Bembien x Mirella

I love a good basket bag. Chic, effortless, stylish but not too stuffy, I carry mine all year round (the image of Jane Birkin in an oversized fur and basket will forever be burned in my brain). So when Bembien founder, Yi-Mei Truxes, launched a collection of woven bags, you know I jumped right on it. Bembien promotes consuming with a conscience. The bags are handmade by local artisans from Bali to Morocco, and 10% of their proceeds go towards Nest, a nonprofit committed to the social and economic advancement of global artisans and homeworkers.
Considering it’s equal focus on aesthetics and awareness, it only makes sense that the brand’s latest collaboration would follow suit. Mirella Cardoso, a female artist and photographer, shot a series of self-portraits with Bembien’s Stella Box bag, and the results are both thought-provoking and pleasing. As Truxes explained to me, “Cardoso’s work is all about self-discovery, and the intimacy in the process of coming to understand her subject— her own self. Her self-portraits are such a refreshing and empowering take on the art of the “selfie” in the modern era.”
