Tornado

Tokujin Yoshioka sure knows how to bend a straw…
He’s also taking our breath away with his solo exhibition, currently on at the Saga Prefectural Art Museum. The piece, Tornado, guides audiences through several gallery rooms filled with two million (yes, million!) translucent straws, making viewers feel like they’re trapped in the center of a windstorm. (Kind of like a high culture rendition of the movie Twister.)
Tornado feels weightless and ethereal, a storm like no other.
We love that installation art is becoming more and more popular.
What do you think of it? Do you prefer it to more traditional mediums like paintings and sculpture?
I think it’s really interesting and visiting place like that is a unique experience. The only problem of the installation art, in my opinion, is that it takes lots of space…
I invite you to check out my blog and if you want to to follow it :)

I like many forms of art — visual art, sculpture, music, storytelling and so on.
I have enjoyed installation art as well, although I tend to prefer installation art in places where it is integrated with living spaces or outdoors. It takes a lot of space and to me feels elitest and contrived when inside a gallery or museum.
Amazing work. Sublime and simple and yet so strong.
I’d love to see this in person, I’m sure it’s quite an experience. I like that installation art is becoming more accessible, I’ll be happy when you don’t have to go to only super huge/popular museums for these experiences though. Makes a girl in a small town jealous.

Wauw, this looks amazing!
This is so beautiful and at first glance it looks as though it’s outside. How creative to use straws to create such beauty. Art can be expressed in many forms whether it’s installations or oil paintings…all good to me :)
