiting my colour palette.

I’d do it again if the urge took me, but I wouldn’t go all-over dark again. I just do not have the patience to redraw my features in daily.

  • La première photo est très belle! C’est Elisa Nalin, n’est-ce pas? J’adore!

  • Girl, I think you should go peroxide blonde! You always talk about it… Even peroxide blonde with dark roots is hot. While your hair is short, I say take advantage and get a little experimental. A good sense of humor and great style will balance out any creative hair choices that you may not be 100% psyched about. I’ve also imagined you with the haircut the model Nadege had in the 90’s… that super close crop. Why not? Carpe diem!
