Pocket PMF: Breaking up with Friends
6 years ago by
It’s a tough thing to do, but sometimes it’s the only option; breaking up with friends. Today Garance is in NYC chatting with Emily, Veronica and Caitlin about ending toxic friendships. They talk about the regrets, the sadness that comes with it, and learning to recognize and do what’s best for you.

This is such a great topic! I recently ended a 40-year friendship with someone I met in college. It was difficult, but in the end I realized that a friendship based on a sense of guilt and obligation isn’t much of a friendship. It took me years, though, to get up the nerve. Here’s a post I wrote on this topic five years ago: https://dailyplateofcrazy.com/2013/10/30/how-do-you-know-when-its-time-to-let-go-of-friendship/
This spring, when she tried to guilt-trip me during a call on my birthday (that I only answered out of guilt, by the way,) I knew it was time to let go. So I wrote her a letter explaining what I’d been feeling. I felt that I owed her that, and I tried to suggest that perhaps she was feeling some of the same things. I have no idea how she reacted, but even though I had some fleeting regret — I did love her at one time — I mostly feel relief. I haven’t had a chance to listen to the full podcast so apologies if you’ve covered this. But what do you do with the social media connections when you break up with a friend. We are connected on Instagram and neither one of us has unfollowed the other. Not yet.
great pocket pmf! we all have this stories and some are painful, so this kind of conversation really helps. thank you!
Les amitiés sont comme les vêtements. Certaines resteront des intemporelles et le lien se renforce de saison en saison. D’autres ne nous vont qu’un temps mais il ne faut pas, je crois, renier ce qu’elles ont apporté au départ.
How are you suppose to react when you find out that one of your best friends (girl) is meeting up secretly with your ex ( and she met her thru me and … i Swear, they couldn’t fuc*in’stand each other!!! ) that really fuc*ed your self esteem and made you feel like the water inside the sausage jar ,gossiping and talking mad sh*t about you ?
What a Bullsh*t Cu*t moove, right?
the subject is good and interesting but the sound of someone eating and speaking at the same time is not nice…
I really love that gasping at the wedding story. But SUCH an interesting and necessary podcast.

It would be cool if you could also do a pmf on breaking up with romantic partners. I know it’s an obvious topic but I’d love to hear your stories.
