I have a habit of wandering through McNally Jackson (an independent bookstore in downtown Manhattan) whenever I have time to kill. It’s right by the studio and it happens to be one of my favorite spots in the city. It’s calming, the scent of new books is infectious, it’s always full of attractive-literary-types, and they have the best mix of popular new releases, unique non-fiction finds, and under-the-radar print publications.
No, this is not an advertisement for McNally Jackson. It’s me setting up the scene for where I happened upon my new favorite magazine, RAQUET.
RAQUET is a quarterly publication all about tennis (they’re currently on their tenth issue). But, it’s not a tennis-news situation, it’s an all out artistic force, celebrating the culture, aesthetic, lifestyle, and sportsmanship of the game through beautiful photography and thoughtful writing. I mean, the visuals are truly breathtaking.
Their aim is to reach tennis fanatics and newbies alike by highlighting, “the swashbuckling sport of the tennis boom of the 1970s and ’80s,” and working to “restore some of that swagger to today’s game.”
It’s well worth springing the $15 for the distinct joy of holding something this delicious in your hands. And, what could get more “Slow Living” than taking an afternoon to sit with a print magazine?
