As a Latina woman born and raised in NYC, it is no surprise that I would be drawn to an Instagram account that celebrates the Latinx experience in the concrete-jungle…where dreams are made of…there’s nothing you can’t do…in NEW YORKKK!
The stories of resilience featured on @nuevayorkinos warm my heart (and my Instagram Feed). As a daughter of immigrants from the Dominican Republic, these stories of Latino parents–picking up their entire lives to make their way to the city of dreams in order to create a better life for themselves and their families–hit close to home. Also, as an honorary member of the Nostalgic Generation, there’s something so joyous and moving about looking at photos from decades’ past, although not having lived through it. I’ve always loved looking through my family’s photo albums and seeing old pictures of my parents: as newlyweds, new parents, and new Americans. Knowing the stories behind these printed images make the photos that much more beautiful, that much more alive, and that much more real—they also make you that much more appreciative of the generations that came before you.
Check out @nuevayorkinos on Instagram to learn about, and immerse yourself in, the powerful, heartwarming stories of the resilience of hundreds of Nueva Yorkinos—the ones who brought bachata, cumbia, and samba to the states, installed your favorite Latino restaurants, and gave Spanish Harlem its name.
