Collaborations: just about everyone is doing one, or has done one…
In the past week Suno launched a collaboration with Uniqlo, APC sold out of their second sneaker collaboration with Nike and we found out Phillip Lim is gearing up for a fall collaboration with Target. For me, I still get excited about these collaborations. Especially those that bring high end designers to a mass market– I slept on the street in Soho for Lanvin x H&M (it was freezing, a little scary, but totally worth it). But with so many of them popping up, is some of the magic lost?
We wanted to know, are you still excited to shop a collaboration? Do you have a dream collaboration?
Je serais de cet avis, c’est sûr qu’il y en a qui arrive à mieux vendre leur collaborations avec des coûts publicitaires très important comme HM, mais pour les autres il faut vraiment s’y connaitre pour être au courant.
Personnellement je trouve pas que ce soit toujours bon, mais la meilleure collaboration que j’ai pu voir était celle de Versace pour HM.

Yes and no. I always get excited about the collaborations done with Target. But with clothing, the fit and the fabric are usually not quite where it should be. However, I bought items from the collaboration with Tory Burch and Missoni and I love them. But the items were a lunchbox and a beach towel so no fit required and they’re great.
I personally think that it is a great innovation in the fashion market since the first it was done. But i can’t really say. I don’t know whether the magic is lost or not as i have never bought any items from any collaboration (not that easy to find in Jakarta). Mais, whether the magic is lost or not, i still think that it is a great idea that keeps the fashion exciting.

Its nice to hear that I am not the only crazy one. who sleeps on the streets for H&M collaboration. I live in San Francisco and we get November rain around that time. I wanted to add that H&M increased prices drastically with Margiela collaboration and a lot of items were left on the shelf. This defeats the purpose of purchasing big designer clothes at reasonable price. On the other hand, I wish that Target would raise the price a little and improve the quality a lot. That being said, I do have precious items from both H&M and Target collaborations.

J’aime bien les collaborations. Qd les deux univers ont bcp de succès c’est tjs palpitant de voir quelle couleur, forme va prendre l’étincelle. Et si c’est la collaboration d’une gde marque avec des créateurs moins connus, c’est une tjs de fraîcheur, un moment créatif bienvenu, voire une révélation! Par exemple, je pense aux collaborations sollicitées par Claudie Pierlot pour ces 30 ans: elles m’ont alléchées!! Chacune d’entre elles étaient une petit bonbon fashion!

I’ve never bought any collaboration pieces myself, since they’re hard to find where I live. I did happen to be near H&M when their Versace collaboration came out, but I must admit I was not a fan.
I would love to see a Celine or Balmain collaboration, but I’m not sure H&M would do them justice, mainly when it comes to the cuts and fabrics. But then again, who else do we have here in Europe?

I am also so pumped about the Phillip Lim one as I love his stuff but cannot afford any of it. But for the Maison Margiela with H&M I wasn’t into it.

Ici, a Rio, on vois partout de collaboration aussi. Il y a de super et de triste. J’ai toujours la curiosité de y allé voir de prêt le résultat. a mon avis Stella Mccartney pour C&A c’était superbe, mas c’était une de le premier de une long série de collaboration de réalisation irrégulier. Le plus déçu est pas reconnaitre l’âme du créateur mais, oui de la magasin.

I agree that some of the magic is lost…but there are a few collaborations I would still get excited about if they were ever to occur. Of course, the quality has to be there and it so often it is not there with the high/low collaborations. I think the low quality has also killed the excitement.
I never get any cool stuff unless I sleep on the streets- so instead of getting excited, I experience FOMO.

Et ai craqué pour une veste de margiela toujours pour h&m
Donc oui pour les collaborations qui nous permettent de craquer pour des pièces imaginées par des créateurs dont je ne pourrais pas vraiment m’offrir les vêtements….
On finit par être blasés et les marques finissent pas perdre leur originalité en achetant celle des autres.

Les plus marquantes pour moi sont celles d’H&M. J’ai une robe sublime Lanvin x H&M et 2 super soutifs Sonial Rykiel x H&M. J’aurais adoré pouvoir aller à la collab avec Marni et aussi m’y prendre plus tôt pour un maillot Roxy x Diane Von Furstenberg.Une que j’aimerais bien c’est une collab Marc Jacobs x H&M.
like collaborations when the designer feel comes through – and there’s still some element of quality and that “special something”. Missoni is absolutely the best I’ve seen. Could dream of Hermes and Crate and Barrell/Pottery Barn. Could dream of unique combination: perhaps apple and F21 or John Deere and Abercrombie – 2 unlikely things being good together in an unforseen way. Would like to see what sort of collaboration Nordstrom might initiate vs. sooo downscale retail.
Oh yes… still very excited about collaborations if for nothing else than the fact that many of us will perhaps never have the opportunity to afford such high end designers as Phillip Lim or Lanvin at their regular (or even greatly discounted) price point and mass market collaborations are our only option to share in their brand and aesthetic. Keep ’em coming, I say!
The thing is, that magic never really reaches our shores so it’s safe to say we never experienced it anyway. This is though, a great opportunity for these brands, it means that there is still a largely untapped market or markets.
I hate collaborations, and I don’t care that most of the brands would otherwise be inaccessible to me. High fashion should be beautiful and well-made – period. Collaborations are neither.

I love collaborations… but only with H&M. I dream TOM FORD +H&M. That will be good. I have a lot of thinks from H&M collection in past. I both a lot of from Maison MM for HM and off course Lanvin, Versace, Marni….I love that … But TOM FORD can be very interesting ….
J’ai adoré Marni & h&m et Carven pour Petit bateau. Ah et aussi American retro pour Monoprix.
C’est vrai que c’était cool cette collab H&M Lanvin, j’y avais trouvé 2 robes – 1 portée 2 fois et l’autre JAMAIS ( bon, je l’ai prêté à une copine l’autre jour- c’est déjà ça). En fait ça dépend vraiment des collabs, elles ne sont pas toujours au niveau…parce que ce qui fait la magie d’une marque, ce n’est pas seulement le design mais surtout les tissus et les détails raffinés, il est donc très difficile de retrouver un produit d’aussi belle qualité !

I wasn’t too sure about Lanvin. What pieces did you buy, Alex? I tried on those yellow and pink dresses and I felt like a cupcake. Not what I’m usually going for. :) I did love the H&M × Comme des Garçons collaboration, though!

Les collaborations, c’est chouette quand le style de l’objet de collation tient du génie.
Parfait contre-exemple : Sienna Miller a fait une collection pour Caroll, c’est chiantissime, plus bourge tu meurs. Idem, tu as vu cette collab Coach x St James ? Le résultat est trop classique pour être intéressant!
Mais l’imprimé de Garance, il serait en ventre au mètre, j’en achèterais volontiers ! ;-)

I think as long as there is an air of exclusiveness to collaborations they will always be popular. I was highly anticipating the spring Nike x APC collaboration and it went by in a flash. Now I’m gearing up for a fall collab…. I can’t wait!
C’est sûr que si on y passe, une petite robe noir Chanel à pas cher, je suis preneuse….
La collab de cet hiver Courrèges x La Redoute, j’étais euphorique, surtout que les pièces maitresses seront à petit prix, le délire quoi… Je vais enfin pouvoir la porter cette robe blanche Courrèges – trop top quoi.
Moi j’adore les collab des marques avec une personne… déjà d’un point de vu comm’ c’est juste très bien senti… Non c’est vrai Alexa Chung chez Maje tout le monde mate un peu, Kate B. chez TopShop… même Jeanne Damas chez Nathalie Dumeix, ça m’a fait foncer.
Donc pareil : j’adore les collab et non jamais trop pourvu que ce soit inédit. Quand on aime les deux choses c’est l’apothéose en quelques sortes… je suis pour pour pour!
Je veux ma collab Garance Doré et Equipment pr la plus belle chemise de la Terre entière, et de l’Univers évidemment-
I seriously can’t wait for Philip Lim x Target. The most successful collaborations are the ones that are affordable. I’m not going to guy a collaboration piece at $200 or $300 when I can get the designer piece for a little bit more.
Oh Lanvin et H&M, souvenirs, j’ai attendu à partir de 5h du matin devant la boutique, c’était une vraie expérience, mais plus jamais! Une collection capsule H&M avec Jil Sander, le rêve.

Moi j’aimerais beaucoup une collaboration Garance Doré et John Galliano. Après son procès, son méa culpa, sa traversée du désert, la rédemption. C’est très américain en plus et Garance avec son pep’s, sa sympathie débordante pourrait aider John Galliano à renaître de ses cendres, n’oublions pas qu’il a beaucoup apporté et que ce n’est qu’un être humain, avec son talent et surtout ses failles.
Vive les collaborations! C’est frais, c’est différent, ca donne envie – bref, on se lasse pas! :)

Ulyana & HM. It would be a dream to wear Ulyana Sergenko. Not necessarily the dresses like they wore in Cannes. Cant imgine me pulling out this Beyonce(confidencewise) thing in Paris, but my liitle Carrie Bradshaw(sorry watching SATC when Carrie is in Paris atm) could wear this puffy skirts and get lost in the fairytale collection of Ulyana.

Mais les collaborations avec Target sont nulles pas seulement pour la qualité mais pour l’organisation de l’arrivée des vêtements en magasin: nul. Les meilleures sont encore H&M.

Collaborations always excites me, especially with H&M and Uniqlo. The recently shopping I did was LADUREE x Uniqlo (an very interesting one). The idea of low price but great design are the main attraction. My favourite H&M one was with Marni.

Il y a de ça super longtemps, genre 20 ans, Vanessa Bruno a collaboré avec Carrefour pour quelques vêtements.J’avais acheté un pull col bateau noir en coton et un pantalon kaki que j’ai adoré…A l’époque, j’étais un peu nounouille et je pensais que c’était acté pour plusieurs années…Tu parles!…Si j’avais su, j’aurais acheté 3 pulls…3 pantalons, enfin toute la collec en 3 exemplaires, tellement je les ai aimé ces fringues.
Moi je dis OUI OUI OUI…mais c’est vrai que ça devient un peu trop “événementiel” ces collaborations…
I think that collaborations should permit to people who can’t afford luxury brands to buy something designed by those brands. That’s why I thought that HM collaborations were a great idea. I thought! Because, at the end of the day, I think that it’s just another way to gain money. I never found anything at HM, because after few hours the most beautiful items are sold out, and the ugly ones… who cares if there’s written Martin Margiela or Marni?
Also, some collaborations are available only in very few selected stores, so it’s quite unfair.
But, If I had to dream about a collaboration, I would say John Galliano for HM.

That’s a good point. Last year, to be more specific in July, I started organising my conclusion project for University thinking about this subject. My question was: what’s the power of collaborations in the influence of both brands involved? So, this year, I developed my research! Seriously, i found some really interesting answers. I think when Lagerfeld started it was different, it was kind of magic, but it was almost 10 years from now. Nowadays, brands have to be careful, otherwise they can have their image damaged, not because of the mixture of brand equities, but most important: because it’s not innovative anymore.
