Nothing But Net

The fishnet stocking reminds me mostly of my days in dance recitals….
And then of pin-up girls, a vast contradiction to say the least — and to think I might wear them casually again in everyday wear. Beautifully holed and almost artfully disfigured, I think I love fishnets once more.
In Paris, I wore them with a slip and loafers to feel less conservative and then (inspired by a friend who I ran into), even wore them under some jeans, so just the ankle bit was visible. Reminiscent of their origins actually, when they came to America in 1908 from Paris (of course) where they were mostly worn on can-can dancers in the Moulin Rouge. But even today, they are serving the same purpose: show some leg, but leave much to be desired.
My favorite pair is from Wolford, the diamond shape of the net is small and the fabrication is extra soft. And the best part about fishnets is if, or when, they get damaged, you can go old school and stitch them back together or go full on punk circa 90s Meisel. Up to you…. I might take the latter, what about you?
I have always felt weird about fishnets. For more practical purposes i don’t think it blocks the cold. But then it does remain a classic!
