Jean Dream
9 years ago by
Don’t call it a comeback!
Because we all saw them coming…
The ankle-length, high waist skinny, the boyfriend perfectly-worn-in-and-loose-like-a-guy’s, and the crop flare.
To be honest, I don’t think any of these styles have ever been particularly easy to pull off – now, or when they first arrived on racks. But, as a connoisseur of denim, blue jeans specifically, there is no shape I won’t try.
The Crop Flare
Now, I found a pretty incredible pair last year when I was Upstate. Arguably too flared for most and vintage, of course, but I love them. And, when I saw the AC x AG pair, it felt like there was a solution for everyone. Here’s why: they are really more of a kick-flare if you will…. kind of like you had a pair of boot-cut jeans and cut them.
I’m not suggesting we all copy Drake’s look exactly, because how weird would it be if we were all walking around with striped stops and white fluffy dogs, like an episode from the Twilight Zone…. BUT…. maybe?!
The High Skinny
I was wary of a jean that was both skinny and stopped just above my ankle… Impossibly unflattering. Yet, the pair Tijana wears from Saint Laurent are (as many a fashion girl will attest to) the dream jean. High waisted and fitted so well I’d suggest a bed to lay on or a friend nearby to help get the zipper up.
I like this particular style for biking because, despite all my best efforts, a pant that sits at your natural waist is the only way to effortlessly glide across town without the fear of butt cleavage for all those behind you. They also make your behind look great – high and tight like you had been working to achieve said behind.
The Boyfriend
The shape we’ve come to call “boyfriend fit” – yet can’t seem to find an alternative to… (Relaxed?) I mean, what if I don’t have a boyfriend, whose jeans am I wearing then?! They were everywhere five years ago and, like most things, seem to be making their low-slung and washed-in way back into closets.
Best worn with heels – that’s the solution for keeping them feminine. Seriously, throw on your boyfriend’s old t-shirt too. Hell, spritz some of his cologne while you’re at it…. just don’t forget those painfully-delightful-height-extending-hard-to-walk-in heels. Just don’t expect to get a boyfriend while you wear them.
What we shouldn’t forget, though, is that you can always go back to your tried and true favorite, whatever it may be, even the dreaded 80s mom-jean…. because you know it will be back. Some way, some how – see you then!
On Drake / Top, Sonia Rykiel; Jeans, AC x AG; Shoes, Repetto; Bag, Céline; Sunglasses, Supreme. On Tijana / Top, Mother of Pearl; Jeans, Saint Laurent; Shoes, Gucci; Bag, Myriam Schaefer. On Thembi / Top, Saint Laurent; Jeans, B Sides; Shoes, Charlotte Olympia; Bag, Saint Laurent.
These jeans are perfection! I love all of them, but the first model combined with the blocky heels flats is gorgeous!

Coucou,

Brie, you are speaking my language. I love high waist skinny crop jeans and high waist skinny crop kick flare jeans. Biggest problem: finding said jeans with a true high waist (10-11 inch rise) and a good wash. BTW, those AC x AG jeans are TO DIE FOR.
Theresa! They are perfect right? Get them now before its too late!! :)
Love this. Beautiful styling! I especially love this first pair. Also, the mom jean has already made its come-back in London – check out Topshop’s ‘Mom’ jean for proof! xx
Thanks Lydia! I knew it, we can’t escape the “mom” jean no matter the continent. Just avoid eye contact with them if possible! x
I adore this and I welcome this change very warmly – a low rise is hard for a 23 year old who doesn’t go to the gym! I’m hoping they go away for a while, since they’ve been around since I was young – I’m loving the relaxed, more natural and body healthy feel.
Warm Regards,
Alexandra

The first look – very Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy! I love it! Frankly speaking, all three looks are great. I loooooove jeans!
The girls look cool in jeans with a high waist and straight leg, the male gaze.
What a pleasure to look at the stylish women.

A friend just recommended that I check out your blog and, of course, I’m hooked! I work in NYC, and just lost my head and moved to NJ a few months ago…not so much fun… My mother was French, went to FIT, and was a buyer of women’s better suits and coats.
I will be returning to Maui for a another professional writers conference next month, and already have all the
“beachwear” I’ll need. However, I really need clothes to wear in the air conditioned conference rooms: last fall, the rooms were chilly! Capris? Coral or olive? Tiny sweaters? Or tiny hoodies? Would also do vintage hippy…ish. (Do you know of shops dans La Cité?) Merci!

Great post about jeans! I’m trying to find new different brands to carry… Anything you can recommend? I already carry frame denim..

All those jeans only look good if you are very thin I think.
The jeans with those black repettos is my fave look!

?? This post I am a jean girl all day everyday. Never stopped wearing Flares… No matter the shape jeans are never out of style and everyone can wear them
Dreaming of jeans with a 10 or 11 inch rise…..don’t even really care what shape. Just so tired of 2 inch zippers which expose everything and constantly slide down your hips.
This photoshoot is simply amazing!

The first look is amazing. I love high waisted jeans, check it out

I think these photos are so wonderful… Especially the one on the right! The combination of the worn jeans folded up at the hem, and those pink Charlotte Olympia shoes… I mean… Such great styling and worthy of hanging on the wall for inspiration. Such nice work indeed!
Love the 1st picture, casual look but with big earrings = I love her look :)

Discovering high waisted skinny jeans changed my life! I’ve always worried about, well, showing my underwear with low waisted jeans. Not very chic. But high waist is just the most comfortable thing in the world! You can move and o whatever you want!
Boy friend jeans, however, are my fave. I love casual and comfy so I always have a pair (or two, ot three) in my wardrobe!

E.

I’m having trouble hanging up the skinnies, but this styling is convincing me!

Hi who makes the earrings on the woman in the first photo!
Absolutely looking for the perfect BF fit!
These jeans are great. Love the alternative to skinnies.

Would love to say goodbye to the skinny jeans forever. I wore all my boyfriend’s clothes in college…..they looked great (especially belted) and I could hide my stomach after a night of over-indulging!

love the dog! I think its a nice combination between a boyfriend jean and a shirt
Bise :)
