Veronica’s Jams

When I was 13 my mom married my stepdad, causing us to move into a new house with a whole new set of oddities. One night I was staying up past my bedtime causing raucous while the house was quite. Well, as much raucous as a 13 year old can cause which meant rummaging through my newly acquired stepdad’s music collection. It was there I stumbled upon Rolling Stones Forty Licks. Drawn in by the graphic, colorful tongue I inserted the CD into my disc-man and pushed played. I can only describe the next hour as euphoria as I lay on the floor experiencing The Stones for the first time. Elation, joy, sex and pain. The Stones led me to the blues and the harmonica, and my music preference continues to be something I can simultaneously throw back a whiskey, shed a tear and stomp my feet to. I still say that moment of hearing of The Stones changed the direction of my life. I found empathy and a place of self expression when I needed it most. You now all know more about me than most people will in a lifetime. But that’s the beauty and the pain of the Internet, no? And perhaps, the blues.
