Let's Talk About

How We See

How We See

It’s the doll effect.

Laurie Simmons, artist (and mom to Lena Dunham), has a new exhibition starting in New York – and it’s all about reimagining the way we see. She photographed fashion models, including Ajak Deng, with hyper realistic painted eyes. The eyes are there but closed, almost like dolls.

It’s a play on the discrepancy between who we are and how we allow people to see us, which we all kind of know to be true (no matter how much we fight it!)…

Simmons has us thinking about how social media might be making this gap even bigger. Do you think it’s making it even worse?

Laurie Simmons, How We See, at the Jewish Museum in New York from March 13 through August 9, 2015.

  • L’effet produit est vraiment extraordinaire, et les photos sont super bien prises. C’est intéressant de déboucher sur une réflexion sur la personnalité, l’image de soi (erronée ou pas) et celle qu’on veut donner aux autres.

  • This looks like a very interesting exhibit and certainly a topic I think about all the time as a person who decided to put themselves out into the world as a blogger. Sometimes, I think it can be useful to think positively about the discrepancy. By that I mean that social media can allow you to experiment with different selves and alter egos. I can be someone in social media that may be different from the someone I am in my every day life. It is interesting as a blogger to look at comments and see how others perceive you and just how close to far away they are from seeing the essence of who you are. We all come from different positions in life that effect our perceptions and make us develop schemas about how things and people should be. Social media when facilitated well can encourage thoughtful discussions about what you see.

  • Ah yes I just saw this exhibit yesterday, along with the Helena Rubinstein exhibit (also incredible, phenomenal !!!) . Laurie Simmons’s “How we See” is pretty poignant to the growing gap in social media. The sliver of our lives we share and they way in which we filter and precisely time its release to the world. I mean this conversation has been brought up several times on this blog by Garance… ensuring we dont allow ourselves to be consumed by the movable beast of social media…
