What’s in your makeup bag? Mine is full of brushes. I use them for everything. For my eye shadow, my powder (hate putting powder with anything else than a brush!), my other powder (what, everybody needs an extra touch of bronzer okay?), for my blush (what, everybody needs an extra touch of pink all right?), actually, everything. I don’t really like touching make up with my hands, I guess.

So I love them, don’t wash them often enough (come on, are you really washing them every night like Brandy told us to do?)(I don’t even wash them every month!)(Woops did I just say that?)(Yes I did…) and most of all, I LOSE them. All the time. I don’t know why. That and socks. All the time.
I always lose my best, chic brushes and then the most hideous one, that old one from Monop’, all grey and chipped and depressing and losing hair on my face*, resurfaces, of course.
And I have to try to do everything with that old dirty brush. And to put on my eye shadow with a stupid q-tip. Misery.

*Which may or may not have led to situations where I’ve had someone zoom in on my cheek with a horrified look : “I think a long black hair is growing on your face, Garance!” “You’re growing a beaaaaard!”.

So I was wondering. If I had to choose a few essential brushes, which ones would they be? What’s a girl to do? Ask Alice, that’s what. She gave us a breakdown on all the makeup brush essentials…

What are the basic brushes you should have?

A fluffy brush for concealer and base. I love to use a crease brush, it kind of looks like a big bushy tail. That I love using it to apply a hard concealer or Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage or a creamy base. You can also use it to brush on something like a Touche Éclat. It almost makes you feel like you are airbrushing your face with. It’s very very cool, it’s my favorite kind of brush. It’s very gentle and very clean. If you use a brush like this, it really deposits the right amount. [Alice uses Smashbox Crease Brush #10]

A brow spool brush is essential and a big lovely powder brush and that would be it for me, everything else you can do with your fingers. I love anything by Hakuhodo. If you’re going to get a powder brush spend the money, get an amazing brush and it will last you years.

What about for eyeshadow?

A small version of the same crease brush I recommended for the foundation and concealer is great. I think the fluffy, round ones are much easier to find your crease than say a flat brush that requires a little bit more control. I think something that is round and soft helps you feel the shape of your eye.

And a lip brush?

Tom Ford, Shu Uemura and Laura Mercier do good lip brushes. It’s really about personal preference because I like to apply lipstick with my fingers. It really depends on the user. It’s only an essential if you want your makeup to be really sharp.

What products should you always apply with a brush?

The only ones I can think of is powder and mascara. Everything else you can actually figure it out with your fingers.

Can you use the same brush in different products?

You can, but you just need to wash it off a bit with your hands. Don’t grab your bronzer brush and then try to do a soft white powder. If it’s clean, then totally. The first brush I gave you is a perfect example, I use a large eyeshadow crease brush for foundation.

How should you care for your brushes?

Wash them with a nice mild shampoo, like something for a baby. Wash them very gently, squeeze them out and lay them out or put them into a glass for them to dry. By the morning they will be dry. I would do it once a week, depending on your usage. Don’t let them get dirty because first, dirty brushes give you breakouts and second, dirty brushes don’t really work, they don’t apply the products nicely.

What about the brushes that come with products? Are they worth using?

Definitely. I think it’s about experimenting and having fun with them. You can do great shapes with brushes.

PS: The gorgeous brushes in this photo are from Laura Mercier!

  • I use about 6 brushes, the rest I wouldn’t know what to do with them.

  • Ha ha, I thought you were going to talk about your artistic arsenal, I mean – the brushes you use for your illustrations. That would be very interesting too!!!!

    Post super utile, thanks !
    Bisous.

  • Love this post BUT… you should never ever wash your makeup brushes and then stand them in a glass to dry!!!! if you do this then water gets into the base of the bristles and loosens the glue that holds them all together, so the brushes will start to lose bristles and eventually fall apart. Instead, lay them flat to dry on a paper towel or lay them on a [clean] sink counter with the bristles hanging over the sink so water will drip right off.

  • That is really a perfect post. Yesterday I chceck a new brand and some make up things and I spoke about a new make up brushes. So.. Great post for me.

  • I have about 40 brushes in daily rotation and special kit for traveling and special kit for purse. All that in order to use as little make up as possible and achieve natural look. Kinda bizarre and contradictory.

  • Cleaning my brushes is one of those things I often skip, which is soooo bad. But I did some research on best way to clean brushes and posted it a while back. You should check it out if you have time. There is a link to a how-to video from the great Michelle Chan, so you know it is solid :)

  • Great article. Brushes are really key to polishing a look although warmed fingers would be fine if you end up stranded on a deserted island : ) Kevyn Aucoin does some amazing brushes as well, supersoft and elegant http://sablebeauty.com/collections/tools-and-brushes

  • I rarely apply anything with my hands. Only foundation, sometimes. But I’ve heard a lot about Hakuhodo lately and am dying to try some!

  • I use brushed for everything too. I own every single version (except for a lip brush), but not very expensive ones and I also don’t wash them every day or week. I should do this though and buy better ones too (I’m just to much of a cheapskate). xx

  • I use 4 brushes, mascara brush, tooth brush, blush brush and very rarely a brush for eye shadow. I somehow ate quite the opposite of you Garance, I somehow prefer to use my fingers when ever I can. I use a cream blush most days and I put on my eye shadow also with my fingers, works better for me, actually I should say I use two brushes most days, my mascara and my tooth brush ;-) xxx

  • Well, I HAD expensive brushes, but my 4-yr-old took a pair of scissors to many of them and gave them haircuts! Can you imagine how that felt?? I replaced them with either the sephora brushes or the less expensive sonia kashuk brushes. I actually find I like them just as much.
PS I”ve been letting them dry standing up so thanks for the tip Britt … I’ll lay them flat from now on!

I bought a beautiful set of Lancôme brushes just before I got married …. About 27 years ago. They were expensive but I still use those brushes every day! I clean them once a week and I think only about two hairs came out in all that time. I’ve added a few more over the years from Mac but those Lancôme are the best.

I have a few good brushes but I really love and use my cheapo Real Techniques expert face brush for buffing in foundation, it’s soft but very dense. And I use my MAC 217 so much I’ve bought duplicates–it’s perfect for cream and powder eye shadow ( then use a clean one to blend in the edges). A tiny angled stiff brush for powder eyeliner and brow powder, and a Hakuhoda pencil brush for smoking out shadow under my eyes. But seriously–invest $20 in a set of Real Techniques brushes–they will change your life!

  • My thought : MAC COSMETICS brushes are the best , top quality !
The Eternal and Essential #217 brush you can never get enough of this one ( I have 5) be versatile and use it for many things (of course eyeshadows/ Highlighter / concealer etc.)
Now #187 or #130 half nylon / half natural best to have this light and minimal glow finish with your foundation/BBcream or even moisturizer …
Not so pricey and they last for so long ! ( if you give them a regular care of course ! )

  • Hello,
    Merci

  • Ahh I used to have so many brushes – I would just invent a reason to get myself a new kind of brush like “Oh but for this (tiny) part of my routine I should switch brushes, and this is absolutely perfect for it!” But when you travel a lot it’s remarkably easy to lose them! So I’d have to get really creative with the way I applied my makeup. I think I’ve grown into the whole unpredictability of what I will actually find my makeup back. But I’ve always been a little confused about how to properly clean my brushes (& for some reason I never found time to do my research – but of course there is always a right time to read your brilliant blog) so thanks for the enlightenment!
